Chapter Text
To say Suga was nervous was a huge understatement. It had been only a few days since his confession, and he still couldn’t quite believe Daichi actually returned his feelings. He truly was a blessed man.
But, he was the one who asked Daichi on a date and asked him out, so he had taken responsibility for planning the date. He’d even made Oikawa and Akaashi come over and help him pick his clothes, despite being perfectly able to do it himself. Neither had met Daichi yet, but both were supportive and possibly even more excited for the date than Suga himself. Not that that was a very hard feat. He was way too nervous to be excited.
He had agreed to pick Daichi up at his apartment, and when he reached out to ring the doorbell his hands were trembling. Willing himself to calm down at least a little bit, he pressed the doorbell and stepped back. This was the moment of truth. The fate of his relationship possibly depended on this date, and Suga was determined to make it the best date Daichi had ever had.
Daichi opened the door mere seconds later, and Suga had the feeling he’d been waiting. He could see Daichi was nervous as well, which helped him calm down. He wasn’t the only one in this, not the only nervous one. That was at least a good sign, right?
Not to mention, Daichi looked… very handsome. Suga couldn’t keep his eyes off him, and he knew he was staring. Still, he didn’t bother trying to hide it. Daichi knew Suga liked him, he was allowed to know how hot Suga thought he was. Right?
He was probably being a bit creepy now, he realized and coughed, tearing his eyes away from Daichi’s chest up to his face. Which also looked like it was carved by the gods. Like usual. Damn it.
“Can’t believe I get to date that,” he said (accidentally out loud). Daichi laughed, and god he sounded so good. Daichi looked good. Everything. Good. Good Daichi.
“The feeling is mutual,” Daichi replied in a soft voice, his smile possibly even sweeter, and Suga positively melted on the spot. In a (futile) effort to hide his aggressively growing blush, he turned around and started his way down the hall, back to the elevator to get to his (Akaashi’s) car. He heard Daichi laugh behind him, before a door closed and footsteps followed him.
The elevator ride was… awkward, to say the least. Suga got the feeling Daichi was looking at him, but he didn’t want to look back. He’d embarrassed himself enough already, and the date hadn’t even started. The confidence he’d had when they were still vaguely flirting through text was completely gone, and Suga wondered where it went. Couldn’t it come back, somehow? He really could use some smoothness and confidence, right now.
It was already dark when they stepped outside the building, and it took Suga a minute to find the car. When they were finally on the road, he coughed once and scraped his throat.
“Um, so,” he started, not really knowing how to properly start the conversation. He really should’ve gone on more dates, he thought to himself. So clumsy.
Luckily, Daichi saved him just before Suga could make everything even worse and Suga wondered if Daichi had more experience. Maybe he did. He said he didn’t, but that couldn’t have been the truth, right? Someone like Daichi?
“Where are you taking us?” Daichi asked, a smile evident in his voice. Suga (tried to) ignore the way his heart skipped a few beats at the sweetness of it.
“Would you accept it if I said it’s a secret?” Suga replied, trying his hardest to sound cheeky to come across as calm and collected. It didn’t really work, but at least he wasn’t trembling as badly anymore. He really didn’t want to fuck this up.
Maybe it did work a little bit, because Daichi chuckled and shook his head. “I don’t like secrets, but I feel like I couldn’t be mad at anything you did, so tell me what you want to tell.”
Suga hummed, a smile involuntarily making its way onto his face. Daichi was just so… so wonderful. Sweet, patient, kind… okay, so maybe Suga was a bit biased, but… Daichi. He was just so wonderful, and Suga once more told himself he’d gotten extremely lucky to get the opportunity to date this man.
“It’s probably gonna be a bit cold,” he then disclosed, “but don’t worry, I brought blankets. And we could stay in the car, if you’re more comfortable with that.”
“Now I’m curious,” Daichi said, “where are you taking me that it’d be too cold to get out of the car?”
“Secret,” Suga replied in a sing-song tone, and he could almost feel the warmth of the smile Daichi threw him at that on his skin.
That was the whole thing about Daichi. Yes, sure, he was… well, hot. His body was amazing and his face beautiful, but what really wouldn’t let Suga get a grip was Daichi’s warmth in every single possible aspect. His voice was warm, his actions, the things he said… hell, even when he was being mean or teasing it gave Suga a warm feeling.
