Chapter Text

Yoongi gave Jimin a sip of his coffee, the boy’s eyes brightening when he saw it. He still looked exhausted, but there weren’t tears falling from his eyes, so Yoongi considered that progress.

“Tell me about yourself, Jimin.”

Jimin frowned at the question, looking unsure. “Like what?”

Yoongi shrugged. “Are you in school?” He started off with simple questions, being the boy didn’t seem so anxious to talk about what happened.

“...I just transferred as a freshmen. I shouldn’t be starting until the end of the semester but… ah…” Jimin trailed off, looking uncomfortable. Yoongi resisted the urge to bring him into his arms.

“It’s alright. I’m a junior. What’re you interested in?”

Jimin perked up cutely at this. “Dance. What about you, Yoongi-hyung?”

Yoongi couldn’t help the smile that curled onto his lips as he heard his name in Jimin’s voice. It sounded melodic to him.

“I’m majoring in music, so me and my friend like to write lyrics.”

At this, Jimin’s eyes widened. “The song you played for me! I knew it wasn’t a published song!”

Yoongi frowned, because how could Jimin tell the difference between the songs he’d played? “Which one?”

At his confused look, Jimin smiled slightly and began to sing a familiar song in his beautiful voice. It had been the first song Yoongi played for him.

“Jiminie,” Yoongi murmured in awe, the nickname just slipping out, “you have such an angelic voice. I might need to get Namjoon to re-record that song just to get you in it.”

The younger of the two ducked his head, a rosy blush coloring his cheeks at the compliment. “You don’t think it’s feminine?”

Yoongi’s lips twisted in disgust at the thought. “Why would I ever think that? You’re the one who’s been putting me to sleep through all these nights, Jiminie.”

The conversation suddenly seemed much too private for the coffee shop, which was slowly gaining more visitors as the sun rose. Yoongi checked the time, letting out a curse. “I have class soon. Do you want me to walk you back to your dorm? Or wherever you’re staying?”

Jimin hesitated, appearing as if he was having an internal struggle with himself. After a second, he spoke up. “I don’t exactly… have a place to stay.” He fiddled nervously with his sweaters’ sleeves, as if worried about Yoongi’s reaction.

The music major raised an eyebrow but didn’t prod. “Stay at my house.” He internally winced at how demanding it sounded, but he didn’t want Jimin out alone, especially knowing the boy had probably gotten about as much sleep as Yoongi had.

“I don’t want to intrude,” Jimin began, but Yoongi cut him off.

“I don’t want to argue, so just come with me. Didn’t you say you had no place to stay?” Yoongi turned a piercing stare on the younger male, who reluctantly nodded.

“Should I skip class and stay with you?” Yoongi offered, but Jimin instantly shook his head.

“I’m not a child, and besides, I was only going to sleep,” he murmured.

Yoongi didn’t protest. “If you need anything, just call out to me in your mind.” A pleasant feeling took over him as he said this, remembering that since they’d now met they’d be able to communicate in their minds.

Jimin noticeably brightened when Yoongi said this, as if he’d forgotten as well. “Of course!” Conversation came easy on the walk back.

-

Yoongi fidgeted through all of class, especially after Hoseok dragged the entire story out of him. His roommate seemed just as anxious to see Yoongi’s soulmate, running through the door ahead of Yoongi.

They found Jimin on the couch, wide-eyed and buried under a blanket as he stared at Hoseok.

“Jimin!” Hoseok squealed, rushing over to give the blond-haired boy a hug. Jimin’s shock wore off and he grinned, returning the hug as the blanket slipped off his shoulders.

“Are you Yoongi-hyung’s roommate?”

Hoseok sent him his signature heart smile. “Yeah! I’m Jung Hoseok, thanks for making Yoongi over there less grumpy in the morning with your singing!”

Jimin’s grin widened at this, but before he could respond, Yoongi interrupted. “Hoseok, get away from my soulmate, right now .”

Hoseok let go of Jimin, bright smile on his face. “Sorry Yoongi, I forgot how easily you get jealous- ow!” he exclaimed when the oldest slapped his arm harshly.

Jimin laughed, a sound that had Yoongi’s heart fluttering. God, if Taehyung knew about this, he’d be teasing him endlessly.

Yoongi sat on the couch next to Jimin, who hesitantly leaned against his side. Not willing to dissuade the younger, Yoongi wrapped a secure arm around him and pulled him closer, glaring at the knowing grin Hoseok sent him as he grabbed stuff for class.

“I’d stay, but I have to go across campus for my next class. It was nice meeting you, Jimin!” Hoseok exclaimed, waving.

Jimin waved back just as cheerfully. “It was nice meeting you too!”

“Finally,” Yoongi grumbled the instant the door shut behind him, “I swear that boy has so much energy.”

