Chapter Text
You start to eat your food, feeling bad that Naruto is just watching. The only thing your eating is onigiri however your tempted to give it to Naruto, even though Kakashi will fail you. You, Sasuke, and Sakura all look up from your food from hearing Naruto's stomach growl.
"This is no big deal! I can go without eating for days! For weeks! Believe it, this is no big deal. No problem..." Naruto says, obviously lying. When your mom passed away, you couldn't eat for 3 weeks. Your doctors at the hospital told you it forever affected your stomach. After about 8 hours, your stomach starts to break down muscles for energy instead, which can permanently affect your metabolism. I know that it won't affect him that much, but he needs to eat.
"Here Naruto, have some." Both Sasuke and Sakura look up from their food once again to see you holding out your onigiri to Naruto. Sakura and Naruto both gasp.
"No y/n, you can't do that. You heard what sensei said." She says while looking around, for Kakashi.
"He needs to eat, okay? The whole goal is to get the bells as a team and we can't do that if one of our team members is starving. Besides, if you don't eat it could permanently affect your metabolism. So just eat, ok?" you say nicely. The three of them are three shocked. You've never used that nice tone before. You almost sounded like a mother.
"Metabo-what?!" Naruto says.
"Oh my god, just eat ok?!" you say in annoyance, not in the mood to have to explain the human body to Naruto.
"But I-" Naruto starts to object, but is suddenly interrupted.
"Y/n is right. We need to get those bells as a team. If Naruto's hungry, he'll be weak and inefficient. That hurts the team and jeopardizes the mission." You give a small smile to Sasuke, happy to have someone agree with you. You hold up your rice ball to Naruto's mouth as blushes. He takes a bite and his eyes widen.
"Woah! This is so good!" Naruto yells with a smile on his face.
"You're probably only saying that because you haven't eaten in 14 hours," you say while rolling your eyes.
"Wait! But this is your lunch! You need to eat too!" Naruto yells.
"Stop asking questions before I change my mind." You say in a serious tone. This has Naruto nodding, not wanting to argue anymore as he eats your food. Sakura also offers some of her food, saying that she's ' on a diet '.
Suddenly gusts of wind start circling in front of you all. Kakashi Sensei comes through the wind. "You!" He points at all of us with his eyes wide. "You broke the rules. I hope you're ready for the punishment." He starts doing hand signs, which makes you brace for the worst. Your eyes are tightly screwed shut, ducking your head into your chest while covering your head with your arms. "Any last words?" He asks.
Sasuke grunts as you and Sakura both shield each other, sitting closely for comfort as Naruto starts to stutters, brave enough to answer the question. "Bu-but you said- You said that there were four of us! That's what you said! And that's why Sakura and y/n..."
Sasuke finishes Naruto's sentence, "We're all on this squad and we're all in this together."
"Yeah, that's right! We gave our lunch to him because the 4 of us are one!" Sakura yells out, now having enough confidence to stand up to our sensei.
"Please don't blame them Kakashi Sensei! I was my idea!" You yell, taking the blame for everyone. You didn't want them to get in trouble for something you started. It would be unfair.
"Y/n no!" Naruto yells, "If we go down, we go down together! Believe it!"
Kakashi takes a few steps forward, his hands still in a position to send out an attack. "The four of you are one?' that's your excuse?"
Kakashi leans down, sitting on his heels with his hands on his knees getting right in our faces. You move in front of Naruto, protecting him since he's still tied up, while Sakura and Sasuke get into fighting stances.
Suddenly, his whole demeanor changes. He gives another closed-eyed smile through his mask.
"Hm. You pass," he says in the lightest tone you've heard from him. But you don't fully register until you hear Sakura and Naruto mutter out 'Huh?'
"You pass," Kakashi Sensei repeats.
"What do mean? How did we pass?" Sakura questions. You would've asked that question, but you're too speechless to move. The grey clouds that formed are now dispersing, showing the bright sun.
