Chapter Text
Lan Wangji is very very gay.
The realization came to him in waves, at first small things nudging him around, until it came in volumes as big as tsunamis momentarily drowning him. The biggest wave yet, being the scene in front of him at the moment. His breath stills inside his chest as Wei Wuxian dries his hair with a hand towel, a much larger one rising low on his hips to cover whatever modesty he has.
He just came from the shower, drops of water climbing down his naked chest. Lan Wangji swallows, not visibly, he hopes.
It’s his last year in university, and between research papers and classes, he had opted to avail of the dorm rooms this time to cut down his travel time. Their home is a good hour drive with the heavy traffic, compared to the few minute walk to the dormitories. He was skeptical about sharing a room with a stranger, but the students’ office had assured him they will have separate bedrooms aside from the common area with the small living room and bathroom.
And now he’s moving in, greeted by the sight of Wei Wuxian half naked in their shared space. He didn’t even know he would be his roommate.
“Oh. Sorry.” Wei Wuxian blinks up at him, apparently as surprised as he is, but not making any move to cover himself better. “It was late, so I thought my roommate would leave the moving to tomorrow.” He smiles, and a dimple shows in his left cheek.
Lan Wangji wants to lick it.
“I’m Wei Ying. Wei Wuxian. But you probably know that already.” Wei Wuxian says, holding out his hand.
He stares at it. He knows Wei Wuxian. Of course he knows. They had been classmates in a few elective courses, and the other had completely bothered him by staying asleep the whole time yet acing every single exam they had ever been given. At first, he thought the feeling was annoyance--because how can someone be so irresponsible, sleeping through all his classes like that?--and then it turned out to be concealed amazement, and suddenly he feels his heart pump just a little bit faster when he hears Wei Wuxian's laugh in the corridors, and he buries the bothersome feelings because he will not name them, not today.
But fate decided it should be today, instead. Lan Wangji is gay, with what looks like a massive crush on Wei Wuxian, and he swallows down the fact along with the pounding of his heart he can feel right in his throat.
He supposes he takes too much time processing his thoughts, because Wei Wuxian frowns as he puts down the hand he was offering. “You’re not a homophobe, are you? Like I know I’m kind of the local gay guy but I won’t automatically hit on you just because you’re male.”
Lan Wangji shakes his head. “No.” He’s not, and never been, a homophobe. Despite his strict and conservative upbringing, he never shared the same sentiments with his uncle. He did not see the point in hate.
“Oh good.” The smile is back, and the voices inside lan Wangji’s head scream louder. Gay!! “It would be hard not to make you uncomfortable around me if you are. That is to say, I make homophobes uncomfortable on purpose.” Wei Wuxian winks, mirth in his eyes. “But since you’re not, I’ll let you live.”
Lan Wangji’s brain cells feel like a dumpster on fire. “Thank you?”
“Nice.” Wei Wuxian nods in approval, a smile still on his face. “What’s your name?”
Lan Wangji feels like the dumpster fire inside his brain had been doused in cold water. Of course, Wei Wuxian would not know him. Despite being charming and friendly, the other had mostly kept to his small circle of friends, that is Wen Ning, Mo Xuanyu and Nie Huaisang. Lan Wangji doubts he even knows anyone from his classes that are none of those three, with him spending the whole time just taking naps all throughout and getting out of it as quick as he can. “Lan Zhan.” The name comes out without him meaning to. No one even calls him that anymore, with his brother also preferring his courtesy name. He doesn’t correct it.
“Ah, nice to meet you Lan Zhan! I hope I don’t annoy you too much! Although that’s impossible unless you have the patience of a saint.” Wei Wuxian squints at him. “Which you look like you do. I’ll try that out!”
Lan Wangji can feel his neck and ears get warm, his eyes unconsciously focusing themselves to a drop of water that came from Wei Wuxian’s hairline, cascading down to his smooth flawless neck and then his chest--
Wei Wuxian seems to have followed his gaze, coming into a conclusion that may have been correct for one reason rather than another. “Oh, sorry! I suppose you’re uncomfortable still with barely known men parading their wet bodies. I’ll dress up and mess with you more tomorrow, yeah? See you tomorrow, Lan Zhan!” Wei Wuxian sends him another charming smile, before hurling himself to what Lan Wangji supposes is his bedroom.
Lan Wangji remained standing there for a while, Wei Wuxian’s smile ingrained in his mind and the way he called his name still ringing in his ears.
Lan Wangji is gay, and he is in so much trouble.