Jimin giggled a bit, before curling a bit closer to Yoongi, nearly on his lap. He seemed to be one for skinship, so Yoongi pulled him all the way, burying his face in Jimin’s soft hair. For a minute, they sat in silence, Jimin seeming lost in thought.

“Jimin… “ Yoongi began hesitantly, knowing this was a sensitive topic, but curiosity getting the better of him. Yoongi wasn't really known to sugarcoat things. “What exactly happened last night?”

Jimin took a deep breath. “I figured you’d ask soon enough.” He moved off Yoongi’s lap and turned sideways, so his legs were still draped across Yoongi’s lap. Yoongi tried to hide his disappointment at losing the comforting feeling, but at least Jimin hadn't fully shattered contact.

“I was going to move here right before the semester, as you know. But last night… last night my dad found out I had a soulmate. He exploded. He already hated me for being born and having a voice nearly as pretty as my mom’s, but the fact that I had a soulmate was too much for him.” Jimin took another shuddering deep breath.

Yoongi shot him a confused look, sympathy piling in his heart, but confusion swirling in the turmoil as well. He started absentmindedly rubbing a soothing hand down Jimin’s legs as he asked his next question, hoping this wasn’t too much for Jimin. “Why was having a soulmate so bad?”

Jimin gave a sad smile. “I… wasn't born from a soulmated couple. My dad has still to this day never found his soulmate. The exact day after my mother had me, she found her soulmate. She never told my dad she’d ever heard anything from her soulmate, yet she gave him me and just left, tossing the news into his face like it was supposed to happen all along. So I can’t really blame him for doing what he did…”

“It doesn’t make it right,” Yoongi hissed, catching onto where this story was going. “He kicked you out, didn’t he?”

Jimin nodded in affirmation, not meeting Yoongi’s gaze anymore. “He screamed about how it wasn’t fair and I didn’t deserve to be alive. That I should just leave. So I did. I already knew Taehyung- we’re supposed to be roommates. He greeted me when I arrived in tears and had me talk it out at the coffee shop. Then- well, you know the rest.”

Yoongi gritted his teeth. “Your father is a piece of shit.”

Jimin sighed. “I know.“ The two lapsed into a deep silence, both lost in their thoughts. Then, Jimin spoke up again. “I love your mint hair.”

Yoongi blinked, looking surprised. “Thank you.”

“I want to dye my hair. My father never let me.”

Yoongi felt a ribbon of disgust twist in his gut. “You can stay here until the semester ends, Jimin-ah. I’ll look after you. We can go get your hair dyed and you can meet my friends.”

Jimin refused to look up at Yoongi still, but Yoongi saw the grateful smile crawl onto his lips. “I'll think about it."

-

But there really wasn't much to think about. Yoongi got Jimin to agree that night, with a little persuading from Taehyung over the phone.

“I can sleep on the couch,” Jimin offered as the evening grew later.

Hoseok frowned instantly. “That wouldn’t be right; you’re our guest!”

“It’s fine,” Jimin insisted, looking determined, “I’m the one who’s imposing on you guys anyway.”

“We want you here, Jimin!” Hoseok argued, “You warm Yoongi’s cold heart, and trust me, you aren’t imposing at all.”

“Stop arguing,” Yoongi grumbled behind a cup of tea. “Jiminie can sleep with me.”

Jimin promptly choked on his tea, and Hoseok grinned. “See? My point has been proven.”

“Yoongi-”

“Don’t argue, Jimin-ah.” Yoongi put his cup down. “I said that already. Anyways, I think I’m going to head to bed early. Join me when you’re ready.”

-

As he finished his nighttime routine, Yoongi pulled the covers over himself and pulled out his phone. He wouldn’t admit it to Hoseok, but of course he was going to wait for Jimin to join him.

He didn’t have to wait for long- mere minutes later, the blond-haired boy crawled into the small bed with him, albeit hesitantly.

“Yoongi-hyung, I thought you were going to sleep?” Jimin murmured moving closer instinctively then scooting away, as if worried Yoongi wouldn’t like the touch.

It’s okay, Jiminie, Yoongi whispered softly in his mind, the slight shiver that went down his soulmate’s spine from their sudden connection not going unnoticed. Jimin curled against his side after that, and Yoongi shifted a bit to wrap an arm around him, glad his soulmate was back to cuddling against him. He turned his phone off and put it to the side while he was at it, plunging the room back into darkness.

“Yoongi… “ Jimin whispered, voice soft in the silence.

“Hmm?” the older hummed, eyes still closed, savoring the feeling of Jimin at his side. The idea he'd get to spend even more

“Do you still want me to sing for you?”

Yoongi’s eyes opened at that, a feeling of fondness spreading through his body at the question. In the hectic events during the day, he’d completely forgotten about their little tradition. “Of course, Jiminie. Falling asleep to your voice is something I will never stop being grateful for.”
