Chapter Text

The flight from Seoul to Jeju takes just over an hour and Kihyun has slept through the most part. They’re taking the Saturday morning flight since the wedding starts in the late afternoon, but Kihyun immediately dozes off the moment the plane takes off. He didn’t get enough rest because of the workload dumped on him two days ago.

His managerial position isn’t any easier even though it’s been six months. Kihyun has always been work efficient even as new responsibilities are piled on him. As a manager, he has to oversee a group of employees and evaluate their reports as well. This means having to interact with more people, which is a challenge itself as Kihyun has to make sure he doesn’t mix up anyone’s names or faces. However, being manager has its benefits too, and Kihyun has utilised his authority appropriately by setting a mandatory requirement that everyone wears their staff ID in a lanyard during work hours. At least Kihyun doesn’t have to take up too much time finding social cues or going through his notes about each employer now.

Minhyuk has suggested that Kihyun tell them about his condition so they can accommodate him better at work, but there’s also the concern that he might be deemed unfit for the position. Kihyun has worked hard for years to get to where he is and deserves the promotion more than anyone else, so he definitely can’t risk that. Still, it frustrates Minhyuk seeing Kihyun having to take on more weight at work because of this, and wishes the universe was kinder to Kihyun. Minhyuk wishes that he could turn back time and stop the accident, or even take Kihyun’s place and get the head injury instead, since he had nothing to lose. So Kihyun could fly high and reach for the stars without the challenges of prosopagnosia.

But when Minhyuk expressed this to Kihyun last night (Kihyun slept over at Minhyuk’s place so they could be on time for the next day. Hyungwon sent them to the airport, wearing a smug expression the whole ride), he received an angry smack on the arm and a shove towards the other end of the couch.

“Don’t ever say that. Even if I could turn back time, I’d do it all over again.”

“But your dream, you could have been a singer---”

Another smack, but softer this time as Kihyun moved closer to Minhyuk who was half sprawled on the couch by the hard shove. But there was a fire in Kihyun’s eyes, burning but without the searing pain. It was evident what Minhyuk had said really irked him. “We wouldn’t be able to meet, you idiot. So what if I became a singer? My life would still be dull if you’re not in it, you would only know me as a celebrity and not as an ordinary person. And I don’t want that, would you want that? Is that what you want?”

Minhyuk gulped, suddenly realising that Kihyun was half hovering above him with a hand pressed into the armrest of the couch just beside Minhyuk’s head. He’d never seen Kihyun this riled up, Minhyuk felt like running for the hills but the flames in Kihyun’s eyes were bright and beautiful, burning with a purpose that Minhyuk couldn't ignore. It was like Minhyuk was looking at the sun, but it didn’t hurt. “N-No, of course not!”

“So shut up and don’t ever say you’d take my place because,” Kihyun paused, the forest flames extinguishing only to be replaced with the soothing light of a candle as he kneeled on the cushion next to Minhyuk, pulling him up so their faces were level, “you have your own place in this world. Fuck the universe for fucking us up but at least we met each other through this chaos. I still wouldn’t change anything even if I knew it would get me to where I am now.”

Words disintegrated on Minhyuk’s tongue as his heart caught fire at the intensity of Kihyun’s gaze and fierce sincerity in those words, giving him no ability to speak and leaving him to dazedly stare at Kihyun who’s merely centimetres apart. Kihyun was so close, the closest he had ever been in terms of physical distance.

Blood rushed up Minhyuk’s face and he swore Kihyun’s eyes flitted down to his lips for a second. Or maybe Minhyuk was just dreaming as usual, dreaming of obliterating the distance between them so they could just collide without fear of the unknown, dreaming of kissing Kihyun without having to worry about the consequences.

Minhyuk remembered chanting in his head: Please tell me I’m dreaming.

But the electrifying touch of Kihyun’s hand against Minhyuk’s cheek was a reminder that he was in reality, and Kihyun was waiting for an answer.

I wouldn’t change a thing either,” Minhyuk finally said once he found his voice again. “I’d rather be lost all over again before meeting you, so that you can find me.”

Kihyun’s eyes sparkled with starlight and time didn’t just slow to a crawl, it completely stopped as if the world had let go. And then he was another centimetre closer, or maybe Minhyuk was just imagining things again.

“Please don’t tell me that I’m dreaming,” Kihyun whispered, his breath kissing Minhyuk’s cheeks.

He wasn’t dreaming. For a split second, Minhyuk considered leaning in, so he could be selfish for once. The universe didn’t put Kihyun just a few centimetres away to deprive Minhyuk of his lips, did it?

But time moved again when a shrill ringtone pierced through the atmosphere, and whatever moment they were suspended in became nothing but a popped bubble. Minhyuk moved away to answer his phone while Kihyun practically scrambled to the kitchen for a glass of water.

Perhaps Minhyuk had to thank (or curse) Hyungwon for calling him and preventing more chaos in the universe.

Back to the present, Minhyuk blinks away the strange events of last night and flips to the next page of Kihyun’s scrapbook, memorising names and faces of Kihyun’s relatives while the man himself slumbers away with his head on Minhyuk’s shoulder.

At least things aren’t awkward between them, or maybe Kihyun is just pretending that nothing happened last night. Because really, nothing happened except for the fact that Minhyuk’s feelings are already spilling over the edges and he can’t quite look Kihyun in the eye without giving too much away.

But Minhyuk isn’t the only one feeling restless because Kihyun seems to be having trouble sleeping in peace. His hand fists the material of Minhyuk’s sleeve, frantic movement behind his eyelids as his mouth moves soundlessly. Minhyuk puts the scrapbook away, removes Kihyun’s grip on his sleeve to hold Kihyun’s hand, and strokes his skin in hopes to ease the tension in his body. It breaks Minhyuk’s heart seeing that Kihyun can’t even rest in his sleep when he’s already busy at work.

Minhyuk wonders what Kihyun’s dreams are like. Kihyun told him that he also can’t recognise faces in his dreams. So even if there was someone in Kihyun’s dreams as a friend or foe, he wouldn’t be able to know. But that doesn't mean he wakes up unbothered.

Minhyuk observes Kihyun’s face and finds himself frowning when Kihyun’s eyebrows knit together, then his hand is tightening around Minhyuk’s as he mumbles something incoherent. Acting on instinct, Minhyuk’s other hand comes up to stroke Kihyun’s cheek, anything to calm Kihyun down from a restless dream.

Then there’s the familiar ding that resonates through the cabin before an air stewardess makes an announcement through the speakers. They’ll be landing in Jeju International Airport in ten minutes. The seatbelt signs light up and seats are adjusted back to their upright position. Kihyun’s eyes fly open and he jolts in his seat, lifting his head off Minhyuk’s shoulder but still gripping onto his hand.

