Chapter Text
The few days before Saturday Nishinoya and Tanaka had spent a lot of time, and most notably all of their breaks, to discuss their next course of action. Noya had been quick to relay the information he had gathered so far after his visit to Asahi’s home. Among other things he still stood by the fact that if Asahi’s mom really wanted to eat him, he probably would let her. Although Tanaka was starting to seem actually worried about Noya being serious about that statement.
One thing was certain though, they were going to have to try and figure out whatever it was that Asahi was up to this Saturday. Just asking would be easy of course, but if Asahi really was a werewolf there was no way that he was going to tell the truth anyways. Besides, this way was just more fun. If they were lucky… Noya meant unlucky they might even get to see him transform. How awesome wouldn’t that be!?
The real issue was how they were going to go about it. One thing Noya had learned about his boyfriend since they started dating was the fact that he seemed to have a sixth sense… or was it seventh? Regardless, it seemed like Asahi was hyper sensitive when it came to noticing when other people were looking at him. So just straight up tailing him for the day was extremely risky and the probability of them blowing it early was a bit too big for their comfort.
For the time being both Nishinoya and Tanaka were seated in Noya’s room. Or, their headquarters for the operation as they called it. It was still fairly early, the air still crisp and the grass covered in dew. Asahi wasn’t a morning person. In all honesty Noya thought he probably was the furthest from a morning person that he had ever seen. Usually this was something Noya complained about. In the most loving way though of course. Today it was a good thing. It gave the two friends a bit more time to figure out what they should do.
“Aren’t there any like… good hiding spots around his house to use?” It wasn’t the first time either of them had voiced that question. Nishinoya scratched his head before responding. “No… At least none that give us a good look into his room.” In addition to that there was also the question whether or not spying on Asahi in his own room was taking it a bit too far even for them.
Tanaka just nodded in response. “But what about-“ He wasn’t able to finish his response before Noya’s phone vibrated. They both looked at it like it was possessed before Noya snatched it up off the ground.
Sugamama: Hey!! Since you are on your way there! Check how many gacha machines there are outside the entrance to the grocery store
Sugamama: I have to prove something to my brother!
For a good few seconds Noya just stared at the screen. What was Sugawara talking about? Most likely it was just a message sent to the wrong person. His suspicion was confirmed when a few seconds later his phone vibrated in his hand.
Sugamama: Sorry Noya! That was for Asahi
Noya could basically feel the way Tanaka was staring down at the phone over his shoulder. The grocery store. Asahi was heading to the grocery store. If he saw them there they could just play it off. Living fairly close to each other it was the same one Noya always went to as well. It was perfect. Nishinoya blessed the heavens for Suga’s accidental assistance.
The two friends only shared a look with each other before they were off the floor and rushing downstairs.
The both of them were sharing the same idea. If Asahi was changing tonight, going to the store would be his last second preparations for it. What would a werewolf need? Noya thought they would just hunt down any food they might need. It hadn’t occurred until now that that might not actually be possible. Mainly because it could be dangerous both for themselves but also other people living in the area. Surely, there was still going to be people out and about on a beautiful Saturday night, with a full moon to light up the sky. Clearly, they hadn’t done their research on werewolves and taken that into consideration when going out.
Arriving at the store they couldn’t immediately spot Asahi outside. Which wasn’t really too much of a surprise. After a quick glance along the street they head inside.
Still being fairly early there really weren’t many people in there. If it was good or bad Noya had yet to decide on. Finding Asahi really shouldn’t be much of a problem either way, but it meant less chance of the two friends being able to melt into their surroundings. They tried to keep their eyes open, looking for any sight they could of their cowardly ace. Noya was almost ready to give up when he felt Tanaka tapping his shoulder.
Ah… There he was. Nishinoya would recognise those hunched shoulders trying to make himself look smaller anywhere. Asahi’s hair was a mess, to say the least. Although oddly enough the messy bun almost made him look even more attractive. Noya felt the way his heart skipped a bit as he watched Asahi brush a stray piece of hair back behind his ear. Part of Noya wanted to just go up to him and burry himself into that wonderful chest. Already he could start to imagine the scent of Asahi’s shampoo that he always used.
“Oiiii, earth to Noya.” Most likely he would have kept staring for a pretty long time if Tanaka hadn’t started to wave his hand in front of Noya’s face.
“What! Shhh… I’m just… looking. That deserves to be admired.” Nishinoya used a hand to try and push Tanaka’s hand away to be able to see Asahi properly again.
“Yeah no it’s pretty obvious you think so. I think anyone can tell how big of a heart boner you got for that dude.”
Finally Nishinoya looked at Tanaka, his eyes filled with surprise at the other’s choice of words. His mouth fell open as he took a moment to collect himself.
“Heart--… Heart boner!?” Just as Nishinoya was about to burst out laughing Tanaka grabbed his shoulder and pulled him around the corner before covering Noya’s mouth with his hand. It was just in time too. Barely had they moved before their werewolf suspect had turned around after he thought he had heard something. Noya continued to fight, although meekly, to remove Tanaka’s hand.
“Fuck that was close bro.” Nishinoya took a deep breath as Tanaka finally removed his hand before nodding in response. It had been far too close. Stupid Asahi for being so attractive. How was any of that Noya’s fault really?
With a lot more caution this time the two of them started to follow Asahi. He did have one of those baskets you find at any grocery story in his hand. It looked like it was almost empty but from this distance it wasn’t possible to see what it was that Asahi had already put down into it.
