Cold steel, soft feather (UNDET RECONSTRUCTION)

Chapter 10

Notes:

This took absolutely forever, I didn't abandon this work. I am so sorry, I went from posting like every day to taking like a week to update. Life has been kicking my ass more than normal and boy is it taking its toll, I had a big falling out with one of the few people close to me, but it's fine now we're doing good now. Anxiety is a bitch and depression, which it turns out I have, is a bastard.

The high motivation I had to do this work plummeted for a bit, but I am back and better my motivation at an all-time high. BUT me moping about life is not what you are here for, you want Warren and I am here to deliver.

Also on another note, SMUT I am honestly debating adding it at some point. The issue is this is the first thing I've ever written, and I have by far never attempted smut. If I do add it, it will probably be a stand along chapter so it will be optional to read. Opinions appreciated cause this story is no longer only for me.

Chapter Text

Warren developed a comfortable schedule with you over the next few weeks, Several days a week you spent watching him fly around the pond for hours on end, most Saturdays were spent at the mall with little issues, and Sundays were spent all gathers together in Peter's room for movie marathons. With Warren becoming a common sight in the halls far fewer students directed their attention to him which in turn helped him settle in better. Slowly several of Warren's belongs found their way into your room, men's shampoo and conditioner sat next to yours in the shower, two toothbrushes where there used to be one, and other miscellaneous items took over your counter and cabinets. You had even sacrificed one of your dresser drawers for Warren's clothes, he spent most nights with you rarely ever returning to his room on the lower levels. He hadn’t officially moved in the spare bed remained unused now pushed back up against the opposite wall that side of the room still slightly bare. Generally, the dorms were gender-specific but Professor made no move to prevent Warren from moving in.

It was early Friday, morning light peeking through your curtains, Warren sleeping soundly next to you as you run your fingers through his hair. He was on his stomach wing and arm draped over your stomach smallest hint of a smile playing at the corners of his mouth. letting your hand run down his neck to the base of his wings you began lighting scratching your nails under the feathers, keeping near the base but venturing out occasionally. Even in his sleep, you could tell he enjoyed it, his wings flexing slightly to allow you better access sighing deeply when you scratched a good spot. You spent most mornings like this, Warren waking up later than you almost always to your fingers through his hair or wings. Warren scrunching his nose and moving to run his hand down his face caused you to pause your hand movements. His wings fluttered under you and stretched outwards yawning once before he looked up at you.

"Guten morgen". Warren's voice was still gravelly from sleep.

You smiled, it didn't take you long to learn that meant good morning. "Guten morgen".

"Your accent is terrible". Warren joked, closing his eyes and turning his head in a silent request for you to mess with his hair.

Moving your hand back up to his hair you resumed your actions. Laying in relaxed silence for several more minutes until you were afraid Warren would fall back asleep. "It's Friday". You moved a stray strand of his hair back into place. "We could go out to the pond". He only grunted in response, seemingly far too comfortable to consider getting up. Warren was absolutely not a morning person, if it were up to him he would lay in bed all day, but it was not up to him. "Or we could walk around the strip". The strip was a good idea, Warren had never been there before. But still, he made no attempt to get up and you huffed. "Fine, stay here and be lazy but I am going to shower and walk around the strip".

Turing the water on for your shower you heard a grumble and the familiar sound of your bed creaking, looking up warren was leaned against your bathroom door frame. He was yawning and blinking slowly but he had at least gotten out of bed. Reaching for the hem of your shirt Warren turned around instantly wings thumping in the doorway as they flared behind him, you couldn’t help but laugh at his actions. "Warn a guy maybe".

"We've been dating over a month Warren, I think you can see me without a shirt on". Warren mumbled something in response, his feet staying rooted where they were. Rolling your eyes you finished undressed and stepped in the shower, Warren refusing to turn around him he heard the shower curtain close. Reaching for your shampoo you heard your hairdryer kick on, Warren undoubtedly running it over his wings he claimed it was to help smooth any out-of-place feathers, but you could tell he just enjoyed the warmth. Finishing your shower with the buzz of your hairdryer in the background you realized you forgot a towel. "Warren hand me a towel". He couldn't hear you over the noise. "Warren!" The hairdryer buzz came to a halt.

"What?" Warren sounded sleepier now the warm air lulling him.

"A towel Warren, I need a towel". You could hear Warren place the hairdryer back on the counter and open your towel cabinet.

Warren stuck his hand in your shower holding a towel. "Here".