Kihyun’s chest heaves slightly and he looks around in a daze, as if he’s trying to grasp his surroundings. He then turns to Minhyuk, eyes bleary with sleep yet alert and confused as he frantically searches Minhyuk’s face.

Minhyuk puts a hand on Kihyun’s shoulder. “Hey, you’re okay. It’s me, Minhyuk. You were having a dream. We’re reaching the island soon.”

Kihyun blinks back rapidly at Minhyuk as he tries to even out his breathing, lips slightly parted. Then he looks down at their joined hands when Minhyuk rubs reassuring circles on his knuckles, and visibly relaxes.

He looks back up at Minhyuk with an unreadable expression on his face. Minhyuk’s heart drops but he repeats himself. “I’m Minhyuk. You’re awake and safe, Kihyun.”

“I know, I just…” Kihyun trails off, eyes exploring every inch of Minhyuk’s face, but he’s not frowning anymore, the tension leaving his body as he squeezes Minhyuk’s hand. “...yeah, you’re Minhyuk.”

Kihyun’s voice is hoarse, stretched thin like a rubber band and Minhyuk fears he might just break, because the look in Kihyun’s eyes is melting into something else, like vulnerability.

The dream must have rattled him badly, and Minhyuk waits for Kihyun’s breathing to fall back to its normal pace so he can tell Minhyuk what’s troubling him in his sleep. So Minhyuk can take some misery away. He can hold onto them for Kihyun, it’s not a problem.

But Kihyun doesn’t say anything else and leans back into his seat.

“You okay Ki?”

“I’m okay. It’s just a weird dream. I’m okay, Min.”

Kihyun holds onto Minhyuk’s hand until the plane touches the tarmac and wheels to a stop. An anchor in the sky, a pair of wings on land.

Jeju Island is the largest island in South Korea with thriving tourism and fishing industries. It’s the best place for family trips and honeymooners as the volcanic island is known for its beach resorts and pristine landscapes. Minhyuk has only seen the island through documentaries and movies, but the beauty is on a whole new level when taken in with his own eyes, especially when the scenery is painted with the vibrant colours of spring.

Kihyun is also in awe, his nose pressed against the window as the taxi drives them to the beach resort where the wedding will be held and also where they will be staying for the night. He has the excitement and curiosity of a child, eyes going wide as he takes in the passing view: cherry blossom trees lining both sides of the road while bright yellow canola flowers with blue stalks spread underneath them into a vast carpet of petals, showing them the way to their destination.

Kihyun is more relaxed now that they’re on the island with the scenery and the upcoming events as distractions. The restlessness on the plane has mostly subsided, since holding Minhyuk’s hand has calmed him down significantly. But Minhyuk knows what a facade looks like when he’s worn it too many times.

Minhyuk senses that Kihyun is probably worried about seeing his relatives again after ages, also nervous about singing for the reception, and whatever dream he had is probably still bugging him too. So he plans to ask Kihyun again after they’ve reached the resort and checked into their hotel. They have wedding duties and the last thing Minhyuk wants is Kihyun stressing out when there’s also the stress at work to deal with.

Minhyuk tries to overlook the fact that there’s only one queen-sized bed in the room and places his carry-on against the wall before turning to Kihyun who’s unpacking his clothes for the wedding. They’re supposed to meet Jongdae before the ceremony since Kihyun is family, while Minhyuk will tag along to help Kihyun with the faces. “You okay?”

Kihyun unfolds his suit and lays it on the bed, smoothing down the wrinkles. “Yeah, I’m-” he pauses, feeling Minhyuk’s concerned gaze on him. Kihyun looks up to meet his eyes and the facade cracks at the edges, just enough to show Minhyuk that he’s not really okay. “I’m actually a bit nervous,” Kihyun admits with a sigh, plopping down on the edge of the bed. “I haven’t seen my family in a while, I just...don’t want to see the disappointed looks on their faces again when they realise I still can’t recognise them.”

Kihyun’s parents are already at the resort since they flew in yesterday, however his younger brother couldn’t make it to the wedding because he’s working overseas. His parents probably have met the couple and are currently helping out however they can. Kihyun told Minhyuk that his mother is fond of Jongdae since his father is her closest brother. Kihyun even reckons that his mother likes Jongdae more than her own son, because Jongdae is kind and caring, and could easily greet Kihyun’s mother without having to worry of mistaking her for someone else.

Kihyun always tells Minhyuk that it’s okay, that he knows the love can be felt usually when there’s a distance, that he understands why he can never meet his parents hopes of him waking up one day and able to recognise them again, that he accepts that not every relationship is perfect. But now that Kihyun is about to see his family again, Minhyuk can see the slump in his shoulders and the downcast look in his eyes as he stares down at his hands.

And that’s just not okay. Kihyun’s parents shouldn’t place unrealistic expectations on him, shouldn’t be disappointed at him when he’s always trying his best every single day.

Minhyuk moves to crouch on the floor in front of Kihyun and looks up to meet his eyes, not caring if his own are showing too much for now, not when Kihyun needs reassurance.

“You’re not a disappointment, Kihyun,” Minhyuk says firmly. “No matter what kind of faces they show you, you’re not a disappointment. They are family but only you determine your own worth.”

“I know,” Kihyun sighs, wringing his hands, “I love my family, of course I still do, but their expectations just don’t align with mine. And they’d probably bring up marriage prospects to me again later among other things.” There’s a faraway look in his eyes, holding reminiscence and bittersweetness. “I don’t know if we would just grow estranged, but maybe it’s for the best.”

Minhyuk grabs onto Kihyun’s hands to stop the rubbing and twisting on his skin, fearing it might bruise. “I honestly have no say in your family matters,” Minhyuk starts, running his thumbs over Kihyun’s knuckles in hopes to soothe the redness, “but you should do what’s best for you. I know sometimes family’s opinions matter a lot, but you can’t be happy meeting their expectations when those expectations are not yours--”

“I think you’re more like a real family.”

“--because your happiness matters more than what they think. And I wish they could just understand things from your point of view but---” Minhyuk’s tongue skids to a halt, the rest of his words knocked back down his throat when his ears finally register what Kihyun just uttered. “Wait, what?”

Kihyun suddenly slides off the edge of the mattress and throws his arms around Minhyuk, causing Minhyuk to almost lose his balance as he’s knocked back on his heels. Minhyuk catches hold of Kihyun’s waist while the other arm holds himself upright to regain his balance. Kihyun only buries his head into Minhyuk’s shoulder as Minhyuk shifts to carry both their weight. That’s all he’s ever wanted to do, to share the burden so Kihyun can breathe again, lighten his misery.

“I appreciate you being here for me when my family can’t. You give me the strength to face them again.”