He could only say he liked it a lot. He didn’t want to let go of that warmth. Daichi made him feel like no one had ever made him feel, and on one hand it was scary, but on another extremely comforting. That the things he felt for Daichi, the feelings Daichi caused in him, were authentic, and not just some simple infatuation.
Suga had been afraid of that, in the beginning. Maybe more subconsciously than he thought, now that he was reflecting on it. He had only met Daichi a few times, and he was afraid texting wouldn’t be enough to form a proper bond. He couldn’t explain why Daichi made him feel so strongly, especially in the beginning, and it made a mess out of Suga.
Remember the dog? That was only a small part of it. Daichi was everywhere. In the café, in his memories, in his phone and in his dreams. He saw things that reminded him of Daichi everywhere, and at first he’d thought he was going insane. That the other man had bewitched him, somehow, and that Suga was stuck in some non-existant enchantment that somehow still felt very much real.
Daichi was a hazard to Suga’s heart, but Suga didn’t care. Because Daichi had, when Suga’s heart had finally completely tipped off the edge, ran and caught it. Had made sure it didn’t break, and even patched up the wounds that he prevented and thus weren’t even there.
Daichi was a mystery and a miracle at the same time, and Suga couldn’t get enough of it. And that was why this date was so important to Suga. It felt like a key moment in their relationship. Daichi had been so, so good to and for him, even though their time of knowing each other was still short.
Suga hated being dependent on others, but he needed Daichi, and he couldn’t find it in himself to mind it. All because Daichi seemed to not mind it either. He caught and carried Suga, like the weight was the only thing keeping him grounded.
Suga was still a bit afraid it was just wishful thinking, but he somehow couldn’t help but get the feeling that Daichi needed Suga as much as Suga needed him.
They arrived at their destination, and Suga waited until Daichi got out of the car, taking one more deep breath before getting out himself. They hadn’t spoken during the drive, but it hadn’t felt awkward after the first short conversation. Suga liked that. Even though this was their first date, even though they were both extremely nervous, it appeared they were comfortable around each other. Even in silence.
“What place is this?” Daichi asked when Suga got out as well and locked the car. “I don’t think I’ve ever been to this part of town.”
Suga smiled. “Not many know about it, but it’s a place I used to visit a lot with friends in high school. It’s abandoned, but it should still be working. I’m not 100 percent sure, though. I haven’t been here in years either.”
Suga walked forward and pushed open the squeaky gate, and motioned for Daichi to follow him as he entered. “No one ever comes here, so they didn’t feel the need to properly lock it off,” Suga explained to a still confused-looking Daichi.
“Isn’t this technically breaking and entering?” Daichi asked, also sounding a bit nervous. Suga smiled. Sweet, sweet Daichi.
“Technically? Maybe. But like I said, when we went here during high school it was already abandoned, and we were never caught. No one ever came to look for us, nor did anyone ever check the place if anyone was there. It’s okay.”
Daichi still seemed a bit unsure, so Suga mustered up all his courage and grabbed Daichi’s hand to reassure him. It seemed to work. A cute blush spread on Daichi’s face, visible in the dark despite his tanned skin. Suga grinned. So he did have some effect on Daichi.
Intertwining their fingers, Suga pulled Daichi along behind him, going around the building and leading him up the stairs on the side.
Suga had no idea what the building was for, as he’d never went inside. The building itself was locked, and Suga wasn’t all too interested on what was inside anyway. It was probably empty, and dusty. Cold, and dark. He didn’t feel the need to see that. He would’ve enjoyed exploring it in high school, maybe, but for now he had other things in mind.
The stairs led them up to the flat roof on the building, and Suga had been there enough time of his childhood to know it was high enough to give you an amazing view over the city lights and the sky. He assumed Daichi hadn’t really paid attention to where they were going, but they’d been driving slightly uphill, out of the city, where less lights polluted the night sky than in the city center and a beautiful array of stars was almost always clearly visible.
Suga couldn’t wait for the rest of this date. He hadn’t even been pining and waiting for too long, but it felt like years. He was excited to show this beautiful and special place to someone as… well, beautiful and special as Daichi. He hoped the night would end well.
The tight grip Daichi had on Suga’s hands and the small squeezes he gave it every now and then told Suga enough.
