Sin for Something

Chapter 2: Back in Black

Summary:

The Sins are topside

Chapter Text

Japan was nothing like what she remembered. Logically speaking, Gluttony knows that it has been several centuries since the last time she visited; a lot can change in that time, but knowing and seeing are two very different things. The technological advances alone are enough to make her salivate, but there’s also the strange beings. She’s passed several creatures, humans she believes, but they look nothing like what she's ever encountered before. It makes her itch to grab a history book, or anatomy book; anything to satisfy her hunger for knowledge. She’s heard that recently humans have received somewhat supernatural abilities of their own, quirks as they call them, but are these examples of that? How similar are human powers to their own demonic abilities?

She’s brought out of her musing by Envy knocking her upside the head. “We’re almost there Glut,” he says. She looks up and sees it. The gigantic building cuts quite an imposing figure on the horizon; the glass windows reflect the sky and create a stunning mural of clouds.

Their plan was simple. Enter UA University to become ‘Pro Heroes,’ since apparently there was a profession now for beating up bad people, use UA and other pro heroes as resources to track down All For One, kill All For One, and then live out the rest of their ‘mortal’ lives on Earth before inevitable returning to Hell.

Lucifer’s parting warning kept ringing in her ears. Try to keep things subtle, believe me when I say neither of us want my brothers to be poking their noses into this. Just try to blend in and fly under the radar. Unfortunately, they were still stuck on step one, and her own brothers wouldn’t know subtlety if it smacked them in the face.

“Remind me again why we don't just track this douchebag down and kill him ourselves?” came the scornful remark from Pride, proving her point.

“Because,” Greed said, exasperation leaking from her voice,  “we actually get a chance at life right now, so would you rather be on the run from the law your whole life for murder, or  would you rather live a comfortable life, rolling in cash,” Greed said, rubbing her fingers together to accentuate her point and ending the conversation.

After some simple detective work from Wrath, they were able to find out about the UA Entrance Exam and all it entitles. A timed test, consisting of Math, Science, History, and Japanese, and also a ‘practical exam’. They weren’t able to dig up much information on it, but they figured they could wing it.

Which brings them to today, walking through the concrete wall and towards the glistening building of UA University. They must look like quite the motley crew, seven people not wearing school uniforms, but they’d be sure to leave an impression during the tests.

“Okay, between the two hero classes, there are 40 seats. Four of those are reserved for recommended students, leaving only 36. If we all get in, we’d account for roughly 17.5 percent of the total freshmen heroics classes.” Wrath began muttering chances of getting in together before Pride clamped a hand on his shoulder, letting off several small explosions. They weren’t able to do any damage, but it did get Wrath to stop talking for a moment. The subsequent glare from Wrath was enough to make Pride let go of him; the slight flecks of red leaking into Wrath's emerald eyes were enough of a warning.

“Shut up, you stupid nerd, and just focus on the tests. There’s no way we all don’t get in…,” Pride said, his eyes not quite meeting Wrath’s.  Wow, that was probably the nicest thing she’s ever heard Pride say. “Except I’m obviously going to get the highest score,” he said, with his chin held high. There it is, the asshole she knows and coexists with.

Thankfully, they get to the front doors without any more incidents. Once inside, Lust starts winking at everyone, although the fact that Sloth is resting his head on her shoulder probably isn't helping her chances. They receive directions from a teacher who somehow looks more done with life than Sloth usually does, and wind up inside a classroom filling out information packets. It asks for things like: name, age, quirk, etc.  They all have names off course, it's just easier and more fun to use their sins. She has to fudge her age a little, not that they’d believe her if she told the truth. Finally, it may not be her ‘quirk’ but it’s close enough to pass as one.

After she’s done filling out the remaining information, she waits for the teacher to pick them up and explain the exam. She can’t wait for the chance to test her knowledge, and potentially find more things to learn about while back on Earth.

Pride finishes first, because of course he does. Sloth catches the smirk that Pride throws back at the rest of the classroom before he heads to the waiting room. It’s not that Sloth is slow, he just prefers to take his time and triple check every answer. Anxiety can be such a bitch. Eventually, it’s just him and a few other examinees before the buzzer goes off. Satisfied with his work, he turns his work in and heads out to join the others. There’s supposed to be a lunch break between the written and practical exam, so hopefully if he's fast enough he can nap for a few blissful minutes.

He spots the others seated at a nearby table and makes his way over. Pride is leaning back with his hands on his head, while Wrath, Gluttony, and Lust are animatedly discussing their answers; Greed appears to be messing with a nearby vending machine, and Envy is nowhere to be seen. Sloth collapses into a seat just as the conversation is reaching a climax.

“I’m telling you, World War III had to have been caused by a military build-up from tyrannical rulers,” Wrath hissed. “The other options were way too ambiguous.”