Kihyun’s chest is pressed against Minhyuk’s body, his heart thumping steadily in his ribcage, the motions echoing through Minhyuk’s body like ripples of water, until it feels like Kihyun’s heart is also his own. Two hearts becoming one.

If only Minhyuk can give Kihyun every piece of his heart to seal the cracks and mend the holes, repair the foundations of his castle even if it means the fall of Minhyuk’s own empire.

Minhyuk doesn’t know what to say other than hold onto Kihyun until the man lets go. Kihyun’s cheeks are like cherry blossoms when he pulls away and faces Minhyuk, but the tension in his face is replaced with determination, telling Minhyuk that he’s okay enough to get through the day.

“It’s Jongdae’s special day,” Kihyun says, getting off Minhyuk’s lap and returning to the suit on the bed, “I don’t wanna get family issues into it but,” he holds up the suit and turns back to Minhyuk who’s still stunned and sitting on the floor, his lips lifting into a grateful smile, “I guess I shouldn’t worry about anything since I won’t be alone.”

Perhaps it’s the trick of the light, but the way Kihyun is looking at Minhyuk is a little different than usual. It’s like a warmer duvet on a cold day, like clear water flowing out of the mountains. Like affection, but deeper.

Minhyuk wants to drown in it, and he would again and again even if it’s only possible in his dreams. He tries to swallow the bitterness and only displays the sweetness in his smile. “I won’t leave your side, promise.”

Only Minhyuk knows the promise extends further than just today and has the potential to travel across the universe and back.

For now, he just lets Kihyun pull him off the ground. “Come on, we have to get ready for the wedding.”

The 4pm wedding ceremony is held in an outdoor garden of the resort overlooking the Pacific Ocean. The sea breeze gently ruffles the bride’s veil as she walks down the aisle with her father, looking like a fairy princess with flowers braided into her long hair, her face glowing in the daylight as she smiles at the groom waiting for her at the other end.

Kim Jongdae is as pleasant as Kihyun mentioned, with a down-to-earth charm that draws people to him. He smiled warmly at Minhyuk before the ceremony, and Minhyuk just knows he’s a good person like Kihyun. The handsome groom had welcomed Kihyun with open arms even before Kihyun could attempt to recognise him. He thanked the both of them for flying in and even though he spent most of the time talking to Kihyun, Jongdae would glance at Minhyuk once in a while with a curious look in his eyes. Minhyuk couldn’t help but wonder how much Kihyun had told his cousin about him.

Minhyuk sits beside Kihyun at one of the front rows, who’s sitting next to his family. Luckily, Minhyuk spotted them first when they reached the garden and notified Kihyun. Needless to say, they were surprised to see Kihyun approach them first, and even more surprised to see Minhyuk following their son around. However, they weren’t unkind towards Minhyuk and pleasantries were exchanged without a hitch.

The wedding ceremony is beautiful but Minhyuk can’t pay attention when Kihyun’s right next to him, looking dashing in a two-piece suit with his hair styled to reveal most of his forehead. Jongdae holds the spotlight as the handsome groom on his special day, but Minhyuk is biased and thinks Kihyun is the most gorgeous man in the venue.

Kihyun wears a soft smile as he watches the couple exchange their vows. At one point he leans in to whisper into Minhyuk’s ear, which automatically sends a chill down Minhyuk’s neck when Kihyun’s breath ghosts his skin. “Jongdae didn’t write a script for this, he’s improvising on the spot.”

Minhyuk hasn’t been listening to the vows, but improvisation is definitely impressive. It’s only possible when you love someone so much that words just flow out naturally when you look at them. After all, love can’t be planned. Just like how it isn’t a plan either when Minhyuk instinctively reaches out to squeeze Kihyun’s hand. It only lasts for a second even though no one is looking at them, but it’s enough for Kihyun to stop and stare at Minhyuk in surprise. But then the atmosphere erupts with cheers and applause when the newlyweds seal their union with a kiss, and Kihyun is applauding along with the guests.

The bride and groom are kissing, it’s beautiful and romantic like how weddings are. But all Minhyuk can think of is if he kisses Kihyun, it would still be beautiful and romantic even without the backdrop of a wedding.

Minhyuk’s face is probably as pink as the bouquet of peonies in the bride’s hand. He snaps out of his daydream when there’s a loud pop and confetti rains down on the newly wedded couple as they walk down the aisle together. Minhyuk’s mind is screaming at Hyungwon for planting far-fetched scenarios in his head. There’s no room for flippant thoughts, Minhyuk is here to help Kihyun with faces and make him as comfortable as possible.

So Minhyuk takes a deep breath, adjusts the collar of his shirt and tries not to stumble in the shoes gifted by Hyunwoo as he follows Kihyun out of their seats. The shoes fit but there’s always something about new shoes that feel stiff the first time you wear them. It sometimes takes a thousand, or ten thousand steps before your feet are comfortable in their new armour. Comfortable footwear means confident steps.

Perhaps this is also a reason why Hyunwoo gave Minhyuk the shoes: for Minhyuk to have more confidence in himself.

“I’ll have to step away for family photos,” Kihyun says as the guests leave their seats to mingle around after the ceremony. A photographer is adjusting a camera in front of the flower arch where the newlyweds are gathered with family members, and Jongdae is motioning for Kihyun to join him. Kihyun turns to Minhyuk, eyes set with slight concern. “Can you stay here? I’ll join you later.”

Minhyuk nods and nudges Kihyun towards the group. “Don’t worry, I won’t go anywhere.” It’s quite easy to spot Minhyuk since he’s the only guy wearing a navy pinstripe suit. He’s not wearing a tie and the top button of his shirt is undone, with a silver star brooch pinned to the lapel of his jacket. A little unconventional compared to the rest of the men at the wedding, but Minhyuk isn’t worried about standing out if it means he can easily be spotted by Kihyun.

Perhaps Minhyuk’s semi-formal attire is drawing a bit more attention than he expected, because a bridesmaid has approached him with a flirtatious smile.

“Hey, you must be from the groom’s side,” she says, tucking a stray curl behind her ear.

Minhyuk has no idea who this bridesmaid is, and he’s not interested but doesn’t want to be rude. So he smiles back politely. “I’m with the groom’s cousin”

The bridesmaid follows Minhyuk’s gaze that’s locked on Kihyun who’s now plastering a bright smile next to an equally smiley Jongdae. “Oh, so that’s him,” she notes, sounding a little disinterested before quickly turning back to Minhyuk. “You’re not from around here, are you?” She’s standing closer than Minhyuk would’ve liked, her perfume is too strong it makes his nose sting.

