“Man I love amongus,” I said on Halloween. A group of us from the Discord that knew each other in real life gathered at our friend Xanthe’s house for a sleepover. Juliana was there too. “Hey y’all, I have an Instagram group chat of robotics friends. Can I send them the link?” Juliana asked all of us.
“Sure, why not?” I replied.
A few minutes later, the notable Discord ping blasts from all our phones. The screen lit up with a notification that someone named Ehqdein joined the “where” Discord server.
“That’s my friend Aidan,” Juliana added. “He’s on a Canadian robotics team.”
Despite most of us being present at Xanthe’s house, Lili was still in their college dorm because their college forced all the students to quarantine, meaning they couldn’t join us for our Halloween sleepover in tents. Lili sent in the Discord, “who are you?”
“Juul added me,” Ehqdein replied, referring to Juliana’s in-game name on amongus. “From robotics.”
“Yes but who are you?”
“Gamer.”
I knew from this conversation that Ehqdein would fit in well with our group.
Later that night, after returning from asking strangers for candy, we retired to our tents and decided to play amongus. Juliana joined a call on the server as we all hopped on our favorite app. I decided to poke a little bit of fun at Juliana.
“Cyan sus,” I shouted in the middle of my giant bourgeoisie tent.
“WHAT?!” Juliana shrieked, clearly in mental pain.
Ehqdein and everyone else tagged along. Juliana shouted obscenities in the midst of Xanthe’s suburban neighborhood backyard as her cyan crewmate floated across her iPad screen, followed by the phrase, “Cyan was not the impostor. 2 impostors remained.”
Ehqdein and I both laughed as Juliana was visibly pissed at us while being high on Bang. Little did I know this would be first of many times me and him would be laughing together.
