Chapter Text
Even as a child, Katsuki wanted nothing to do with his soulmate. It wasn't their fault of course, regardless of what he said. It was more of him questioning why he should care so much about a person he might never meet? His parents would tease him about it but Katsuki wasnt stupid, the moment he learned about soulmates and daemons he had looked up the statistics on how likely you were to meet your soulmate. And it was about 50/50. He had a 50% chance of meeting his soulmate, and honestly he didn't care for those odds. Why get attached to a person you don’t know right?

“Get out of my way useless Izuku, might as well call you Deku at this point.” Katsuki grins evilly, looking down on the green haired boy. Said boy had a scrape on his knee, smudges of dirt on his face and clothes, round eyes filled with tears and a quivering lower lip. He keeps attempting to talk, but gets interrupted by Katsuki’s ruthless mockery.
“Stop being so mean Kacchan-” The poor boy is interrupted yet again, this time by something other than his childhood-friend-turned-bully. It's a daemon. Both Katsuki and Izuku look at the animal in shock. They look at each other for a moment, before looking back at the animal. Katsuki decides to ignore it, and continue with what he was doing.
The daemon intervenes, jumping forward and tackling Katsuki to the ground. He flails his arms as he attempts to dislodge the animal. Izuku moves to help the blond, but eventually leaves due to the blonde ever so specific threats.
Eventually Katsuki reorients himself, and looks at the daemon. It's clearly not Deku’s, considering Katsuki’s 5th birthday just passed and it didn't try to follow the green haired boy as he left. He glares down at the offending animal, who just looks back up and wags its tail.
“What are you looking at?!” He shouts
***
Katsuki reluctantly leads his daemon home, somewhat intentionally running in a halfhearted attempt to lose it and avoid the conversation with his parents.
It was not meant to be.
The first thing he hears when he gets home is his fathers calm greeting and his mothers shouting.
“KATSUKI WHY THE HELL DIDN'T YOU TELL ME YOU GOT YOUR DAEMON?!”
“SHUT UP MOM I'M HERE NOW AREN'T I?!” he shouts back, “It just happened like 10 minutes ago jeez.” He mutters,
“Well, at least you’re home son.” His father mediates, “Did you have any questions about soulmates or daemons?” Masaru asks
“Can I get rid of it?”
His parents' faces mirror each other in a state of shock.
“Katsuki, why would you want to get rid of your daemon? It's a representation of your soulmate.” Masaru asks curiously, placing a hand on his wife's shoulder to keep her from exploding.
“Don't want a soulmate.” Katsuki pouts, looking down at his feet.
“Listen up brat. I’m only gonna say this once. The universe doesn't care if you want a soulmate. It gave you one anyway. You don't have to be grateful about it or anything but the fact is that you’ve got one. Hell you might never meet ‘em, not everyone does. My parents weren't soulmates. But maybe you should at least get to know your daemon a bit. Especially since I doubt it wants to leave your side.” She finishes, gesturing to how the daemon was happily curled up by Katsuki’s feet, wagging its tail and grinning. Katsuki just scowls at his daemon, who just wags its tail even faster.
-
“So what do you think your soulmates like?”
“Not sure exactly, my daemon is super shy though, so maybe she’s quiet?”
“Lucky, shy girls are always super cute! My daemon is supper chatty, not that I mind. Girls talking about their interests is really attractive.”
“Hey Kacchan, what's your daemon like?” an irritating voice nags, over his shoulder. Unfortunately for him, the nerd’s question garners the quiet attention of everyone in the class.
“None of your business.” Katsuki growls, attempting to divert his attention to the assignment in front of him.
“S-sorry, didn't mean to intrude-” He tries,
“Hey, don't apologize Midoriya. It’s exactly like Bakugou to not want to talk about it. Honestly I doubt he has a soulmate period. That's why he won’t talk about it.” One guy sneers, causing a few cautious laughs from the gathered students. The students appear to take back his words as Katsuki turns his glare towards him.