Minhyuk suppresses a sigh. He wishes he could just make an excuse to go to the toilet, but he promised Kihyun he would stay where he is. So Minhyuk stays put and tries to come off as friendly but reserved while answering her questions. He really doesn’t wanna get her hopes up, but she doesn’t seem to take the hint and puts a hand on his elbow, batting her eyelashes at him.

“Say, would you save a dance for me during the reception?”

This is the time to reject her. Minhyuk doesn’t want to dance with her even if Kihyun doesn’t need him in his line of sight. He just wants to dance with Kihyun. “Look, miss---”

“There you are, darling!” A hand rests on Minhyuk’s elbow and he’s turned around to meet Kihyun’s sweet smile. “I’ve been looking for you.”

Minhyuk is confused for a split second, because Kihyun has never called him darling or any other nicknames similar to that. His brain screeches in a flurry of exclamation marks but then he remembers the bridesmaid is still next to him and Kihyun’s eyes are hinting at Minhyuk to play along. Kihyun, always his saviour.

Except that Minhyuk doesn’t have to play along. He quickly recovers from his shock and puts on an affectionate grin. “And here I am, sweetheart,” Minhyuk coos sweetly and loops his arm around Kihyun’s. “Told you I wasn’t going anywhere.”

The bridesmaid blinks at them incredulously, trying to keep her jaw from dropping.

Kihyun then turns to her, keeping the smile on his face, but the sweet aura morphs into something else Minhyuk can’t really decipher. “Oh, you must be the bride’s friend. I see you’ve met my boyfriend.”

The bridesmaid tries to keep her face neutral but she’s still gaping. “Boyfriend…” she mutters awkwardly.

Boyfriend. Minhyuk’s brain shrieks incoherently. It’s a ruse, but still.

“The photographer is asking for the bridesmaids,” Kihyun presses on, still smiling. He’s really good at this whole thing because the bridesmaid immediately steps away with an awkward nod and a forced smile without meeting their eyes. She hurriedly makes her way to the newlyweds, almost tripping on her heels.

Minhyuk lets out a relieved sigh once the bridesmaid is out of earshot. “Thank goodness you came in time.”

“You looked so uncomfortable,” Kihyun laughs and separates their arms, although Minhyuk wishes he doesn’t have to. “After our little stunt, she won’t bother you anymore.”

“Please don’t leave my side again,” Minhyuk half pleads, half teases. “I don’t need more people hitting on me.”

“But how can they not hit on you?” Kihyun gestures up and down at Minhyuk. “I mean, look at you.”

“I know,” Minhyuk sighs dramatically, but then grins at Kihyun. “I’m quite a catch.”

“You sure are.” Kihyun grins back, and they just stand there at the edge of the grass in silence for a while, looking out at the ocean from afar.

“Hey, you haven’t told me what you’re gonna sing at the reception,” Minhyuk says. He can hear the waves if he strains his ears, but it’s hard to with the celebratory atmosphere around them. The guests are either chatting among themselves at the refreshments table or taking more pictures with the wedded couple. The reception will begin at 7pm since the newlyweds plan to take wedding shots during the golden hour.

“Actually…I’ll be singing a song I wrote for them.”

Minhyuk turns to him, mouth open in surprise. “Really? You didn’t tell me that.”

Kihyun shrugs, putting his hands into his pockets. There’s a tint of redness on the tip of his ears. “I wanted it to be a surprise, but since you asked I just couldn’t keep it from you.”

Minhyuk has a surprise for Kihyun too, waiting to be revealed after today’s events. But he doesn’t feel ready at all despite the webtoon still doing well in the charts, it’s Kihyun’s thoughts that matter anyway.

The sun is starting to duck below the clouds but Minhyuk feels warm in his suit and undoes another button. “Nervous about performing?”

Kihyun glances at Minhyuk’s fingers before turning back to the oceanic view, his Adam's apple bobbing up and down. “Uh, yeah.” Kihyun clears his throat and spares another quick glance at Minhyuk. “I mean, I’ll be singing my own song in front of family and strangers, but it’s for Jongdae so I guess it’s worth it even if I embarrass myself.”

“Like I said before, everyone’s gonna like it no matter what you sing. Your parents would be proud too,” Minhyuk says in encouragement, but Kihyun is looking past Minhyuk’s shoulder and his expression hardens a little.

Minhyuk turns around just in time to see Kihyun’s parents approaching them. “Kihyun, we haven’t seen you in ages, you should catch up with us,” Kihyun’s mother says, but she’s looking at Minhyuk, and it’s clear that she doesn’t want him around.

Minhyuk looks at Kihyun cautiously, but he gives Minhyuk a slight nod, as if telling him it’s okay, then steps forward to his parents. Of course, Minhyuk promised to accompany Kihyun but he can’t disrespect his elders and stand in the way of their family talk. So he bows to Kihyun’s parents and steps away to give them space, praying that things won’t become tense between Kihyun and his parents. Minhyuk’s not sure how long they’ll be talking and what kind of conversation it will be.

They remain in Minhyuk’s peripheral vision as he puts more distance between them when Kihyun’s father glances at his direction as if to make sure he’s not eavesdropping. Luckily Minhyuk doesn’t have to stand by himself awkwardly because Jongdae has approached him.

“Hi, Minhyuk,” Jongdae beams, kind as ever with his expressive eyebrows and the soft quirks of his lips, “what are you doing here all by yourself? Do help yourself to some refreshments!”

Minhyuk shakes his head. “I’m fine but thanks.” He glances back at Kihyun and it seems like they’re having a decent conversation since Kihyun has a neutral look on his face, which is a good thing. “It’s just that I promised that I’ll be around Kihyun, if you know what I mean.”

Jongdae follows Minhyuk’s gaze and nods. “You really like my cousin, don’t you?”

Minhyuk turns back to Jongdae, heart in his throat. “Is it that obvious?” The groom has been busy with matrimonials, it only takes profound evidence to come up with this assumption in such a short time.

Jongdae raises a brow in amusement. “Wow, you’re not even denying it.”

“Why bother when you’ve figured out that much?” Minhyuk sighs and offers a weak smile. “I guess this is the part where you square up and threaten to kill me if I ever try anything funny with your cousin.”

Jongdae blinks at him for a second and barks out an incredulous laugh, eyes crinkling and laugh lines showing. “You think I’d be so defensive? Come on now Minhyuk, you’re the best thing that’s ever happened to Kihyun. I trust that he's in good hands. ”

Minhyuk stares at the groom, his heart slowly making its way back into his ribcage. “Um, how can you be certain? You literally just met me--”

“Oh please,” Jongdae waves him off. “I’ve heard enough from him to know about you.” His gaze is warm and filled with gratitude when he places a hand on Minhyuk’s shoulder. “Really, I should be thanking you for helping Ki come out of his shell. He’s quite the loner, had always kept things to himself ever since the accident," Jongdae sighs, eyes glazing over with sadness for a split second, presumably having a flashback of the crash since he was there too. The near fatal collision that changed the course of Kihyun’s life.