“But wouldn’t a decline of essential resources make much more sense to provoke a war considering the lack of gasoline cars we’ve seen,” Gluttony countered.

“That could also be due to environmental causes,” Lust added. From there it devolved into endless bickering from all parties involved.

“They’ve been arguing like this for the past 15 minutes,” Pride sighed. It makes it sound like he actually knew the answer, but sloth knows he's just as clueless, just unlikely to admit his idea for fear of being wrong.

A hum is the only response Pride gets. Sloth rests his head into the crook of his arm laying on the table. “Wake me once the food is here,” he said, his words slightly muffled.

“Can do, half-n-half,” he faintly hears as he drifts off.

He is awoken to the smell of cold soba a short time later. God, he loves his siblings. After scarfing down several bowls, he’s able to regain some of his energy. He looks around, and is happy to see he’s not the only one who indulged; Wrath and Gluttony have several plates stacked in front of them. Envy came back at some point and had his fair share as well.

Soon enough, they are whisked away and stuffed into a giant auditorium and each given a letter card. A man with way too much hair gel walks on stage and begins explaining the practical exam, making Sloth flinch every time his voice peaks. All they were going to do was fight some robots to rack up points, which seemed easy enough.

He could practically see the gears turning in Greed’s head as she tried to calculate how much all this must have cost. Wrath wasn’t helping either, as he was muttering different strategies for neutralizing the faux villains.

In the middle of the lecture, a blue haired boy gets up and starts demanding answers. “Excuse me, but this pamphlet clearly shows four enemies, not three like you stated. If this is a mistake on behalf of UA, it is incredibly unbecoming for this prestigious academy,” he said. “And you!” Whirling around, he points straight at Wrath, “Quit your muttering, you are bothering the students around you! If you think this is some game, then you should leave!” The boy shouts.

The air surrounding them begins to feel thick, and it makes it difficult for Sloth to breathe. He can’t say he’s immune to this feeling, but he’s felt it enough before that he knows how to ignore the chills crawling up his spine. The blue haired boy reels back, feeling the full force of Wrath’s unsettling gaze. Red begins to emerge in Wrath’s irises and meld with emerald green.  “Sorry,” Wrath says after a brief pause, “I’ll refrain.” Gradually, the crimson disappears from his eyes, and with it the tense atmosphere. The entire auditorium releases a breathe they didn't realize they were holding.

Once he’s reigned the kids in again, the teacher goes on to explain that the forth robot is worth no points and acts more like an obstacle to be avoided. Afterwards, everyone does some bizarre chant before heading to the buses. Sloth looks down at his information card and sees he needs to be at Exam Site C.

He boards the correct bus after double checking and looks over his fellow examinees. Sadly, none of his siblings are with him, but hopefully that means there will be less people hogging all the points at his exam site. He leans against the bus window, eyelids growing heavy as the bus begins to move. Someone will wake him up when they get there... probably.

Envy’s heart rate gradually increases the farther up he stares at the humongous walls surrounding the equally large ‘mock city’. He briefly wonders how much money these people have before his nerves rear their ugly head again. He should leave those thoughts to Greed, he has more pressing matters. His time in the bathroom during lunch was a nice reprieve, but it was only that, a reprieve. Once again his insecurities are whispering into his ear how powerless he truly is.

Before the voices can reach him, Lust offers a distraction. “So Neito, think you’re ready?”

And the voices come back louder than ever. They had decided to use their real names in public, but oh, how he despises his name. Neito the copycat and Neito-Who-Can’t-Do Anything-Without-Help and other names begin to roll around in his head. He hates the feeling of powerlessness that comes with his ability. The need to lean on others to even make use of his power. He would get his chance though. He’d show them all that he’s not the weak thing they think he is, and this mission would be the perfect opportunity. After a little experimentation, he discovered he was able to copy the human’s abilities as well. He just needed to be patient and everything would fall into place.

He puts on his best façade and tries to silence the voices in his head; it never works, not completely. “As ready as I’ll ever be. I managed to snag Izuku’s and Katsuki’s abilities,” he says, letting off small explosions in his palm.

“Oh, so my power isn’t good enough,” Lust snapped, detaching her hand and flicking Envy’s forehead in feigned anger.

“You know it’s not like that Set, I just don’t have the fine control that you and Momo are able to achieve,” he said, rubbing his forehead.

“I know, just teasing,” she replies in a cheeky tone. “I heard Ochako and Katsuki are sharing an exam site. How big of a pissing contest do you think it will devolve into?” she asks, genuine curiosity in her voice.

“Depends on how much money is on the line,” Envy muttered as the door on top of a nearby building opened. A man carrying a microphone steps onto a nearby platform as the towering doors to the fake city open up.

“Get ready!”

Envy once again focuses on how fast his heart is beating. He reaches down and pulls on Wrath’s ability, ready for a mad dash into the concrete jungle.

“GO!” The man shouts and Envy charges.
