Chapter Text

Dear Jimin,

I just left my cabin. Seokjin-hyung packed my bags already so I didn’t have to go back, but I wanted to see it one last time.

I spent over half a year in that cabin. Every night, I lay in my bunk and let my mind wander. It’s the one place on the Sejong where I can be honest with myself, my thoughts kept safe by the darkness.

It will be empty for the rest of the mission, as both Dabin and I are leaving.

The final health assessment by the Medical Unit was completed 3 days ago. Dr Lee and his team are satisfied with the progress of my recovery. I can now walk unassisted, which is a huge milestone for the team, and for myself.

With the loss of vision in my right eye, the Navy is removing me from active duty. It’s logical - every officer on a Navy ship must be in top physical condition. Having me on the ship is a liability for the Captain and the crew.

The head of the Investigative Unit on the Sejong spoke with me privately. He thinks I’m a good fit for his team, and encourages me to apply for a position in the Unit when I get back. I’m definitely interested in finding out more. It’s not a career path I considered, as it’s mostly a desk job, but working with his team has been an enlightening experience. They carry out such important work, and every member of the team is extremely intelligent and welcoming. It’ll be an honour to work in the Investigative Unit.

The crew held a farewell party for Dabin and I last night. As you know, I’m not a party person, but it was a great opportunity to say goodbye to the crew.

I spent my entire adult life training or working at the ROKN. I want to serve my country, and doing so in the middle of the ocean is a dream come true. That option is gone now and I feel a bit hollow.

But it also means that I won’t be away from home for extended periods.

Jimin-ah, you have been extremely patient, and so supportive of my career from day 1. I know I placed a heavy burden on you, but you’re so strong, you carry it with such ease.

Meeting you was the best thing that happened to me.

I’ll be boarding a helicopter at 16:00 and arriving at the Incheon Naval Base by 17:30. I’ll have another physical examination after I land. If I receive the all-clear, I’ll be able to leave the base.

I’m coming home.

Love,
Yoongi

Notes:

The story has come to an end.

I'm going to miss Yoongi and Jimin.

I've not written fiction since I finished high school (!!!), this has been such a rewarding experience.

For those of you following this story on Twitter, all the uncredited photos I posted for the chapters are taken by yours truly. The ocean calms me too.

A big thank you to MY crew - Tash, Rachel, Fifi, Joanna and Gigi - for being my sounding board and cheer squad. Writing is a solitary experience - your support and kindness keeps me going. A big thanks also to Winz for the lovely moodboard.

And thank YOU for reading. I appreciate every kudo and comment.

Until next time x