"But I’m glad he found someone he can open up to," Jongdae's smile returns, shaking the memory away. "Thank you for staying with him, he would have been so lost on his own.”

“You don’t have to thank me. Kihyun also helped me when I felt lost. He helped me see the bigger picture,” Minhyuk says, gaze automatically returning to Kihyun, “he inspires me to strive for the things that matter, and he matters. I really do care for him.”

“I can see that. That’s why you should go after him.”

Minhyuk blinks. “I’m sorry?”

“My cousin can be pretty dense sometimes,” Jongdae says apologetically, “you probably have to straight up confess to him before he finally gets it.”

“But what if---”

Jongdae firmly claps on Minhyuk’s shoulder twice, offering him an assuring nod. “Just don’t overthink it, yeah?” There's a strange twinkle in his eyes, like he has more to say but is refraining himself.

Before Minhyuk can ask any further, they’re approached by Jongdae’s best man Chanyeol, the tallest man around. “Hey, sorry to interrupt, but the photographer is waiting. It’s the golden hour.”

“Oh, right!” Jongdae gasps when he looks up at the evening sky. “Wow, it’s so beautiful. Then I better get some nice shots with my wife before it’s too late.” Before leaving with Chanyeol, he gently nudges Minhyuk in Kihyun's direction. “Go watch the sunset with Ki, he likes them.”

Minhyuk knows how much Kihyun appreciates the beauty of mother nature. So he turns to look for Kihyun and finds him standing on the same spot, still talking with his parents. But what’s different now is the troubled look on his face, and he’s wringing his hands while his mother says something Minhyuk can’t hear, but it doesn’t look any good.

No, this isn’t how it’s supposed to be.

Minhyuk doesn’t even realise that his feet are already moving him forward until he’s near enough to catch what Kihyun’s mother is saying.

“...guess I shouldn’t have expected so much. Who would want a husband who can’t recognise his own partner anyway?”

Something snaps in Minhyuk when he sees the devastation on Kihyun’s face, the flames growing with every step he takes. This is just too much, he wishes he could yell at her in Kihyun’s behalf. Minhyuk's heart is about to burst with fury, he can only imagine what Kihyun is feeling right now, to be the one taking the direct blow of his own mother’s words. Kihyun doesn’t deserve this.

But they’re in public and it wouldn’t do Kihyun any good if Minhyuk lets anger get the best of him and cause a scene, they’re at a wedding for goodness sake. Minhyuk’s only thought is that he has to get Kihyun away from his parents right now.

Minhyuk takes a deep breath and keeps his expression neutral as he reaches Kihyun’s side, placing his hand on Kihyun’s elbow. “Hey sorry but Chanyeol is looking for you to confirm your song with the DJ,” Minhyuk lies through gritted teeth, trying to keep his voice from shaking with rage. He can’t lose his cool, it’ll only make the situation worse.

Kihyun slightly jumps in surprise, but his eyes aren’t really focused when he looks at Minhyuk, pupils shaking and lips pale. “Huh?”

Minhyuk lightly tugs at Kihyun’s elbow. “Come on, the reception is starting soon and they gotta make sure everything’s confirmed.” Minhyuk turns to Kihyun’s parents, who look slightly irritated by the interruption. “Sorry, but this is urgent.”

Kihyun blinks in confusion but nods when Minhyuk tugs at his elbow again. “Oh, okay. Uh, take me to where he is.”

So Minhyuk leads him away, Kihyun doesn’t even spare a glance at his parents even though Minhyuk sees that he’s fighting to keep it together. Kihyun’s knuckles have gone red from the pressure of rubbing on them too harshly.

They’re a few steps away from Kihyun’s parents when Minhyuk stops. No, he can’t just let them talk to Kihyun like that as if they’re cursing his fate. Kihyun looks up at him questioningly, his eyes widening when Minhyuk turns back to address his parents.

“Just so you know, Mr. and Mrs. Yoo, I don’t mind having a partner who doesn’t recognise my face,” Minhyuk says calmly, fire on ice, “because then I'd know my partner loves me for my heart and not just for my looks. Isn’t this how healthy relationships should be?”

Minhyuk doesn’t wait to see their reactions and grabs Kihyun’s hand, taking him across the lawn and past the guests. Kihyun’s parents’ impressions of him are probably worsening but he doesn’t care. Minhyuk doesn’t regret any of what he said since it’s the truth.

“Minhyuk, wait, where are we going?” Kihyun asks, voice laced with concern and bafflement as they move further away from the venue, but he doesn’t try to pull his hand away.

“Down to the beach. Let’s watch the sunset.”

The clouds are scarce on this spring day, allowing the sun to fully display its radiance as the golden hour looms over them. The waves are loud enough to drown out Minhyuk’s pounding heartbeat as he steps onto the sand, still keeping a firm grip on Kihyun’s hand.

Kihyun has been quiet the whole way down, and when Minhyuk finally turns back to look at him as he lets go of his hand, the words tumble out of Kihyun, bumpy and uneven like the sand beneath their shoes.

“Why did you--I mean, what did you say--no, but how could you--” Kihyun’s breath is ragged as he searches Minhyuk’s face for clarity, chest rising and falling like the capricious tides. “I don’t know what just happened,” Kihyun finally says, completely stunned. He closes his eyes and takes a deep breath before looking up at Minhyuk again, voice softer this time. “What just happened?”

Minhyuk is breathing hard too as he finally registers the weight of his actions, Kihyun will have to face his parents again, and things might get tense again especially after what Minhyuk just did. “I don’t--” Minhyuk shakes his head, trying to gather his thoughts, “I’m sorry. I just couldn’t stand there and do nothing, not when you looked so hurt and troubled and I just--” Minhyuk pauses to catch his breath, kicking out his frustration on the sand, unbothered by the dirt on his new shoes because the only thing he can be bothered about right now is the man standing next to him. Minhyuk runs a hand through his hair and lets out a sigh, trying to keep his lungs from collapsing. “---I just couldn’t stand it, my heart couldn’t stand it. What gave them the right to say that? I had to get you out of there. It’s just too much---”

“Min, please calm down,” Kihyun says, stepping closer to Minhyuk. “It’s okay, you got me out of that uncomfortable situation. I’m okay now.”

“But it’s not okay!” Minhyuk practically shouts at the ocean, hoping the waves could swallow his anguish. “They’d just bring you down again, I can’t let them do that to you again. Damn it, I wish they could just stop treating you like that, you’re an amazing person regardless of whether you can recognise people or not!” Minhyuk avoids looking at Kihyun, not wanting him to see the raging emotions in his eyes, but he can feel Kihyun’s gaze on the side of his face.

