The machines were humming quietly in the background, producing enough noise to keep G calm, but not so much that it would drive him insane. He’d spent weeks trying to perfect that. G was trying to put up some posters on the wall, trying to cover all the endless white space that Dr.Griffin had left behind. G found that staring at the white walls for too long also drove him crazy.
G was staring at his half empty wall, wondering what to do about it, when Phil walked in
“Dan’s sleeping.”
“oh. That’s good. He needs to recover.”
“He doesn’t hate you. He’s just a little pissed.”
“I never thought he hated me.”
“G…”
“What?” said G, still looking at his wall.
“You’re doing your weird thing. Digging into your thumb with the nail of your finger. You used to do it when you were worried that you’d pissed off Lindsey, or disappointed Doc.”
“I’m fine.”
“Okay, just saying, he doesn’t hate you. Speaking of disappointing Doc, what are you doing to his lab? It looks like the room of a seventeen year old who hates his parents.”
“It’s my lab, I can do whatever I want.”
“It’s also kind of his legacy, to be preserved.”
“Fuck that.”
“Sorry?”
“I cannot look at his plain white walls, with his plain white lights. I will drive myself insane in this goddamn prison.”
“Prison? This is his life’s work.”
G paused, took a deep breath, still staring at the wall, asked-
“Why do you think he left this to me?”
“You’re his successor, the only one who could continue his work.”
“No, you know he never thought I was smart enough to do anything but test blood.”
“Then because he loved you.”
“Ha. That’s… that’s delusional, even for you.”
“G, look at me. Turn around, and look at me.”
G didn’t move.
“Did you maybe have a drink today?”
“Jesus Christ, Phil. Seriously? You’re really asking me that?”
“Or did you start taking something again? It’s okay if you did. Addiction is-…”
“Oh please stop talking. No, Phil I haven’t taken anything. Still fourteen months sober. Relax.”
“So, stop talking about Dr.Griffin like that. What is wrong with you?”
“It’s a goddamn cult.” G muttered. He slowly turned around to face Phil. He paused when he saw the expression of annoyance and anger on Phil’s face. Dr.Griffin did have a goddamn cult. Everyone worshipped him like a God. No one knew the truth, and if they heard it, they wouldn’t believe it, not even Phil. But G couldn’t stop now, he had to try to get through to Phil.
“What are you talking about G?”
“You know why Lindsey died?”
“Yeah, cause they screwed us.”
“No, Dr.Griffin wouldn’t trade Griffin Park for her. He told them to kill her, cause they weren’t getting his ‘life’s work’. He said that the Park was more important than my ‘little girlfriend’.”
Phil sank to the ground.
“No, he loved us.”
“No, he didn’t. He didn’t love any of us. He was charming, and he showed you the ‘love’ that you’d been denied, to gain your trust. You both were his science experiment, the residents were his army, and I was his butler.”
Phil stayed silent.
“After he got Lindsey killed, I couldn’t look at him, I couldn’t look at this place. So I convinced you to come with me, and we left. I wanted to save us from him. He hated me for leaving, he hated that he couldn’t make someone love him. He knew I had grown to hate him, to hate this place. So he left it to me, as a final ‘fuck you’.”
“why don’t you just leave?”
“I can’t leave you, or anyone in here. They came here seeking love, acceptance, and a community. It’s not their fault that they were denied those things. It’s not their fault they were pulled into his bullshit. They need someone.”
“This is a lot to process.”
“Yeah, we can have some coffee and talk through it?”
“No, I can’t look- I mean, I can’t be in here right now.”
“Oh! Okay.”
“Take care of yourself G.”
