Of Loss and Acceptance

Chapter 8: Acceptance- Raven

Chapter Text

“Come for a visit? As you see, I can’t get up and greet you.”

“I don’t know what’s gotten into you, lately. You’re awfully concerned with your looks.”

“Ha! I deserve that, don’t I?”

“Does anyone?”

“I’m so sorry, Raven. I should have seen- you.

“You did see me, Charles. You just didn’t like it.”

“No. I saw different. I saw what you looked like, what you weren’t, not you. Until I was truly able to see me.”

“And now? What do you see?”

“My friend- will you bring me my wheelchair? It’s time for us both to embrace ourselves.”

Notes:

I grew up a fan of the X Men. Whether because of a fanboy teacher who used to regale us with comparisons of some of his favourite Comic Book characters and Dr. King and Malcom X, or various television shows through the years, or even the original film versions, I've always admired the X-Men and their leader, Professor X. Whether he was training the overeager teens to reach their full potential, solving every problem with his mind (ha!), always knowing the answers, or being the strong or fearless leader who tended to be the ultimate go-to, the one thing that I noticed but never registered as part of his character was his lack of walking. Professor X was always a wheelchair user, that's true. And that's how he always appears in my mind's eye- a big, strong, powerful Mutant who happens to use a wheelchair/hoverchair/big-yellow contraption thing to get around when he's busy being his arrogant awesome self. However, I feel most of the "Origins" films reduced him to a "disabled person," and I was a bit disappointed that they made it a point to "fix" him whenever the chance was presented, rather than building his character to the one I've always admired, who just happens to use a wheelchair for his disability.
