Chapter Text
Birds were chirping outside of Shinichi’s window, practically shouting at him to wake up. Shinichi would usually comply with their request, but he was tired this morning. He stayed up late last night, tying up loose ends on a case he helped Division One with. The birds were insistent, however, and Shinichi let out a groan in protest.
In response, he heard a soft giggle and a shift. Kaito had sat up, much more rested compared to his soulmate, whose face was buried in his pillow. Kaito was glad that, for once, his soulmate actually managed to change into pajamas before getting into bed. Even if those pajamas were just the pair of sweatpants Kaito had left on the bed.
Kaito sat up further, eliciting another groan from the sleepy detective. His back was exposed to the cool autumn morning, which he was sure to complain about later, but for now, Kaito would just enjoy staring at his love’s back. Shinichi’s fit figure already made him a pleasure to look at, but being able to gaze upon the symbol of their eternal love was something else. Kaito thought he would always hate that mark, nothing but a blemish that should be hidden, but now, looking at the love of his life, he wondered how he had ever let himself down that path.
Kaito traced the mark, running a finger over the wings, following how the white turned into the deep red. Shinichi let out a pleased sigh, his muscles relaxing. Kaito let out a breathy laugh, his dove was always the cutest when he woke up. Kaito spent a few minutes like that lazily tracing his soulmate’s feathers, thinking of nothing but the other, until he realized the detective had fallen asleep. His soft breathes only audible to the quiet morning.
Kaito breathed in the crisp autumn morning air, tempted to open the window, but unwilling to disturb his partner. Carefully, he maneuvered his way out of the bed, Shinichi letting out a soft noise at the loss of warmth, but Kaito made sure to tuck him in. The wood floor was harshly cold against his feet, so Kaito pulled on some socks before making his way to the kitchen.
Kaito loved getting up first in the morning. He liked to listen to the creak of the old wood beneath his feet, he liked to fill up the coffee maker and start brewing the first of many pots of the day, he liked to smell the coffee waft into the kitchen, he liked the several minutes of quiet before he heard the soft creaking of Shinichi waking up, stirred from his slumber by the promise of a hot drink. Kaito liked starting breakfast, having the food almost ready by the time Shinichi finally made his way downstairs, still rubbing sleep from his eyes.
“You couldn’t have waited another hour or two?” Shinichi grumbled at his soulmate, letting out a yawn. Kaito smiled in return.
“Another hour or two and I wouldn’t have time to have breakfast with you, besides, you’re extra cute when you're sleepy.” Shinichi was too tired to retort, resiging himself to blushing as Kaito handed him his mug, pouring himself a cup of steaming hot coffee. The detective sat down at the table as Kaito set down the food. Nothing could make his mornings better than his dearest’s cooking. He breathed in the smell of breakfast and took a drink of coffee, letting the taste cover his tongue and breathing out a sigh before he felt truly awake. He looked across the table at his love, who gazed at him with nothing but affection. He was so embarrassing sometimes.
“Hey Shinichi?” Kaito said, still looking smitten.
“Yes, love?” Shinichi replied, just as much affection in his voice.
“I love you.” Shinichi smiled.
“I love you too.” How could he not? They fought tooth and nail to be where they were today.
A quiet morning with the love of their lives was worth every moment of pain and sorrow they had to go through. After this meal, their days were sure to return to the usual chaos, but they always knew they had another morning, another quiet reprieve in their lives, to look forward too.