For now it at least seemed that Asahi hadn’t noticed them. There was nothing odd about his behaviour either. Casually walking through the store and finding what he needed immediately, like he knew the place like the back of his hand, while also checking both twice and thrice on his shopping list to make sure he got everything that he needed. Really nothing stuck out. Nothing odd happening at all.
Things changed as Asahi seemed to be almost done shopping however. Towards the end there was obviously the section with snacks and the like, the section Noya knew the best, but there was also a corner with a small collection of pet things. Mostly food, but also a few toys. Noya watched with interest as Asahi glanced over the selection of treats from the section were you could pick what you wanted like you could with bulk confectionary. After, arguably what Noya would consider really quick for being Asahi when he made a choice, Asahi seemed to take two bags. One of them he put in something he took out from one of the boxes, that was unquestionably some sort of bone. What he put in the second one was a bit harder to tell from this distance.
Being satisfied with his choice Asahi walked away from there. When it seemed like he had gotten far enough away from there Noya pulled Tanaka with him to try and see what the second item was. Having been able to see which box it was, it shouldn’t be too hard to figure out. Nishinoya cast another glace behind him to make sure that they couldn’t be spotted before reading the label on the box. Dried pig ears.
Several thoughts were spinning through Noya’s ears. What did Asahi need those for? He had seemed so sure about what to get, so if it was for himself it certainly couldn’t be the first time he bought them. Of course, if you had a dog then buying these things were totally normal, no questions asked. The thing was… Asahi didn’t own a dog. None of their neighbours did either for that matter. Or at least that Noya knew of. He was sure that if there was Asahi would have told him immediately. Noya’s boyfriend liked dogs a lot, so Noya was sure he wouldn’t miss the chance to mention something like that the first chance that he got.
Looking at Tanaka it seemed he hadn’t come that far. Nishinoya was going to fill him in later when they were in the clear. Now Noya had something else that he wanted to do before he missed the chance.
While he had been examining the pet corner, Asahi had already headed up to pay for his things. Nishinoya grabbed Tanaka’s arm before dragging him outside before Asahi could see them. “Just act natural, we have just been chilling outside here,” Nishinoya instructed.
Tanaka made the least natural pose that Noya could have imagined. Anyone would be able to figure out that it was fake. However, the libero didn’t have enough time to comment about it before he heard the doors open. He spun around only to meet Asahi’s eyes immediately.
“Asahi! Hi! You are up early for once huh!?” Nishinoya basically bounced on his feet as he quickly approached his boyfriend who still seemed to be processing the situation. Soon enough a soft smile fell onto the giant’s lips. Noya could feel himself melting and turning into mush at the mere sight of it.
“Good morning Noya,” even Asahi’s voice was filled with affection despite how taken by surprise he seemed. “Yeah I just… had to buy some stuff.”
“Oh yeah, what kind of stuff?” Nishinoya asked curiously. But as he was about to lean over and see what the contents of the bag was Asahi pulled it away and held it closer against himself on pure reflex. Apparently, he didn’t want Noya to have a look and see what the contents were. Highly suspicious. Asahi’s shocked facial expression told Noya that he probably had figured out just how suspicious what he did just now looked.
“A-ah well…” Asahi scratched the back of his neck while an embarrassed blush spread over his cheeks. “Just the usual stuff really. Nothing special at all.”
Nishinoya hummed in response to that. The both of them knew that Noya wouldn’t buy that at all. Regardless, Noya chose to play along. Partially because he really didn’t enjoy the look on Asahi’s face very much. Noya knew that Asahi hated to lie, so he must be doing it for a good reason. If it was werewolf related, or something less interesting he had yet to figure out. Whichever it was Noya knew he didn’t have to worry. Asahi didn’t have a mean bone in his body and Nishinoya trusted him completely.
“I’m sorry I’m kind of in a hurry. I wish I could stay and talk but-“
“Naah, don’t worry! Just head off with your very normal uninteresting bag. But… you are forgetting something.” Nishinoya watched as confusion passed over Asahi’s face, his brows knitting a bit tighter as he tried to puzzle together and figure out what it was that Noya meant.
“Forgetting what?” The pure and innocent look on Asahi’s face once again reminded Noya of how he would literarily murder every single person on this planet were something to happen with Asahi.
Noya simply tapped his finger against his own cheek, while grinning wide. He quiet enjoyed teasing Asahi. Probably even a little bit too much. But he had calmed down a bit since when they had just started going out. There was a limit to how much the gentle giant was comfortable with he had figured out fairly quickly.
Asahi chuckled as his confusion was replaced with that wonderful smile that Noya loved so much. Nishinoya watched him lean forwards and knew that his plan was going to work. While Asahi was certainly aiming for Noya’s cheek, Noya felt a bit more greedy today. When the other was close enough Noya turned his head to press his lips against Asahi’s. Faintly he could hear the sound of someone in the background cheering him on.
It wasn’t long, and not particularly passionate either. That could wait until they were alone since Noya knew that Asahi would be able to enjoy it much more then. Yet, just a simple kiss seemed to send butterflies through Noya’s stomach. Almost like shooting off a canon. He could tell something similar was happening with Asahi. The worry Asahi had been exuding seemed to have vanished immediately, instead he was a lot more relaxed. Some soft laughter came from both of their lips as they smiled at each other in pure bliss and joy.
Maybe Asahi was a werewolf, but Noya be damned if he wasn’t going to love his big dork of a boyfriend regardless.
