Chapter Text

A year later and much had changed between the two of them. While they still looked the same, they had gotten closer. Much closer. And by that, Yahaba means that Kyoutani had asked him out using the cheesiest pick up line ever.

“Hey Yahaba.”

“Hm?” Yahaba hummed. The two of them were watching TV in some random person’s house while they were at work during the day. Teddy and Gurtrude were at their feet, acting like guard dogs in case the stranger decided to come home early that day.

The two of them had spent half an hour bickering over what show to watch, but eventually, Kyoutani relented and let Yahaba pick. Halfway through the first episode of Steven Universe, Yahaba let his head drop onto Kyoutani’s shoulder. He had tensed up, but quickly relaxed and leaned back into Yahaba’s side. A good sign.

And now they were here. Where Kyoutani was looking slightly fidgety, and Yahaba was extremely curious.

“Would you- do you-” He stopped. Yahaba raised his brow as Kyoutani took a deep breath before shifting slightly to face Yahaba more. “My aura may be red, but it shows my passion for you. I like you, please go out with me.”

Crickets.

And then Yahaba burst out laughing. He didn’t mean too, but that was possibly the worst pick up line he had ever heard. He peeked open one eye to see Kyoutani pouting with a red face and his arms crossed over his chest.

Once Yahaba managed to calm down, he reached over and cupped his hands around Kyoutani’s face. “I like you too, it's just that it was a terrible pick up line. Cute, but terrible.”

Kyoutani huffed and agreed that it was a pretty bad line, but it was the only one he could think of at the time. Yahaba chuckled and rested his head on Kyoutani’s shoulder. He gave Kyoutani a little kiss under his jaw and watched in amusement as his blush got 10 times redder.

One night, they were walking home hand in hand. Yahaba was rubbing his thumb over Kyoutani’s knuckles when he spotted a dog sitting in the alley outside of a popular restaurant. He let go of Kyoutani’s hand and rushed over, leaving the other very confused.

He slowly approached the dog, lifting his arm to present his hand as it was scared and shaking. Slowly, the dog sniffed his hand, and once Yahaba was deemed safe, the dog moved forward, coming out from the darkness of the alley. As more of the dog became visible, Yahaba noticed its yellow aura.

Kyoutani had appeared behind him at some point, and watched as Yahaba gained this dog’s trust. He crouched down and lifted his hand for the dog as well, and smiled when the dog got closer to them.

It took a bit of convincing with kind words, but the two of them were able to get the dog to go with them. They took the dog home, back to their apartment of 6 other dogs. When the new dog saw the other pups, it quickly opened up. All the dogs started to play with one another, introducing the new dog to their toys and beds and blankets.

Yahaba and Kyoutani were sitting on the couch, watching the dogs interact. Yahaba quietly hummed and leaned against Kyoutani.

“I got a name,” Yahba suddenly said.

“Hm?” Kyoutani grunted, very entranced by the way Teddy and Spike were play fighting over a rope toy.

“How about Lucky? Lucky number 7.” He had thought about it for a bit. 7 was one of his lucky numbers, and as this was the 7 dog in their little family, he just felt like it fit.

Kyoutani snorted. “Really? Isn’t that a little cheesy?”

“Hush, you like cheese,” Yahaba huffed as he shoved Kyoutani’s shoulder lightly.

They sat in silence for a bit after that. Just the two of them, staring at the stars as music played from one of their neighbors speakers. It's nice. Calm.

“Thanks for picking me up back then,” Yahaba said. “I'm glad I went with you, even if you were scary looking.”

Kyoutani ruffled Yahaba’s hair roughly, yet fondly. Yahba couldn't help the laugh that bubbled out of him. He shoved Kyoutani’s hand out of his and they settled back down. Kyoutani kissed the top of Yahaba’s head and he hummed in contentment. Snuggling closer into his side, Yahba felt at home.

He felt happy.

So, so happy.
