The Best Friendships Form During Train Rides

Chapter 3: Is This Seat Taken?

Chapter Text

Tubbo had waited for long enough, he had decided to get on the train at 10:55. If Tommy was gonna make it, he'll wait for him in the compartment. He climbed in the train and took a left, but immediately stopped when he was met by two people. "Wait, if you're here, where's Tommy?" Tubbo questioned the twins who stood before him.

Wilbur and Techno looked at each other then back at Tubbo, "We sorta, kinda le...ft him at home?" Wilbur said.

"What the hell?" Tubbo questioned.

"Yeah, kinda on me, not gonna lie," Techno said. "Phil had to leave for urgent work stuff so he left us with the neighbor who's supposed to apparate us here. I though he was holding on my shirt already, but apparently he went back inside and yeah, the neighbor's gonna bring him here soon."

A loud whistle from the train and the slight shake indicated that they were now leaving the station.

"Yeah, the neighbor's gonna bring him straight to Hogsmead soon," Techno corrected.

"Does that mean I have to sit alone?" Tubbo whined.

"Uhh, you can sit with us if you want?" Wilbur offered.

"Nah, I'll be fine, thanks," Tubbo said. "It's about time I make other friends anyway," he cringed at the thought. Don't get him wrong he likes making friends, it's just so, so awkward. Especially since it's second year, meaning most people in his year had already made friend groups,

Tubbo left to find an empty compartment. Yes. This is how people make friends. He thought as he stared at the empty seat across him. Yeah, he chickened out.

Tubbo groaned in boredom. He was gonna spend a whole seven-ish hour train ride alone and no one to talk to. Maybe I should have brought my owl with me in here. He thought as he tried to imagine him bringing his owl in the compartment rather than putting him away with the other pets. "Nah, that'll just make me look crazy. Talking to an owl that is."

"Yeah, that would, really."

"Holy shit!" Tubbo jumped and pressed himself against the other side of the compartment facing the door.

"Oh, sorry, didn't mean to startle you,"  a tall boy with white and black hair said. "Umm, I was looking for a place to sit at and this is the only compartment with free space."

Tubbo could still feel his heart beating fast from the shock and so he spoke from instinct, "Nope!"

The other boy looked surprised at the answer, "Oh, okay then," he said and closed the compartment door.

After realizing what he had done, Tubbo buried his head in his hands. "Well, there goes a possible friendship..." Or you can play it off coolly, ya know? A voice in his head said. "That could work," Tubbo said to himself.

He moved over to the door and peaked at the compartment door window and found the boy still standing outside, on the train's corridor, thinking about something. Tubbo slid the door open slightly. "Hey," he called.

The boy turned around, "Oh, hey."

"What's your name?" Tubbo asked.

"Uhh, Ranboo. what about you?" Ranboo asked.

"Tubbo. I'm a second year," Tubbo said.

"Me too!" Ranboo exclaimed.

Then realization struck Tubbo, "Holy fuck! You're tall!" He exclaimed. This guy was in the same year as him..."Where did you get long legs and where could I buy some?"

That sent Ranboo in a fit of loud laughter. "Shit, did I say that out loud?" Tubbo asked, which made Ranboo double over on the floor. "It's not even funny, why the hell are you laughing!" Tubbo said.

"I—it just caught me off guard, is all," Ranboo said. "Where can I—I buy some," he laughed again.

"You know what, I was considering letting you in," Tubbo said. "I guess that's out the window."

"No, wait! I'll stop, I'll stop," Ranboo exhaled heavily. "Okay, I'm good."

There was an air of silence for a while. "So," Tubbo faked a cough to start the conversation. "uhh you said you're a second year but you're not sorted yer?" He asked, eyeing the boy's plain black robes.

"Yeah, I uhh, transferred from Durmstrang," Ranboo said.

Tubbo furrowed his eyebrows, "Why?"

"My mom said it'll be best if I went to a school closer to home because of my umm memory problems and all that," Ranboo said.

"Memory problems?" Tubbo asked.

"I'd rather not," Ranboo said.

"Oh uh, Durmstrang huh?" Tubbo asked.

"Yeah, it was my Dad's old school," Ranboo said. "I'm a half-blood you see. Mom's a muggle, dad's a wizard."

"I'm also half-blood, both parents are wizards though," Tubbo said.

Silence took over again."You wanna mess with the prefects?" Tubbo asked. He was out of conversation topic, alright?

"Umm," Ranboo looked unsure.

"You can come in if you come with me," Tubbo negotiated.

"Deal," Ranboo accepted immediately.