"Thanks". Taking the towel you dried off, running it through your hair to get some of the water out. Wrapping yourself up you stepped out, Warren had his arms on the counter his face buried behind them still tired. Securing your towel in on hand you reached out running your nails through his hair at the base of his neck, he groaned quietly moving his head to the side for better access. You chuckled lightly still trailing your nails through his hair, for such a tough guy he turned soft any time you messed with his hair. The warmth from your shower cooled leaving you cold, Warren grunted a displeased noise when you removed your hand and made your way to your dresser.

"I'm changing". Warren never responded, you wouldn't be surprised if he had fallen asleep on the counter. Shuffling through your dresser and putting on your clothes you paused at Warren's unfolded shirts sharing your drawer. He probably wouldn't mind if your borrowed one, searching through his shirts you found the one you wanted. Laying the black shirt flat on your dresser you smoothed your hands over the Metallica logo, he wore it once a week at least. You flipped the shirt over in your hands slipping it on and inhaling deeply at warrens scent, cool air filtering through the large slits made in the back causing you to shiver. Walking back into your bathroom Warren was breathing deep and evenly on your counter his wings touching the floor behind him, reaching over him you grabbed your hairdryer clicking it on. Warren stirred at the sound peeking up just enough to look at your face squinting at the light wings stretching out behind him not seeming to notice his shirt yet.

When your hair was almost completely dry you shook Warren slowly he sat up arching his back stretching his arms out in front of him, turning the hairdryer to his wings they flexed into the warmth. You smiled at the displeased look he gave you when you clicked it off reaching to unplug it from the wall. Warren stood next to you, his thoughts still clouded from sleep, and rolled his shoulder two pops sounding from the movement. Grabbing your toothbrushes from their holder you noticed Warren squinting at the mirror wheels turning in his head finally, he seemed to recognize his shirt. Fighting your smile you reached out to hand Warren his toothbrush and he turned to look at you, hands never moving to grab his brush.

"My shirt". Warren's voice wasn't quite as deep as it was when he woke up, but it was still an octave lower than normal.

Your smile broke through. "Yeah, figured you wouldn’t mind".

Warren cleared his throat. "I-Yeah, no I don't". Warren's eyes flickered across the entirety of his shirt, it was large on you reaching your thighs.

"Good, cause I wasn't planning on taking it off". Warren's eyes widened a fraction, he looked on the verge of responding but never said anything.

Warren finally took his toothbrush from your outstretched hand and you turned on the sink. Occasionally you could catch Warren staring at his shirt through the mirror, his eyes snapping back his reflection when you noticed him. You raised an eyebrow asking a silent question. "Nothing just looks good on you". Warren refused to make eye contact with you through the mirror.

Spitting your toothpaste in the sink you smiled. "Thanks". Warren just continued to stare at you. "Are you going to shower or?"

Shaking his head he blinked rapidly. "Shit, yeah". When Warren turned to get a towel you made your way back to your room to wait. You never closed the bathroom door allowing the warmth from the shower to make its way into your room. Walking to your desk you dug through your draws searching for one of the few items you were able to bring from home, finding what you were searching for you pulled out a small cassette player. You had seen Warren move some of his cassettes with his items, but he never played them or brought anything in to play them on that you had seen. Flicking through Warren's items in one of your drawers he had claimed you found a small stack of cassettes, none of them were labeled so you picked on at random popping it in your player and pressing play.

You laughed at the familiar guitar strumming through the speakers unable to not move to the beat. You turned up the volume on the verge of too loud, even with the music as loud as it was and the sound of water you could hear Warren singing the lyrics. You learned quickly Warren had a strong attachment to music, any rock song that played through the radio Warren knew even with his short time back in America. Several songs later Highway To Hell filling the room as Warren shut the water off, you reached over turning the music down slightly. Warren emerged from the bathroom water still dripping from his hair and wings towel held firmly around his waist. He bobbed his head walking to the beat of the song you allowed yourself to admire the sign of him walking by you, your eyes lingering where his wings meet back.

Leaning down to find his clothes in his drawer wings flicking out behind him water droplets flinging through the air. Warren found his clothes straightening up still moving to the beat you noticed he was lip-syncing the song smile playing on his features. Warren retreated back to the bathroom you watched his hips peeking over the towel before he disappeared. You heard him beating on your bathroom counter to the song not long after, shaking your head at his antics. The song came to an end and the cassette stopped, Warren walked back into your room his expression light and happy hair still dripping down the back of his jacket. "Are you ready?"

"Ready as I'll ever be". Mock annoyance laced his tone. Giddy at Warren's good mode you bound over to him reaching up tangling your hand in his wet hair dragging him down for a kiss. Warren leaned down with no resistance you could fill the smile on his lips through the kiss. Breaking away in need of breath Warren rested his forehead on yours his breath mingling with yours.

