Chapter 10: They Need You (Thor & Valkyrie)

Summary:

Thor still can't get over the fact that he failed, and that people everywhere are paying the price for it.

Notes:

Takes place sometime after Thor killed Thanos (no more than a month though).

(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)

Chapter Text

Shards of glass go flying as the empty bottle of beer shatters against the wall. Thor slumps against the wall of the alley he’s in and throws the hood of his sweatshirt over his head. He’s a big guy, but that doesn’t stop him from bringing his knees to his chest and curling up into the smallest ball he can.

Tears wet his shirt and he hugs himself tighter. He wishes so hard for someone to come comfort him, but he knows there is no one.

Everyone he had loved is gone.

Sure, some of the Avengers were still out there, but the last thing he wanted to do is confront them. He was the one who should’ve killed Thanos before he could do anything.

He’s the reason everyone’s dead.

“Are you going to clean that up?”

Someone’s talking to him, but he ignores them. Thor doesn’t feel like talking to anybody right now.

“Hey you,” they say again, their voice filled with obnoxiousness. Thor looks up, as it’s apparent that they don’t plan on leaving anytime soon. “Yeah you, the hobo against the wall. You gonna pick this glass up?”

Thor examines the man looking at him from outside of the alley. He realizes he’s the owner of the store he bought his beer from. He’s short (in Thor’s terms) and extremely annoying looking. He immediately knows that this probably won’t end well.

“Leave me alone,” Thor mutters, then buries his head in his arms again.

“Yeah right,” the shopkeeper retorts. “Come on buddy, clean up your mess and get out. The Avengers may have screwed up and let everyone die, but my business has never been better. And you are not going to mess that up.”

The Avengers may have screwed up and let everyone die.

Thor slowly stands up. He is easily a half foot taller than the man, and the man understands. He gulps as Thor towers over him, a look of fury on his face.

“Y-you’re-” the man stutters.

“What did you say?” he growls.

“Um…”

Thor is this close to punching the man into the street when, all of a sudden, the man drops down into a yellow circle that appeared out of nowhere.

Thor looks down, touching the ground with his hand. A memory comes to his mind, from about a year ago when he had been on earth with his brother.

“Wizard…?”

A man dressed like the last wizard smiles at him. This wizard is much shorter, though, and more plump.

“Hello Thor, I am Wong. I see you’re causing trouble again,” the wizard greets.

Thor turns around towards the alley. “Look, I’m not in the mood for jokes. If you have something to say, then say it. But I’m probably not interested.”

Thor stumbles backwards as Wong appears in front of him.

“And don’t do that,” he comments, shaking a finger in his face threateningly.

“Are you absolutely sure you’re not interested?” Wong asks, unfazed by the Asgardian’s finger.

“Yes.” Thor slumps down into his original spot against the wall.

“Really?”

“Mm-hm.”

“Alright then. The other Asgardians may be sad, but I’m sure they will understand.”

Thor jumps to his feet.

“What did you say?”

Wong smirks, but doesn’t tease.

“Some people came to me, asking if I knew where you were. They said they were from Asgard, and had crash landed on Earth a few weeks ago. I told them I would look for you.”

“What?” Thor exclaims, his eyes glistening. “W-where are they now? Are they still alive?”

Wong smiles. “If you would like, I can take you to them now.”

Thor nods his head excitedly. Wong waves his hands, and suddenly one of those big yellow circles begins to open up in front of him.

He hears her before he sees her.

“Your Majesty?”

Valkyrie’s smug face comes into view as she stands in front of a bunch of people with her arms crossed over her body. She is taken by surprise when Thor races through the portal and practically tackles her in a hug. She gasps and stiffens as he tightens his hold on her, but soon relaxes and hugs him back.

“You have no idea how happy I am to see you guys,” the young king whispers.

He steps back, and the tears roll down his cheeks. Valkyrie lets her tears fall too.

“We missed you too.”

Thor finally takes a look at his people. He realizes that Wong is gone, and that he is now in a field of grass. His people fill the entire field, which is encouraging, because it means the numbers haven’t gone down as drastically as he imagined. But they do look tired and worn. Some have tattered clothing, and some have dirty faces. They all have one thing in common, though.

They need a king.