"Oh wow, you didn't need much convincing did you?" Tubbo laughed as he left the compartment, leading Ranboo to the compartment where he knows the prefects were staying in.

"What exactly are we doing?" Ranboo asked as he followed the short brunet.

"Just a couple of jinxes," Tubbo answered.

"I only know the Jelly-Legs Jinx," Ranboo admitted. "But, I'm a fast learner, so if you know anything else, I could probably do it."

"Oh, well there's..." Tubbo began listing off jinxes that he knows how to do, which is a lot for a second year.

"Okay, I think that's easy enough," Ranboo said.

"Great! Let's try it out," Tubbo said.

"Oh shoot," Ranboo said.

"What?"

"Won't we get in trouble for this?" Ranboo asked. "It's literally me first day here."

Tubbo waved his hand dismissively, "It's fine, as long as we aim for prefects that I'm friends with. Like him," Tubbo pointed to a guy with green hair. "Hey Sam!" Tubbo called out.

"Oh, hi Tubbo," Sam said, "Who's your friend?"

"My name's Ranboo." Ranboo said. "And I am so sorry for this."

Sam furrowed his eyebrows, "Wh—"

"Melofors!" Ranboo exclaimed. When the spell hit Sam, his head suddenly became encased in a pumpkin.

"What the—" Sam quickly cast the counter spell, making the pumpkin split in half, yet some of the pumpkin juice and seeds still stuck to him. "Get back here, you two!" He yelled.

Tubbo aimed his wand at the older, "Impedimenta!" He yelled, making Sam's movements very slowed down. "Bye Sam!"

"C...o...m...e......b...a—"

The two didn't stay long enough to hear the whole sentence. "Next up, the Head Boy," Tubbo said as he pulled Ranboo along with him.

"Wait, they're head boy?" Ranboo asked pointing to a person who was telling off a couple of first years for something.

"Yeah, why?" Tubbo

"I know them," Ranboo said. "Eret comes and goes at the ministry where my dad works at. Probably looking for an opening since they're graduating."

"Great! Then he won't suspect you," Tubbo said pushing Ranboo forward.

Ranboo walked towards Eret, "Umm hey," he said.

Eret hummed before looking behind him. "Oh, hi, you're uhh, Ranboo right?"

"Yeah, I was just wondering where the bathroom is?" Ranboo asked as he pretended to raise his hand that was holding his wand to his neck, but instead shot a spell by Eret's nape.

Small chunks of ice slid down to Eret's back making them yelp, "Holy!" He scrambled to get the ice out of his robes.

"Sorry!" Ranboo couldn't help but laugh as he ran back to Tubbo.

"Holy shit. You actually did it," Tubbo cackled as they retreated. "If that was me, I wouldn't have gotten anywhere near him with my wand out."

Ranboo laughed, "Who next?"

"There's always Callahan, or maybe Schl—oof," Tubbo stopped his tracks when he collided with a taller person.

"Maybe who, now?" Tubbo and Ranboo looked up and saw an older student.

"Hey, Schlatt," Tubbo stretched the 'hey' out.

"Are you drinking Firewhisky?" Ranboo asked. "Isn't that like, not allowed at school?"

"Not if you're of age, and good at hiding shit," Schlatt said. "Now what the fuck are you two up to?"

"Nothing," Tubbo said, hiding his wand behind his bag.

"Yeah," Schlatt said as he took a sip of his drink. "Go back to your compartment. I saw what you did to Sam."

"How are you a prefect?" Ranboo asked.

"Ha! Don't question it kid. There weren't many choices," Schlatt said. "Now, go away before I actually put you in detention." He pushed the two away fro where they were heading at.

"Well, on the bright side," Tubbo started as they walked back. "Schlatt won't rat us out to the professors."

"Yeah, that was pretty fun," Ranboo said.

Another air of silence enveloped them.

"Do you have pets?" Tubbo asked suddenly as he opened the compartment door.

"Yeah, lots actually," Ranboo said. "I even brought one of them with me, Enderches—Shoot! Where did my cat go?!" He exclaimed, frantically looking around when he remembered he was holding Enderchest earlier.

"Is this Enderchest?" Tubbo asked as he picked up a Kneazle from the seat inside the compartment.

"Yes!" Ranboo reached out to get his cat. "How'd you manage to wander in there?" He asked the cat.

"And I'm the crazy one for thinking of talking to my owl," Tubbo murmured.

"So, uhh is that seat taken? Can I get in, now?" Ranboo tilted his head with a smile.

Tubbo smirked, opening the door, "Yeah, alright. Get in."