"You are the first squad that ever succeed. The others did exactly what I said and fell into every trap," Kakashi explains. "They couldn't think for themselves. 'A ninja must see through the deception.' In the Ninja world, those who would break the rules are scum, that's true. But, those who abandoned their friends are worst than scum."
Sakura lets out a sigh of relief as Sasuke hums in satisfaction with a small smile. You are still stuck in shock, standing there with your mouth open and eyes wide. That is until you hear whimpers from behind you. When you turn around, you see Naruto with teary eyes.
"He's a- You know he's kinda cool," Naruto says shakily. This makes you instantly laugh, finally returning from your state of shock.
"The exercise is over," Kakashi says calmly. "Everyone passes. Squad 7 starts its first mission tomorrow," he says firmly, giving us all a thumbs up.
"Yes!" Sakura yells. As you hear Naruto yell out phrases like 'I did it and 'Believe it!' and 'I'm a Ninja!!'.
"Let's go home." Kakashi Sensei says. You begin walking with Sasuke and Sakura behind your new sensei, only to hear yelling from behind you.
"I knew they'd do this! Guys! You guys forgot to untie me!" Naruto yells. However, you just stifle your laughter pretending not to hear him, and start to make your way home.
You open your front door, coming home from another day of useless missions. Naruto always complains to Kakashi Sensei about it and you're starting to agree. You want a real mission. You want to fight bad guys and save people. It's been about 2 weeks since you got accepted into Team 7. You've been doing simple missions- well, you can barely call the missions. The most exciting thing you and your team do is chase around the missing cats and tend to gardens.
Your step-dad has still been acting weird ever since that day. He's been asking weird questions like, 'Do you trust me?' which the obvious response you had was 'yes. why?' because as much as you don't like the guy, you still trust him. Your mom had always trusted him so there was no reason not to. Another weird question he asked was How come you're always out and never home?' had you getting kind of pissed off. Like, sorry Hiroji, I'm trying to become a Ninja, can't really play checkers with you today. You try to shove away all your questions and concerns into the back of your mind, but you can't help the nervous feeling in your stomach every time you think about it.
You take off your shoes and start to slowly open the door, only to hear Hiroji's voice calling out to you. You sigh and lazily walk towards the kitchen.
"Hey, how were your missions today?" He asks while stirring something in a pot on the stove.
"Um, they were fine. Nothing big happened." You say giving little to no detail, just wanting to back upstairs to your room.
"Good, good. Here, take a seat. You probably haven't had anything to eat since the morning. You always skip lunch." He says, playfully scolding you. You chuckle while taking a seat at your dining table. You don't speak up he sets your plate down in front of you, then one for himself while taking a seat.
"Thank you for the food." You both say in unison. The food was alright. Not bad, but not good. He was right though; you haven't eaten and you were hungry, so you ate it anyway.
After eating, you got up, making Hiroji look up from his plate. "I'm tired, I'm gonna go to my ro-"
"No, Stay," he says smiling while grabbing your arm. "I feel like I haven't gotten a good chance to talk to you in a while."
You reluctantly sit back down, however, he still doesn't let go of your arm. You think nothing of it and just look at him with tired eyes showing him that your listening.
"Okay, what did you want to talk about?" You ask.
"Nothing in particular. I just miss you." He says while looking into your eyes. The silence the follows is deafening. You avoid his eye contact, but he continues to look at you. His hand, still on your arm, start to move along your arm, rubbing softly. His nails run against your skin, feeling good yet you can't help but feel unsettled. You take your arm away and get up from your seat, taking your dish and putting it in the sink.
"Sorry, Hiroji I'm really tired. We can talk more tomorrow though, okay?" you say about to leave the kitchen, hoping he will finally let you leave.