Sliding your hands down you traced your fingers over his arms, a knock at your door broke you away. You didn't know who you suspected would be outside your door but the Professor was not them. "Hello y/n". Turning his head to glance around you the Professor nodded. "Warren".

"Professor". Warren's tone was even again.

The professor smiled. "I only came to check-in, but it seems things are going fine". He looked you and Warren over once. "Heading out?"

"Out to the strip, just check the place out". You looked behind you smiling at Warren, you could see the small smile peeking back at you.

The Professor propped his head in his hand. "Well as luck would have it, I had Hank pick up a gift for you and your friends". You raised your eyebrows in a mix of shock and confusion, the Professor only smiled back at you. "You'll find it in the garage, as often as all of you are out I decided a personal ride was in order". Your mouth fell open.

"Professor you didn't". Surely he doesn’t mean what you think he means.

Sitting back up the Professor simply gave you a look turned himself around leaving you shocked standing in your doorway. Warren walked up behind you wrapping his arms around your stomach chin resting on your shoulder. "Did he buy us a car?"

"I think so". You turned your head to look at him, your eyebrows still pulled in confusion.

"Holy shit". Warren made his way over to the black car in a few long strides. You recognized the car immediately, a 67 Camaro convertible, for a car over fifteen years old it was in excellent condition. Waren ran his hand over the hood fingers tracing along the sides as he made his way around it, a look of amazement on his face. You walked over beside Warren opening the driver's side door, keys in the ignition you pulled out your key ring attaching it to the key. Top already down Warren found his seat next to you, seeming happy with the room for his wings his leather jacket squeaking against the leather of the seats. Turning the key the engine roared to life settling on a purr soon after, turning on the radio rock played through the speakers automatically you rolled your eyes the Professor thought of everything.

"This is amazing". Warren stated eyes scanning over the interior of the car.

Slowly you pulled out of the garage your fingers drumming to the beat of the music. Removing one hand from the wheel you grabbed your sunglasses from your shirt to shield your eyes from the harsh summer sun. Warren squinted at the bright light outside the garage and you made a mental note to look for him some sunglasses. It wasn't a long drive you probably could have walked if you wanted to but there was no way you were missing driving this car. Parking very carefully ensuring nobody would ding the car with their doors you turned off the car handing the keys to Warren, he buttoned them safely in his jacket pocket. People were already starting to stare at Warren but he never paid them any mind, keeping his focus on you as he stepped out of the car and joined you by your side.

The strip was just like you remembered it had been a while since you been here but it was familiar, several stores liked both sides of the road. People lined the sidewalks it was busy but less than you had suspected for a Friday morning. Warren's eyes were still adjusting to the harsh light making your first mission finding somewhere that sold sunglasses, grabbing Warren's hand he fell into pace beside you. It didn't take long to find a store with several pairs of glasses on display on the big open windows, Warren following behind you as you opened the door. A bell chimed as the door opened and closed behind you Warren's eyes wandering over the store halting in the glasses.

"You need a pair it's summer". Releasing his hand you nudged him with your shoulder towards the display. Placing your own glasses back on your shirt you helped Warren pick between a few pairs. "What color do you like?"

"Black". Warren picked up a pain reflecting the light of the lenses.

Shaking your head you laughed. "I don't even know why I asked". Picking up the closed black pair you saw you looked them over. The lenses were black but light enough to see through, the frame was more of a silver than black feeling they weren't Warren's taste you placed them back. "These are nice". They were similar in shape to the one you had just placed back down, a black metal frame and black lenses too dark to see into. Warren picked them from your hands looking over the front before trying them on, they looked good on him sunglasses make everyone look better and for Warren slightly more intimidating.

"Those are Ray-Bans, one of the more expensive brands we carry". You hadn't even seen the woman approach, while her tone was nice her words held judgment.

You gave her the tightest smile you could manage. "Money is not an issue".

"The basic aviators are $50". Judgment was breaking through to her tone now. "Polarized and mirrored like the ones you have are $80". She crossed her arms head tilted to the side obviously thinking she had won.

Reaching into your front pocket you pulled out your card, the familiar X marked across the card. The professor had given everyone on the X-men one, even while you weren't on the team you had been gifted one anyways. You had turned it down at first insisting you didn't need it but he had insisted, claiming he had no shortage of money and you had deserved it. "Is that all?"

