Chapter Text
Every Moment
“Mil-Prosecutor Edgeworth!” Phoenix called and smiled at him as the prosecutor turned, his silver bangs falling across his pale face that had an undeniable look across the handsome features, the look of fierce, no-nonsense success. The look that had brought many grown me to their knees. Edgeworth walked towards him unable to hide his smile, his win coupled with the fact he could finally get out of the office was enough to make even the demon prosecutor crack a smile. Phoenix sighed happily, Edgeworth finally felt comfortable with their relationship being pubic and whilst sharing a kiss in the courthouse would be inappropriate, he did subtly take Phoenix’s hand for a moment.
“You don’t have to call me that, I think we past the formalities when you moved in with me!”
“True, but its kind of sexy, Prosecutor!” He purred the title seductively, chuckling a little as Edgeworth blushed.
Edgeworth laughed softly, the sound like music to his lover’s ears, “you’re going to get me all hot and bothered!”
“Well we can’t have that, whatever will the press say,” Phoenix chuckled, “you did really well today, babe.”
“Thanks, I’m just glad its all over, it was getting rather scary at one point but I suppose the threats are all part of the job. Its not the first and certainly won’t be the last. Anyway, its over now and theres a bottle of merlot with our names on tonight. Are you heading back to your office?”
“Yes I…”
“Edgeworth, you bastard, I’ll kill you!” A menacing voice ran through the courtroom and the lawyers turned in shock.
“Miles no!” Edgeworth barely had time to register that a pistol was being pointed right at him before he was knocked off his feet, a weight crashing down on him as he fell to the floor with a harsh thud. Edgeworth groaned, he was bleeding, sticky red blood was dripping down his face but he couldn’t have been shot in the head, he’d be dead, wouldn’t he? A gun shot had fired though, he’d heard the unmistakable sound but he couldn’t have been hit, something had knocked him down out of the way of the bullet, that must be the only explanation, wasn’t it? Edgeworth wasn’t sure what was real anymore…
“Phoenix!” He screamed as he tried to get up to find his lover, the world was spinning, shapes were blurring as his head hammered. Struggling to move, he saw a man on the floor, he couldn’t see his face but he was wearing a blue suit and there was blood pooling around him.
“Phoenix!” Edgeworth shrieked, but he wasn’t sure if any sound was coming out of his lips, he wasn’t even sure if he was still conscious. Desperately he flailed toward the stricken man but barely made it a foot before people were surrounding him on the floor.
“Mr Edgeworth, its ok, the ambulance is coming.”
“Phoenix, wheres Phoenix?!” An oxygen max was placed over his face but he struggled and gasped, trying to get them away for him, he needed them to go to Phoenix, he was bleeding, he was injured. Why were they tending to him when his lover was hurt?
“Mr Edgeworth,” a familiar voice met his ears as an outline he vaguely recognised crouched next to him and held his hand, “Miles.” His first name was uncharacteristically used which made him guess it was Gumshoe, it was certainly a man, he thought, the world was still spinning. Maybe it was, maybe it was a ghost, was he even conscious?
“Phoenix is ok, you’ve hit your head you need to let them treat you.”
Darkness was threatening and he was vaguely aware that he was now on a bed, or perhaps the floor had turned to feathers, was this heaven, was he dead? The last sound he made was his lovers name tumbling from his lips before darkness at last consumed him.
“Mr Edgeworth?”
“Phoenix.” His voice was a croak, his head was throbbing and he was struggling to breathe. No idea where he was or what was happening, he remembered Phoenix being hurt and he sat up with a gasp.
“Mr Edgeworth you’re in hospital you were…”
A pair of hands were attempting to ease him back into bed, but he struggled against them. Why were they restraining him, he didn’t have time for this nonsense when Phoenix was hurt, “I need to get to Phoenix Wright, get your hands off me!”
“Mr Edgeworth, Sir, you have been…”
“I will have you arrested! Get you hands off me this instant!”