“Minhyuk--”

“How long were they saying stuff like that? How could they say something so hurtful? I’m sorry Kihyun, I should be comforting you instead of being like this I-I don’t know what’s gotten to me--”

“Minhyuk!”

Kihyun grabs Minhyuk by the lapels and turns him around so that Minhyuk is finally looking at him. The intensity in Kihyun’s gaze catches Minhyuk off guard and the anger instantly fizzles out into the salty breeze, the words dying on his tongue. Kihyun’s fingers tighten around the material of Minhyuk’s suit as he leans into Minhyuk’s space, not once breaking eye contact.

Kihyun’s eyes are hazel under the golden light, but instead of rage there’s a warm, soothing emotion. “Minhyuk,” Kihyun says again, his voice almost drowned out by the roaring waves, “your presence is comfort itself. And now I understand just how much you care for me.”

“I do,” Minhyuk swallows, realising just how close Kihyun is. So close he can see the tiny mole under Kihyun’s eye and the light scatter of freckles on his cheeks. “I just want you to be happy.”

“I am,” Kihyun affirms with a smile and lord, it’s so golden and magical just how his smile silences the chaos in Minhyuk. “You bring out the happiness in me, and that’s all I could ever ask for.”

Minhyuk might just cry at Kihyun’s words, they hold so much weight he sinks to his knees, bringing Kihyun along with him. But it’s a good kind of weight, the kind that anchors him to solid ground, without the risk of dragging him into quicksand. Minhyuk lets out a deep sigh of relief, his lips lifting into a watery smile. “Okay,” he sniffs, blinking away a tear. “Okay, that’s more than enough for me.”

The few centimeters stretch to fifty when Kihyun releases his grip on Minhyuk’s lapels, smoothing out the wrinkles before moving to adjust his own tie. “Since we’re here now, let’s watch the sunset. We can take our time.”

Somewhere in the back of Minhyuk’s mind is a voice nagging at him to get up because he’s in a suit and they still have a reception to attend. But Kihyun doesn’t seem to mind the sand and sits with his knees to his chest. So Minhyuk follows suit, and they fall silent for a while, watching the blend of reds and oranges painted on the sky.

“I have something to tell you,” Kihyun says.

The last time Kihyun said that, he revealed his secret as they stood on the rooftop watching the sunset. Minhyuk wonders what kind of confession it will be this time. It’s as if the sun sets for something new to be discovered, or for the past to be revealed.

“I had a dream last night,” Kihyun begins quietly, eyes trained on the horizon.

Minhyuk waits as he watches the receding waves in front of them, allowing the soothing roar of the ocean to merge with the thrumming in his ears.

Then Kihyun’s words mingle with the gentle breeze, right in between the golden hour and a silver lining that Minhyuk has been longing for in secret.

“You were in it, Min.”

Minhyuk slowly turns to Kihyun, not believing his ears. “What?”

Kihyun’s gaze is serene and hopeful when he looks at Minhyuk. “You appeared in my dream.”

“But how did you know it was me? You said you can’t--”

“I know,” Kihyun scoffs softly, like he can’t believe what he just said either. “I also had a similar dream on the plane, that’s why I woke up startled, because I recognised you.”

Minhyuk stares at him, wondering if this is a dream again. “How did you...know it was me? I thought that wasn’t possible even in dreams.”

Kihyun shakes his head, his gaze flitting down at the sand before back at Minhyuk, tracing every inch of his face. “I knew it was you because of your voice and mannerisms. No one blinks like you do, even your smile is distinctive. The way you angle your head to the left and wrinkle your forehead whenever you hear a weird opinion from the radio DJ. Even the way you scrunch up your nose and squeeze your eyes shut when the wind hits your face a little too strongly,” Kihyun pauses with a chuckle, and then his features soften even more. All the tense lines around his mouth and forehead disappear and the dazzling light reflects off his eyes, warm and inviting, like the sunset is right in front of Minhyuk. It glows just as bright but restrained enough for the naked eye to directly perceive its glory.

“I knew it was you because of how you made me feel, how you continue to make me feel, Minhyuk,” Kihyun continues on, his eyes trailing over Minhyuk’s face one more time before returning to stare back into Minhyuk’s wide-eyed gaze. “I don’t have to recognise your face for me to recognise you as a person. My favourite person.”

Minhyuk, mesmerised by the spell in Kihyun’s eyes, leans closer until their shoulders brush. “And how do I make you feel, Kihyun?”

“Loved.”

Minhyuk’s breath gets caught in his throat as Kihyun leans forward too, narrowing the space until there’s a few centimeters left between them. Again.

“Do you love me?” Kihyun asks in a whisper, as if the question is too sacred to be said out loud, as if he’s asking about something top secret.

And Minhyuk doesn’t want it to be a secret anymore, not when Kihyun is staring at him so expectantly, so hopefully with a million colours of gold and hazel dancing off his hair, not when this feels more than just a fairytale, more than just a dream.

Instead of answering with words, Minhyuk obliterates the remaining centimeters and finally, finally presses his mouth against Kihyun’s. It’s chaste and hesitant, while his heart thrums and trembles like a breaking wave. He pulls back a little to see Kihyun’s reaction, but he doesn’t look surprised. Instead his eyes glint with something more, something deeper, and when he grabs Minhyuk by the lapels and pulls him back to his lips, it finally dawns on Minhyuk that Kihyun has been waiting for this moment too.

Their waves finally collide.

The ocean rumbles as seagulls fly overhead, but Minhyuk is only aware of the tenderness of Kihyun’s mouth as it slowly moves against his own, soft like petals and warm like that summer night in Busan. It gives Minhyuk confidence and he returns the kiss with much more certainty and fervency, catching Kihyun’s bottom lip between his teeth. The world melts away and all that’s left is this shore, suspended in the center of the universe.

Minhyuk’s hand cradles the side of Kihyun’s face while another rests on his hip to hold him steady, like Kihyun is his anchor despite feeling like he’s soaring in the clouds. Kihyun’s hands slide up Minhyuk’s shirt and into his hair, gently tugging at the strands as Minhyuk pulls Kihyun into his lap. Their kisses become more fluid like a flowing river, travelling across terrains before spilling into the ocean.

Minhyuk spills his heart out into Kihyun’s ocean and is reciprocated with the same intensity. Minhyuk's cheeks flush like the brilliant sunset as his ocean becomes the prettiest shade of blue.

They finally break apart to catch their breaths but Minhyuk clings onto Kihyun’s slender waist, heart thundering for more oxygen. Yet all he needs is Kihyun to feel the air in his lungs, to feel alive. Minhyuk presses their foreheads together, Kihyun’s uneven breath ghosting his lips. “Please don’t tell me that I’m dreaming,” Minhyuk says, hardly recognising the sound of his voice, raspy and raw to the bone.

