Chapter Text
[Kai]
My blood went instantly cold, replaced by a blinding, white-hot fury. I was on my feet in a second, my fists clenched so tight my knuckles turned white, ready to launch myself across the concrete like a match hitting dry tinder.
"Say that again, you arrogant prick," I snarled, letting loose a wave of sharp, acrid smoke-scent that made the jocks flinch. "I'll show you who knows their place."
"Kai, wait," a deep, rumbling voice grounded the air.
Before I could take a step forward, a heavy hand caught my shoulder—not to pull me back or control me, but to anchor me. Cole stood up beside me.
The easygoing, patient warmth I had grown to love over the past few weeks completely vanished. In its place was an absolute, terrifying tectonic shift of Alpha presence. Cole didn't yell. He didn't puff out his chest or bare his teeth like a common thug. Instead, he just stepped smoothly in front of me, releasing a massive, suffocating wave of dark espresso, crushed pine, and pure, unadulterated warning pheromones.
The temperature in the garage seemed to drop ten degrees. The smug grins melted off the jocks' faces instantly. The lead bully took an involuntary step back, his eyes widening in sheer terror as Cole’s heavy Alpha aura pressed down on them like a physical weight.
"Leave," Cole said. His voice was deathly quiet, carrying a lethal, commanding edge that made even my breath catch in my throat. "Before I forget I'm the student body president and remind you what happens when you harass my friends."
The jocks didn't need to be told twice. They scrambled back into their sports car, tires screeching against the asphalt as they tore out of the lot, vanishing into the night.
[Cole]
The dust settled, and the silence rushed back into the garage. I let out a long breath, reigning my pheromones back in, terrified I had crossed a line and scared Kai. I turned around, my heart pounding against my ribs.
"Kai, I—"
I didn't even get to finish the sentence.
Kai stormed right up to me, his amber eyes blazing, chest heaving. "What the hell was that?!" he yelled, poking a sharp finger hard against my chest. "I had them! I don't need you to fight my battles, Cole! I told you, I'm not some fragile little Omega who needs an Alpha to step in!"
"I didn't fight them because I thought you were weak," I snapped back, my own control finally fraying at the edges from the sheer stress of the night. I caught his wrist, stopping his hand against my chest, and pinned him gently—firmly—against the brick wall of the garage.
Kai gasped, his breath hitching as our eyes locked. He didn't try to pull away.
"I stepped in," I growled, my voice rough and vibrating with raw emotion, "not because you couldn't handle them, but because they dared to touch what's mine. I am so tired of watching you tear yourself apart trying to prove you're tough, Kai. Just let me have your back."
Kai’s breath caught in his throat. The fiery, defensive anger in his eyes flickered, melting away into something impossibly soft, vulnerable, and wide open. The artificial smoke scent completely vanished, replaced by the sweet, intoxicating warmth of a natural, relaxed Omega dropping every single wall he had ever built.
"You idiot," Kai whispered, a shaky, breathless laugh escaping his lips.
"Yeah," I murmured, my gaze dropping to his mouth. "Probably."
Kai didn't wait for me to overthink it. He reached up, tangling his fingers into the collar of my shirt, and pulled me down the rest of the way.
The kiss was messy, desperate, and tasted like cheap soda and burning friction—a literal wildfire meeting the earth. I groaned, my hands sliding up to cup the back of his neck as Kai pulled me closer, completely wrapping his warmth around me.
We didn't care about the school hierarchy, the judgmental stares in the hallways, or the archaic rules of the board. In the dim light of the abandoned garage, surrounded by grease and old tools, we weren't an Alpha and an Omega playing by society's rules.
We were just Kai and Cole, making our own.