“Wanna repeat that?” He asks, voice frigid. Everyone freezes. They're all used to Bakugou's explosive outbursts, none of them had ever seen him like this. “Because It’s none of your business. I don't have to defend shit to you extras.”
The topic is soon dropped, nobody in class wanting to deal with this new version of Bakugou’s fury. The school day eventually finishes, and the students are released to do as they pleased. Katsuki heads home, followed by Deku. The nerd who hadn’t stopped blabbering about his own daemon.
“I mean I wasn’t expecting a bunny, but that's ok. He’s adorable. Apparently he's a Scottish Fold, but I just call him Mochi. Speaking of which, did you name your daemon yet, also what breed is it? I didn't see your daemon for very long so I can't tell.” The blond just keeps walking, ignoring the presence following him. “Oh come on. I just wanna know a little. I promise I won't ask any more questions if you answer now.” He says, raising his hand as if to say he solemnly swears. Katsuki just raises an eyebrow.
“You better. Her name is Missy, and she's a German Shepard.” he mutters, continuing his walk home. Deku keeps his mouth shut, but anyone could tell by looking at him that he had a million questions. Katsuki’s house came second on the route home, so once split off from him he could continue the rest of his walk in peace. At least, until he stepped into the front yard.
Where he was promptly greeted by a wet kiss from his daemon.
“Ugh get offa me you slobbery monster. At least let me get inside before you make a mess.” He complains, too exhausted from dealing with idiots (classmates) at school. He pushes the daemon down off of him, and eventually makes his way inside the house. After an idle conversation with his parents about school, and a quick shower, Katsuki finally lets himself relax. He settles down in a chair and attempts to get started on homework. Missy however, had other ideas. She settles her head in his lap and looks up at him. And damn, puppy eyes had never made so much sense before now.
“What are you looking at?” she just blinks at him. “I don't need you, you know. You can leave. You should actually, it would be better. Because I don't want any extra to hold me back, not even my soulmate. So-” He gets cut off by Missy climbing up and curling into his lap. Katsuki flounders for a moment, unbelieving that his daemon would be so comfortable with him. Especially considering his temper and constant outbursts. “-So don't you dare hold me back ok? If you plan on sticking around, you better be by my equal. And don't think this makes us buddies either.” he finishes. His words seem to perk the daemon up. Her tail begins wagging and she presses another wet kiss onto Katsuki’s face. He groans and pushes her face away, but the action does little to dampen the daemons mood.
-
When Katsuki started high school, he expected the whispers. He expected the gossip that had been following him around since middle school. Hushed whispers as he walked by talking about him, saying things like; “That's Bakugou, can't believe someone like him has a soulmate.” or “Can you see how he treats his daemon? God I feel bad for whoever got him.” Useless extra talk. He walked past their whispers, sending a glare towards people who got a bit too bold with their comments. He ignores most of them, and heads toward his first class.
He never made it.
“God what is wrong with you? How can you treat your daemon like that?” One girl calls out to him. Katsuki turns, glaring at the offending voice. She’s a shorter girl, with closely cropped black hair and glasses. Around her ankles is a small dog, an Italian Greyhound or something.
“The fuck did you say?”
“You heard me. You treat your daemon terribly, and from that anyone can tell that you'd be an awful partner. Your poor soulmate, having to put up with an asshole like you.” she says, her voice somewhere between scathing and pity.
“Yeah, she's not wrong dude. You’re an asshole, and honestly none of us can understand how you’re even deserving of having one. It's not like whoever they are is gonna love someone like you.” Another guy pipes up, with a ferret daemon draped across his shoulders. Katsuki moves to respond, most likely with some sort of profanity filled rebuttal, but it was not meant to be.
Missy jumps forward, barking and snarling at the other students. Her ears were forward and teeth flashing. The students recoiled in fear, and made a mad dash into the classroom. One bystander went in the other direction, most likely to tell a teacher. Katsuki just leans down and strokes her head, effectively calming her down. She turns back towards him and gives him a goofy grin, tongue peeking out between her teeth.