"Yeah, sounds good. Goodnight, sweetheart," he says, eyeing your figure. You nod and make your way upstairs, but you can't help but feel his burning stare on your body. Once you get to your room, you release a shaky breath you didn't know you were holding. Why is he acting so weird? he has never touched your arm like that. Almost, sensually. Also, sweetheart. He's never called you that before. It had to you fidgeting with your hands as you denied any questions you had. It was better not to think about it anyway.
You tried to go to sleep that night, but instead, you were just tossing around in your bed. Maybe I should sneak out? It would be good to get some more training in. You sit up in your bed and put on the clothes you usually wear when you train. You get your ninja gear and knives and slowly start to open your bedroom window. You get on the tree branch right outside your window and close the window barely making a sound. You jump down from your branch and start to make your way through town. There were very few people out, with the street lights still on. You can't help but walk faster through town. However, as soon as you start to see the entrance of the training grounds, you are tapped on the shoulder. You slowly turn around, hands shaking.
"Hey y/n."
Oh, thank god. It just Kakashi Sensei. Wait, what?
"Geez Kakashi Sensei, you scared me." You say trying to calm down your heart rate.
"Yeah well, you scared me seeing you out this late. It's almost midnight, what are you doing out?" He asks with his hands on his hips, looking like a parent.
"I was just gonna train for a bit, that's all." You say, putting your hands up in a defensive stance.
"You realize that there are no lights in the woods right?" Kakashi asks with an eyebrow raised. Oh yeah, right. Kakashi sees your face deflate and chuckles at you.
"Okay, well, what are you doing out this late?" You say in an accusing tone, embarrassed you hadn't thought of that before.
"Just finished last-minute paperwork for your missions. I was heading home. You shouldn't be out this late." He says firmly.
"I couldn't sleep." You say.
"Does your stepdad know you're out?" he says, letting out too much information.
"Huh? How did you know I have a stepdad?" you ask confused.
"Oh. Whoops," he scratches the back of his neck. "Look that doesn't matter just answer the question."
"Fine okay. No, he doesn't." You say, reminding yourself to ask Kakashi about his slip-up later.
"C'mon, let me walk you home," he says, asking you to lead the way to your house, which you reluctantly do.
As you both are walking, he pulls out a book. He often reads while we're doing our missions.
"Hey, Kakashi Sensei?"
"Yeah?"
"Why are always reading? and what are you reading?" you ask with your head tilted up at him.
"I read because I like to read. And I'm reading a book," he responds, stating the obvious.
"No, I had no idea." You say sarcastically, which has him smiling a little behind his mask even though you can't see it because of the dark. "I mean what's that book even about? It must be good if you read it all the time."
"It's about whatever you want it to be about." He says, which makes no sense. You try grabbing the book, but he ends up moving it just before you can get it. "Nice try, y/n."
"I'm gonna buy the book myself and read it. Then I'll give you my thoughts. Like our own little book club." You say.
"Y/n, this is an adult book. Real Literature. You won't understand a thing if end up reading it."
"You're gonna eat your words once I show up with it in my hands. Maybe we could even read it together," you suggest, with a smirk.
"Yeah no. Absolutely not." Kakashi says seriously. Before you can continue, you reach your house. "Well if you need anything, just knock on my door. My apartments right there ok?" he says, pointing at a house along your street. You had no idea you lived so close to him. Since he's always late you never see him leave his house and he alwasy stays later to talk with the Hokage.
"Oh, sure. Thank you. Goodnight, Sensei!" you say while climbing up your tree and opening your window.
"Goodnight y/n." He waves while walking past your house as you enter your room and shut your window closed. You find yourself smiling contently as you head to bed that night. Even though all you did was talk to Kakashi, it was still nice to see him outside of Ninja Training. Training with Kakashi sounds fun too. Having someone to train with the hand your heart bursting with joy, even though you haven't even asked him yet. You fall asleep while thinking about how good it would feel to spar against Kakashi and win.
Maybe this isn't gonna be as bad as you thought.
