Pair of Gloves

Chapter 2: Alternative Ending

Chapter Text

Upon the remembrance of joyful days, my hands trembled and began to lose their warmth even after i had interlaced each fingers and rubbed them together. A little part of me wanted to blame mother nature for casting such a crippling winter upon the earth, but mother nature itself was unintelligible. Not bothering to think long, I wore my gloves to ease the pores-piercing cold air. One by one my fingers slipped into the fabric and rested inside the warmth that embraced them. Funny to think that i should have had a budget to buy a new pair of gloves, but ended up using worn gloves which were never mine in the first place. Of course, it was an unintentional gift...and maybe a memoir that soon to be sunk down into the pit of oblivion. Considering that the fact the gloves were given by an old friend, I think it would be an impossible task to expunge them from my memories. The other possibility of a person that considered these gloves soon to be forgotten would be him. 3 months had passed by, but never had the screen showed any notification in which he demanded me to bring these gloves back to him.

My feet matched up the pace of pedestrians that had been strolling down the pavement. In the middle of people were struggling to walk normally, hurdled autumn leaves danced and flew along with the gust in the air. It was getting a litte hard to respire as my nose started to redden. The blood stream in my lips were getting restricted which resulted my lips became pale. Opposing against late autumn wind put my efforts in vain. My stomach was also a part of the rebellion in which resonated by the rumbling sound inside. It was a sign that i should look after a cafe or a shop to rest in. Luckily, my eyes caught a sight of a minimalist cafe between the book store and jewelry shop. I dashed into the cafe. The welcoming warmth greatly disparate with the hostile frigidity of outside. I exhaled a relieve breath and ordered a coffee and sandwich to soothe down my stomach which was revolting, begging to be nourished. I randomly talked with my stomach to calm down because after this, the sandwich and coffee will go down only to be devoured by them.

I couldn't be more pleased after the first bite of sandwich and the first gulped of coffee. Not many people were available in the cafe which was an additional value for me. There were no boisterous sounds implied. Only faint clink sounds of glasses, brewed latte, small chit chat came from other costumers i barely heard, and slow songs from the speaker. First song was not familiar in my ears as i neither ever heard the song nor the voice of the singer before. Nevertheless, it was a decent song. After it had done, I Almost Do came from the speaker. It almost brought me into surprise due to how this was my go-to song in my spare time. Everytime this song played in my playlist, i got drowned not only by the melody, but the lyrics.

The jingling sound of bell resonated in the room, meaning that there was a new costumer paid a visit. When my gaze fixed to this new costumer, i subconsciously gasped.
Small gasp indeed.
"Levi?????" I mentioned the name of the said costumer with a bit shaky voice, hopefully it was not my imagination seeing him standing in the same place with me.
"Hanji???" Said him. He never mentioned that he will come to my place, yet here, with all his well-being, he made his appearance in front of my eyes. Let's just say luck was in my side now.
"I didn't remember you will pay a visit?"
"Yeah.... I'm also quite surprised to see you here."
"For what?? I could have prepared things and show you around???"
"Nahh, i'd rather see you make that stupid face when you're shocked."
"That's rude!"
I playfully pulled my tongue out to mock him back. He gave me small scoff as he walked past me to make his order on the counter. Little did he know, my eyes caught a glimpse of thin upward stretch of his lips. If there was anything more expensive than a diamond or a gold, it was his smile.

Time had passed for God knows how long. The once fully cups of coffee and tea had been ran out half. Most of the time was spent by us, talking and chattering about things. Many things. His upcoming project, my newfound theories, recent favorite books, silly moments in my apartment, neighbors, and gazilion more.
"You know, i was chased by the dog while i was jogging across the park."
"Did it manage to bite your ass?"
"Hey!!! But yeah, luckily it didn't," i continued laugh remembering the moment that was happened back then. Communicating with him today really paid the price after years of yearning for him. I remember people told me how in heaven, happiness lasted forever with unlimited space and time. Living in reality said otherwise. But when a piece of heaven's chink was placed within the earth, you would soon imagine how taste of the concrete heaven for infinity would feel like.

"Hey, Levi, remember this?" I asked as i pulled out the gloves from my jacket pocket. He took the gloves to see it better. "Oh, yeah. You really insist to wear this, huh?" Levi said. "Yep. It fits me better, especially in my fingers."
"Well...." He said reluctantly. He took a tentative pause as he rubbed his pocket as if he wanted to reach something.
"Well??"
"I hope this fits your finger better too."
No.
Way.
The velvety black box was shown in front of me, revealing a small accented diamond ring. My eyes were widen. I felt my body became stiff. At this point, i didn't know how to process everything into one compiled timeline. I was sure enough i just got my first coffee this week to prevent hallucinations. Is this a dream?
"I didn't need to say the words did i??"
No. Definitely not a dream.
I slowly went from small laugh, babbling stuttered words, until i finally broke the waterworks from my right eye and followed by the next. Knowing the fact that this ring will determine my future, i teared up with a force of headwaters stream. With sobs that still contained in my voice, i replied,
"Yes, Levi."

END
-------------------------------

"Since when did you buy the ring?"
"Before i went to the cafe."
"Where did you buy it?"
"Jewelry store beside the cafe we went."
