Captain was stunned by golden light shining bright in his eyes, he covered the top half of his face with one hand as he blinked his way back to consciousness. Captain looked over to his left and saw Dum was nowhere near by. Instead a small note took her place on her pillow.
‘William, I am so sorry that this is the way to tell you I had to leave this morning, but you looked too peaceful to wake up. I'm currently out with my brother running errands and getting more groceries. I've already fed Charlie so don't worry about him, I also gave him some more water so he should be okay. Thanks for reading this, I'll be back home asap – Love, Jessica <3’
As Captain read the note, his eyes kept wandering back to the word brother. He felt awful about this but he couldn't help it, something about Player kept him hooked. Maybe it was because he was Captain's closest friend, or maybe it's the way he dresses, or always puts up with him… it didn't matter whatever the case was, Captain was in love with his girlfriend's brother and that was the biggest problem.
He knew he couldn't just tell her that, if he broke her heart, no one would look at him the same, especially Player. He was playing a dangerous game every day he woke up. He shook his head and got ready, trying to push the thoughts down.
Though, when you're in love and stupid, the thoughts never really go away, it's like when you're trying to forget an embarrassing memory, and when you think you've finally done it, your brain surprises you with a ‘Hey remember when’ at 3AM…
As Captain finished getting ready, he sat down on the couch, relaxing and trying to maintain a peaceful attitude. He wanted to pay Charlie a visit, but decided to stay where he was, and instead to lie on the couch.
He didn't do much, the TV was off too, it seemed like he was watching something in his mind. Either that or talking to himself to keep him entertained. It's an old habit he gained during childhood when no other children wanted to play with him. They all thought he looked weird and had stereotypical dreams so he wasn't all that popular…
The habit stuck through teenage years and young adulthood, he thought he got rid of it, but it seemed to always linger in the back of his mind. Bringing a weird sense of comfort to him when he’d fall back into the habit.
At around 3pm, the door opened, it was Dum. She had bags in both hands and was attempting to balance other small groceries on herself.
Captain immediately shot up and grabbed things from her hand, taking them to the kitchen until she was finished with loading them inside the house.
“How was it?” Captain asked, putting away milk and other refrigerated items.
“Boring, he doesn't really do much. Aside from complaining about losing and talking about new games, he's actually surprisingly quiet now.” She replied, putting away loaves of bread.
“Major bummer… well, if you see him again any time soon. Tell him I said hello!” Captain maintained his cheerful tone, trying to ignore every thought about Player and how Dum and him are close as siblings… oh how his heart aches whenever he gets mentioned…
“Yeah, I totally will! Actually, about that, he mentioned wanting to play again, believe it or not!” Dum closed the last cupboard, turning around to face Captain. Captain did the same, facing her as he finished putting away everything that needed to be in the fridge.
“Really?” Captain had an expression mixed with confusion and excitement on his face.
“Mh‐hm! He seemed genuine about it, he also wanted me to let you know to invite the whole group, and yourself of course!” She walked away into the bedroom, letting Captain have the entirety of the house to himself.
Captain's heart was racing, he pulled out his phone and opened Discord. It's been a hot minute since I've logged on…’ he thought to himself.
Two members of the group were active, he checked and saw it was Player and Veteran, he assumed they were messing around on random games together. Seeing Player online reminded him to double check for sending out invitations.
He opened his and Player's DM's.
“Hi bestie! Dum told me today that you've been thinking of playing Among Us again, and I just wanted to double check that you are still up for it with everyone!”
It took him a while to send it, thinking about all the possible outcomes.
After around 3 minutes he got a notification.
“ ‘Player’ @user_player2210506 reacted 👍 to your message ”
He clicked on the notification before it expired, carefully reading the message Player sent.
“Hey Captain! I'm up for it for inviting everyone, I was thinking maybe tomorrow we could play? If everyone's free obvi”
Captain wasted no time and typed up a response.
“Sure! I'll get right to it! Thanks for inviting me again, I really missed playing with everyone!”
“No worries man I also kinda missed hanging around everyone, I know me and Veteran, and sometimes you, still talk but it's been a while since I've seen or heard about like Mother or even Mr. Cheese for that matter.”
Captain smiled at his phone, typing up one final message.
“So it's final, I'll send the invite soon, bestie!!!”
Captain switched tabs to the main group, sending a quick message.
“Hey guys! I know its been a while but who's up for some Among Us? Me, Player, Dum, and Vet are planning to join, so if anyone's interested let us know!” A few minutes after sending the text, more people came online, then more, and soon enough the entire group was all agreeing to play.
Captain felt his heart light up with joy as he saw everyone come together again. Something about seeing everyone catch up made him beam with joy.
He set his phone down beside him and called for Dum, she walked out of the bedroom and stood in the hall, confused about what happened.
“What do you say about some AmongUs tomorrow?” He grinned, looking up at her.
“Oh! Sure! I'd love that!” She replied, smiling as she walked over and hugged Captain, planting a small kiss on the side of his face.
His heart dropped at her mannerisms, he pushed back slightly and tried to play it off.
“Sure then, I'll mention it to the group.” He averted eye contact, and focused on picking up his phone again, trying to look busy.
“Alright! Well I'll be in the bedroom if you need me!” She replied, paying not much attention to how Captain replied to her kiss.
“yup..!” He called out, trying to still be friendly to her.
He wasn't sure how to break up with her, he didn't want to be on the bad side of the Schmidts… but he couldn't stay, no, when you fall out of love you should never lead your partner on, it would make the break up even worse. He had to act fast. He thought to plan a dinner ‘date’ or maybe give her a gift and ask to still stay friends… yeah! That could work!
Captain slightly smiled at the idea to let her down softly, he still cared for her and wanted to be friends, just, not partners. He hoped she would at least still want to stay close if he acted on this…