Kihyun cups his cheeks and lets out a short, breathy laugh. “This reality is so much better than any dream I’ve ever had.” He kisses Minhyuk again, sweet and innocent, but carrying more weight than the ocean, more blazing than the sun.

“So does this-” Minhyuk gestures between them, or what’s left of the space between them, “-answer your question?”

“Hmm,” Kihyun blinks innocently, tilting his head towards the direction of the setting sun which casts another array of warm colours on his hair, “I don’t remember you answering with words.”

The wind teases Minhyuk’s hair while Kihyun teases his heart. Minhyuk smiles, feeling braver as he stares at the radiant man in his lap with the magical scenery surrounding them. Perhaps this is why people like to capture moments during the golden hour. Everything is washed in hope and warmth, the aesthetic colour gradient casting a mysterious spell over land and sea. But as Minhyuk regards the person in his arms, he decides that the golden hour doesn't make the scenery better. The scenery is better because Kihyun is here with him.

“Actually, there’s something else I have to tell you first,” Minhyuk says, figuring there’s no time like now to finally tell him, he can’t keep the secret anymore. He brushes the grains of sand off Kihyun’s hair. “I started working on a webtoon last year and got it published a week ago. It’s my gift to you.”

Minhyuk expects Kihyun to look surprised, maybe gasp or hit his chest and tell him he’s joking. But Kihyun nods calmly, eyes sparkling. “I know. The Whale Takes You by Jamie. That’s you.”

Now Minhyuk is the one surprised. “Wha---how did you…” Kihyun doesn’t read webtoons, he’s the novels-in-hardcopy kind of guy. Unless one of Minhyuk’s friends let slip before--

“I found out three days ago. Eunjung is a fan of webtoons and she was telling me about her current obsession. She showed me the comic and the drawing style looked familiar, that’s when I saw the whales. They looked like the ones you sketched before. And your pen name reminded me of the whale you adopted last year,” Kihyun combs his fingers through Minhyuk’s disheveled hair, attempting to tame them back into their previously kempt state when they were at the wedding. “But I wasn’t sure until I saw the author’s note and the acknowledgments, and everything just fell into place.”

“So...you read the whole thing?” Minhyuk asks. Of all people, he never thought Kihyun would find out about this from Eunjung. He’d lowkey expected Jooheon to let slip of the surprise to Kihyun.

“Yes,” Kihyun smiles, bringing his hand back to Minhyuk’s cheek, “it’s a beautiful story. I love every part of it.”

“You found out, but why didn’t you tell me?” Minhyuk slides his hand on top of Kihyun’s. There’s no disappointment in his tone, just surprise and curiosity.

“I figured that you wanted to surprise me,” Kihyun shrugs and his smile widens. “So I waited for you to tell me and here we are.” He truly has Minhyuk figured out.

“Well,” Minhyuk shrugs back, his cheeks lifting as he gets infected by Kihyun’s contagious smile, “so here we are. I’m glad you love it. You inspired me to explore the paths of life and this webtoon is one of them. I don’t know what’s in store for me, or if the future will still be the same routine of eat-work-sleep, but having you with me is more than enough.”

Kihyun's nose is scrunched up adorably as he lightly pinches Minhyuk’s cheek. “Are you confessing to me right now?”

Minhyuk quirks an eyebrow in amusement as he removes Kihyun’s hand from his cheek only to pull him forward, their noses lightly bumping against each other. “Didn’t I do that just now?” Minhyuk gives Kihyun a light peck on the lips. “Or have you forgotten already?”

Kihyun slides a hand to the back of Minhyuk’s neck, gently drawing circles on the skin. “You’d have to jog my memory then, my mind is so fuzzy when you’re this close to me---”

“I love you,” Minhyuk says, wrapping his arm tighter around Kihyun’s waist, “I love you more than anyone else in this world. Do you love me too?”

“I love you more than any dream I’ve ever had,” Kihyun replies softly, his teasing smile replaced with a bashful one. It’s adorable how he can be playful one second then shy the next. “I love you for being extraordinarily you.”

And Minhyuk falls again, like the sun never failing to fall past the horizon every single day. Minhyuk holds onto Kihyun, kissing his forehead, his nose, his cheeks, mapping every inch of Kihyun’s face with his lips.

Minhyuk pulls back just enough to get lost in the stars in Kihyun’s eyes. The skies are melting into darker blues and violets, but Minhyuk thinks Kihyun shines even brighter now. “Here’s for the paths ahead and skies above,” Minhyuk makes a silent promise before catching Kihyun’s lips again and allows himself to get drunk on love, even though he once thought it was unreachable like the stars.

Minhyuk, like the sand on the shore, gets swept into Kihyun’s ocean all over again.

As much as Minhyuk wants to stay on the beach with Kihyun in his arms, they still have a wedding reception to attend. So they reluctantly get up, dust the sand off their clothes, and walk back to the resort hand in hand, just in time to be seated at their respective tables, but with Kihyun’s parents.

Kihyun’s father seems to sense the shift between them but doesn’t say anything when he sees them return with their hands joined together, whereas Kihyun’s mother has more of a reaction, glancing at Minhyuk every once in a while, although not in an unpleasant manner.

The bride has changed out of her wedding dress and into a ruby evening gown when she passes by each table with Jongdae to check on the guests. The newlyweds eventually approach their table, and the bride starts exchanging words with Kihyun’s parents while Jongdae discreetly flicks at Kihyun’s collar.

“There was sand on your shirt,” Jongdae dusts his fingers but doesn’t look surprised. He then turns to Minhyuk with a wink. “Got a bit rough on the beach, I see. Glad it worked out for you two, congrats.”

Kihyun blushes, ears as red as the bride’s dress. “It’s not like…that. Just focus on your wedding, dude,” Kihyun grumbles before finishing his glass of wine. Minhyuk finds flustered Kihyun adorable and can’t help but reach out to fix Kihyun’s collar and brush a piece of hair away from his eye, not caring if the parents notice.

“Hey, don’t drink too much first,” Jongdae takes his flute away, “don’t forget you’re singing after this.”

“You know I don’t get drunk easily, I’m just mentally preparing myself,” Kihyun sighs, but relaxes at Minhyuk’s touch. “Prepared to be blown away later, Dae.”

Jongdae’s lips curl into his signature smile. “I’ll look forward to that,” he says, just as the bride finishes off the conversation with Kihyun’s parents and places her hand on Jongdae’s arm, they then leave for the next table.

Kihyun’s parents haven’t spoken a word to Kihyun and Minhyuk ever since they came back. Fortunately, it’s not too awkward since there are other relatives at their table to distract his parents for now. Minhyuk wonders if Kihyun will talk to them later after the reception. Things haven’t always been smooth sailing between Kihyun and his family but Minhyuk hopes they can try to resolve what happened today.