“Mr Edgeworth, Sir its ok.” Gumshoe bounded over and put a gentle hand on his shoulder, although his intention wasn’t to restrain him, the detective was twice the size of Edgeworth who gathered he wasn’t going anywhere.
“Gumshoe, Phoenix, how is Phoenix, I need to see him, tell these fools to get their hands off me or you will arrest them!”
“Mr Edgeworth, pal. Phoenix is ok, you can see him but you need to rest.”
“I will be doing no such thing, take me to him this second or don’t expect a paycheque next month!”
Gumshoe sighed, “ok but I have to take you in the wheelchair otherwise you can’t go, sorry Sir, Doctors order.”
As Edgeworth was wheeled into another room, trying to ignore the throbbing in his head, he saw Phoenix lying in a bed, he was hooked up to far too many machines for Edgeworth’s liking his face was pale but his eyes were open.
“Oh Phoenix!” Edgeworth gasped and practically stumbled to the bed sinking to the chair next to the bed, sure he was giving Gumshoe a flash of his boxers under the robe that he could feel gaping open. Desperately he held his lovers hand and before he knew it had collapsed into sobs his head resting against Phoenix’s body as he kissed his hand softly.
“You’re alive!”
“So I’m told.” Phoenix muttered wryly, clumsily stroking Edgeworth’s hair, “What happened to you?” He gestured at the dressing on his forehead.
“Oh,” Edgeworth touched his head, “I’m not sure, I didn’t wait for the doctor,” he admitted sheepishly, not letting go of Phoenix’s hand, not remotely concerned about himself and his likely pathetic injury.
“Mr Edgeworth has a concussion and a few cracked ribs. He needs to stay for observation for a few days but will be fine.” Gumshoe chimed in, his voice gentle and borderline patronising as if explaining something complicated to a small child.
“Miles what were you thinking?” Phoenix scolded mildly as he winced a little, the pain in his shoulder shooting down his body with a vicious jolt.
“I’m fine!” He snapped, “what happened to you? Were you shot?”
“Yeah.”
“Oh god!” Miles sobbed, a fresh bout of tears streaming down his face and neither noticed when the room emptied quietly, the only sound the prosecutor’s sobs.
“I’ll be fine,” Phoenix was trying to be reassuring but the strain in his voice alone contradicted his words, “the bullet got me in the shoulder, no vital organs, my shoulder is kind of busted, I’ve got to have surgery but long term I’ll be fine. I’m hardcore don’t worry!” He laughed softly but hissed a little and Edgeworth gingerly stood up and kissed him gently before half collapsing back to the chair.
“What were you thinking?” Edgeworth’s voice was soft as he wiped the tears from his eyes furiously.
“You know me, never look before I leap.”
“You took a bullet for me, you could have been killed.”
“I know, I just saw you about to get shot, I couldn’t bare to see you hurt. I guess I didn’t think the rest through.”
“Oh Phoenix, you’re the bravest human being, I love you so much I’m so glad you’re alive, thank you for saving me.” Edgeworth kissed his lovers hand his attempt to stop crying drastically failing, although at this moment it didn’t seem to matter.
“Franziska will be mad that I have to join the bullet in the shoulder club!” Phoenix muttered, trying to lighten the mood.
“She will,” Edgeworth agreed wiping his eyes once more chucking a little, “I’m so glad you’re ok, I don’t know what I did to deserve you.”
“I’m glad you're ok Miles, I saw that gun and I thought I’d lost you.”
“It’s ok, I’m fine and you will be too, I’ll look after you I promise.”
Edgeworth gently wiped Phoenix’s tears away, ignoring his own as he unsteadily reached over and kissed him gently, needing to be close to him. Nestling his head by Phoenix’s side, he listened to the steadying breaths until Phoenix was asleep, taking small comfort in his lover’s soft breathing before he too closed his eyes and drifted to sleep, hand in hand with Phoenix.
