BACKSTORY: Omari has had a tough life since the day he was born. His mom died at birth, and after a year of being brought up by his father, the man sent him to a foster home and committed suicide. As a baby, he’s loved music and everything about it. One of the older girls, Akane, in his care home that looked after him, would always sing to him and play music for him. His favourite musician was Midnight. He didn’t know what it was about her that drew her to him but he always begged Akane to play her music. When he was able to talk that is. Akane and her twin brother, Akira, taught him how to play piano and guitar when he was five. He also loved football. He always played it with Akira, but he was almost always singing with Akane. It was when he was seven and Akane and Akira were 12 did they all get adopted by Kayama Nemuri AKA Midnight and Takeyama Yu. To say Omari was excited was an understatement. When they moved in with the couple, Omari begged Midnight to teach him and the twins more piano and guitar which she did happily.
Sometimes he would go to his mama’s Dance studio where he noticed a girl who looked like him. Well in skin colour. He wanted to talk to her, but he was too shy especially when he saw how energetic she was. He noticed that she would always look for him as well but he was too scared to do anything he was only comfortable being around his mum’s and siblings so he kept his distance and played on his DS or with his siblings in one of the other dance studios. Omari was quite a good dancer, but it wasn’t his favourite thing to do unlike singing and football, so he didn’t do it as often.
The first time he spoke to the girl (Mina) at his mama’s dance studio, was when she came to his house. Her dad was really late to pick her up. He finally gained the courage to speak to her, even if he was basically forced to since they were in the same car together. They became best friends from that day, and Mina slowly began to get him out his shell. They did everything together. His favourite thing to do with her was dance. Mina knew almost every kind of dance. Her favourite was break dancing and his was waltzing. It was weird to him, because he liked having her close to him, he wasn’t very sure why he did, but he did. Mina loved when he sang for her and played the guitar or the piano so he made sure to do it as much as he could. His moms and Mina's parents loved their friendship so much but also started bets on whether they would start dating or not. Even though the two were close, they didn’t go to the same school. Omari was home school most his life because of his social anxiety. It’s gotten better but he and his parents agreed to let him go to public school when he starts secondary.
Omari began to realise that something was different about him when he was ten years old. He had always like to dress kind of feminine, but he noticed it more when he asked Akane for her old dresses that she grew out of. He still liked wearing boyish clothes, but he preferred girly ones. The first person he went to about this was Mina. She didn’t know what to tell him, but she made him feel comfortable in who he was. Together they went to his moms and they told him that he was either non-binary or transgender. Omari didn’t know what any of those words meant, so he looked them up and came to the conclusion that he was transgender. Obviously, she first told Mina and together they told her Moms and together they came up with her new name: Ochako.