**
At the end of the day he got a suspension for ‘Poor Attitude’ and ‘Inability to Control Daemon’. But when Mitsuki went to lecture him, she paused. She just took in the scene of her son and his daemon napping together on the couch, and the slight smile painted across her sons face
-
When Katsuki was rudely awoken at 3:47 pm, on a Sunday, he was rightfully upset.
But when he found out he woke up because of one of his ‘not friends’ calling him? He was pissed.
“What the FUCK do you want?!” he snarled, voice rough and speech slurred from sleep.
“Well good afternoon to you too babes. I just wanted to let you know that me and Tenya are going to that place you recommended. But since you’re so grumpy I guess I’ll leave you be, unless you wanna talk about it?” Camie asks, her voice shrill through the cruddy speakers on the phone.
“No what the fuck? What makes you think I need that shit?” He barks, his angry demeanor waking up his daemon in the other room.
“Well you never take naps, for one. You always go on about how napping in general messes up your precious sleep schedule.” She points out, “That and you got defensive, which is a telltale sign for you.” Katsuki just grimaces.
“Ok, maybe I’ve been stressing about something but it’s none of your business ok. Fuck off about it.” He admits, plopping himself down on the couch, and covering his face with his free hand.
“Just spill babes, you don't do well with keeping your emotions in anyways. And despite being the most social person you know, I’m probably the last person to spill your secrets like that.”
“I don't believe that for a second.” Katsuki laughs loudly.
“It's true fam. Tenya is all about cautionary tales, but he’s a little unaware of what comes out of his mouth yanno? It's ok though I still love him. Ochacko would just tell Midoriya, and I know you would lose your shit if that happened. And Todoroki is also off the board here because you despise getting along with him for some reason.” she rationalizes,
“First off, fuck you! Secondly fuck you I don't have to talk about shit, especially to that damn peppermint looking bastard.” Katsuki rages. His continued noises startle his daemon up from her nap, and led her to him. She pads her way forward and plops her face down to rest on his thigh. His eyes dart downward and his hand naturally reaches for her, and runs his fingers through the fur behind her ears.
“Yeah, yeah, heard it all before. Spill. Now.” Camie demands, most likely rolling her eyes.
“Fine. Only because I’ve got nothing better to do.” He spits, before sighing. “My daemon, She’s… had a big effect on my life… Everyone knows that, obviously. I'm not as angry as I used to be, and all that shit. But even after all that… it's hard to tell if I’m worth it to my supposed soulmate.”
“Kat, babe-”
“I ain't fuckin done yet bitch, shut your mouth. I'm just thinking ok, you wanted to hear my thoughts so shut up and listen. I'm just saying what if he meets me and I’m not like his daemon? What if he gave up his daemon? I don't think you can even do that but that's not the point. It took me so long to come to terms with having a daemon and soulmate, and honestly it's kinda terrifying that after all that he might not even want me.” he pauses. Taking a breath and taking a moment to get under Missy's chin. “And it's not like I'm worried about him holding me back like before. Even if I was still hung up on something like that, Missy’s been with me through some shit. I trust her and by extension my soulmate.” As if Missy heard her name, she jumped up and curled up to get closer. “I just don't know how to handle what might happen if he doesn’t feel the same. I've spent so much time denying my soulmates existence and I guess it's just now hitting me that he might not feel the same.”
“Ok well that’s pretty normal. Most people go through that when it comes to their soulmates and daemons, so it's not unusual. Granted usually this is a middle school crisis for most kids, but you've always been an oddball I suppose.” Camie snickers,
“Fuck you.” Katsuki spits, before hanging up. He looks down to meet his daemons disapproving stare. He rolls his eyes, before reestablishing eye contact with her.
“If you can somehow send a message to my soulmate through your existence or some shit, but if so send him this. You aren't going to hold me back, and I am not ashamed of you. So hurry up and get in my life already shithead.” He mutters, holding his demon's face. In response she licks his cheek, before turning her head out of his grasp to curl up and sleep. Katsuki sighs, before picking up his daemon and carrying her back into his room to continue his nap in peace.