The woman moved back slightly, taken aback by your response. Her jaw clenched annoyed and swiftly walked back to her counter. Warren snickered behind you sunglasses still covering his eyes, if not for his smile you couldn't read his emotions. "Thank God for the Professor". You sighed, holding out your hand Warren gave you the glasses and followed you to the counter. The woman reached behind her picking up one of the brown cases from the shelf. "Black actually". You called, the hand by her side clenched the other grabbing a black case a little aggressively.

"Will that be all?" Her voice was strained eyes staring down at you coldly.

Sliding your card on the counter you smiled. "I believe so".

The woman kept her mouth shut after that ringing the glasses up and swiping your card, a look of distaste when the purchase went through. Placing your card back on the counter and the glasses in a small bag Warren snatched the bag from her hand as you grabbed your card. The woman inhaled sharply when their hands touched, Warren opened the case immediately placing the glasses back on his face.

"How do they look?" You could see an eyebrow raised just slightly over the frame smirk plastered on his face.

You offered Warren a real smile. "You look ruggedly handsome". Warren preened in the compliment squaring his shoulders wings fluffed and spread slightly behind him. Warren was looking down at you his glasses sliding down to the end of his nose his eyes visible over the top of them. "We have more stops to make if your done basking in your compliment". Warren huffed a laugh eyes flicking back over to the woman behind the counter he used his middle finger to pushed them back up his nose, there was an offended scoff. Warren had the door open for you following close behind after you exited, you laughed once the door finally closed behind you.

"I saw you shoot her that bird". It was meant to sound accusing but it wasn't even close.

Warren never turned his head towards you, but even with seeing his eyes, you knew he was looking at you. "That's only because I wanted you to".

"I'm sure it was". You rolled your eyes jokingly. "But it was pretty funny, she's gonna be pissed at that for years". You laughed out, Warren settling into a comfortable pace next to you occasionally glancing in the windows.

Warren snickered at the thought. "I hope so".

"You are absolutely terrible". You laughed out, Warren knowing you weren't serious.

"Maybe, but she was being an ass to you". You felt a flutter in your chest at his words. "And nobody gets to do that but me".

You wrapped your hand around Warren's elbow. "You're not an ass to me".

"I used to be". Warren mumbled out.

You signed. "I guess I can't deny that, but it's fine look where we are now".

"Thank you". You could tell he struggled with the words.

Giving his arm a reassuring squeeze you responded. "You don't have to thank me Warren".

Several stores and even more things you bought for Warren he insisted he didn't need later it was past time for lunch. "How does lunch sound?"

"I am starving". Warren responded instantly.

You laughed. "Why didn't you say something sooner?" He only shrugged in response. "There's a Steak n' Shake a few minutes walk from here".

"Works for me".

Warren could eat a lot, he had eaten most of the cheese fries you were supposed to share and was halfway through his burger without even beginning to seem full. Picking through the few reaming fries you watched Warren eat across from you. You were proud of him within less than a month he managed to be comfortable around strangers, comfortable with the stares out in public. He was doing good, great even, better than you had ever hoped he would. He smiled a lot more now his face less tormented and guarded, his wings looked great too, pure white and healthy, if you were lucky you could catch him admiring them. He was doing his best to be happy to let people close to him, you knew it was hard for someone with a past like his, but he was trying and you loved him for that.

You froze at your own thought, you love Warren. You shouldn’t be surprised of course you love Warren but admitting that in your mind so thoughtlessly was new. "Are we getting shakes?"

"Of course". You laughed saving your thoughts for later.

Paying for your meal shakes in hand you and Warren made your way back to the car. Warren's hand was on the volume knob before he had even closed his door, cranking Rock You Like A Hurricane loud enough to cause people to stare. Reaching to situate your glasses back over your eyes warren copied your action before crossing his arms behind his head relaxing. Driving down the road back to the mansion you found yourself singing any lyrics you knew.

Notes:

Hi, this story is mainly just for me, due to the fact I feel like the number of warren stories is insultingly low. So some stuff may tend to be descriptive of me. But I figured no harm in posting it anyway. BUT that being said I have no posting schedule I post as I get inspiration. I may post and decide I want to change it a week later WHO KNOWS.

Just so nobody confused I made the characters power projectile manipulation with a little extra. This means anything moving can be stoped and manipulated to move however you feel. EX; Someone throws a paper ball at you and it hits you? No, said paper ball is redirected and shot back now embedded in the wall next to their face as a paper dagger. Obviously, there is more to this power that I can't explain here such as, how many objects can you manipulate at one, how big of objects can you manipulate, what counts as a projectile. But I will try and clear this up as best I can throughout the story.