But when Kihyun sings while strumming on a borrowed guitar, Minhyuk sees them smile, although not obvious at first. The other guests are silent as they watch Kihyun, mesmerised by his voice, Minhyuk falls in love again while recording the whole performance on his phone. He’ll send it to Jongdae later, who’s currently swaying to the upbeat yet romantic ballad with his new wife.

Mrs. Yoo looks almost nostalgic as she watches her son perform on the makeshift platform, her eyes glistening with what seem like unshed tears. Perhaps she’s regretting the past for her son, she must have heard Kihyun singing all the time when he was younger and for his initial dream to get shattered because of the accident, Minhyuk wonders if all this time she wasn’t actually disappointed at Kihyun for not recognising his family, but actually blaming herself. It’s just too unfortunate that she’s been projecting the wrong emotions on her son, which only hurt the both of them.

So when Kihyun finishes off the song and the guests applaud and cheer for an encore, Minhyuk takes the opportunity to turn to Kihyun’s mother, who looks at him in surprise before quickly wiping away a tear.

“Kihyun told me he doesn’t regret any of it anymore, Mrs. Yoo,” Minhyuk says, “he still sings and plays guitar whenever he can.”

“That’s good,” Mrs. Yoo simply replies, nodding stiffly. But her eyes can’t hide the relief and gratitude in them, and eventually offers him a polite smile, resembling Kihyun. Maybe there’s hope for the family after all.

Half an hour later, Minhyuk finds himself dancing to a slow song with Kihyun under the fairy lights. The reception is ending soon with some of the guests dancing on the lawn while some hang around at the open bar. The bride and groom are also dancing a few feet away, laughing and twirling around like the main characters in a cheesy romcom, and indeed that’s what they are, totally valid since it’s their wedding night. Meanwhile, Minhyuk and Kihyun are just swaying along to the melody and not calculating their steps, just letting the rhythm take them anywhere they want.

“You were right about Jongdae’s taste in music,” Minhyuk comments as he lets Kihyun take the lead, “so far there’s no cliche wedding song that’s been played. This is the best wedding I’ve ever attended.”

The weight of Kihyun’s arms around Minhyuk’s shoulder is just right, keeping him in place. Kihyun’s eyes twinkle like the fairy lights overhead as he looks up at Minhyuk. “Are you sure it’s just because of the playlist and not because of, well, other happenings?”

Minhyuk smirks. “Hm, I’m not sure I remember. My mind is fuzzy with you so close to me.”

“Is that so?” Kihyun grins cheekily. “Well, can you blame me for always wanting to be close to you?”

“Why? Because I’m that attractive?”

“Because you’re Lee Minhyuk, my favourite person whom I love the most.”

If it was Minhyuk’s wedding, he would have kissed Kihyun right then and there in a grand public display of affection. But he doesn’t want to outshine the groom on his special day and just pulls Kihyun closer to his chest, feeling his steady heartbeat. “You sound like a cheesy movie character, do you know that?”

“It’s probably the wedding that’s making me sappy,” Kihyun shrugs, faking nonchalance even though there’s a playfulness in his eyes, “or maybe it’s you. But who knows, the best weddings happen because of good playlists, apparently.”

“It’s the best wedding I’ve ever attended because you’re with me, silly,” Minhyuk whispers into Kihyun’s ear, earning a hushed giggle and a gentle hit to his chest.

The stars are brighter, the air fresher and cooler on the island. The sea rustles in the distance, reminding Minhyuk of their late night encounter in Haeundae. He never would have thought he would be here nearly a year later, completely opening his heart up to Kihyun and to the idea of dreams.

As Minhyuk laughs and sways along to Kihyun’s steps in the afterglow, he realises he’s home.

Minhyuk has just got out of the shower not long ago when Kihyun returns to their shared hotel room. Minhyuk sits on the edge of the bed in his bathrobe as he towels his head dry, watching Kihyun who removes his jacket and loosens his tie, a slightly astounded look on his face.

“You okay? How did it go with your parents?” Minhyuk asks carefully.

Kihyun moves to drape his tie and jacket over a chair, then stands still on the spot. “They actually...apologised to me.”

Minhyuk almost drops the towel before placing it around his shoulders. “They did?”

Kihyun nods despite looking unconvinced. “It feels weird, they never did that before.”

“You deserve an apology for what they said to you,” Minhyuk says, getting up and pulling Kihyun to sit beside him.

“Yeah, my mother admitted that she was too harsh with her words,” Kihyun frowns a little, “it’s still awkward talking to them, but not so tense anymore. Apparently what you said to them earlier triggered an epiphany of some sort, because they said they’ll try to be more considerate.”

Minhyuk blinks, wondering if he heard that right. Perhaps Kihyun’s parents don’t hate him after all.

“My mother had a lot to say,” Kihyun continues, brushing invisible dust off his pants, “she was never really disappointed in me, but more with herself. She has difficulty expressing herself, and my father isn’t the most expressive guy out there either,” Kihyun shrugs, “I don’t know, I guess I’m relieved that they at least talked to me about this?”

Minhyuk nods, placing a comforting hand on Kihyun’s knee. “It’s a step forward. They are learning to establish boundaries and that’s good.”

Kihyun nods along, turning to Minhyuk with the beginnings of a smile. “They also said that they’re glad that I have someone like you with me.”

“So...they don’t hate me.”

“Of course not!” Kihyun exclaims, clasping Minhyuk’s hand. “They didn’t exactly say it, but I think they approve of our relationship, ‘cause they didn’t protest or anything.”

Minhyuk raises an eyebrow. “What did you tell them about us?”

“That we’re dating,” Kihyun pauses, forehead creasing, “we’re dating, right? We haven’t discussed this---”

“We are whatever you want us to be,” Minhyuk simply replies despite the flip-flopping of his heart.

“I want you to be my boyfriend,” Kihyun says immediately, lacing their fingers together.

“Damn it, I wanted to say that first,” Minhyuk pouts, but the whine dissolves in his throat when Kihyun leans in and kisses him on the cheek.

“Sorry, darling. But I just couldn’t wait.”

The lilt in Kihyun’s voice when he says ‘darling’ is sensual music to Minhyuk’s ears, painting a light blush on his cheeks. “It’s okay, at least the wait is over now,” Minhyuk looks down at their hands, marveling at the size difference. “Anyway, I’m glad your parents are okay with us,” he squeezes Kihyun’s hand. “I’m glad things are starting to work out with you guys.”

“Me too,” Kihyun sighs in relief, “this doesn’t mean we’ll be like a happy commercial family but at least we’ll have decent communication from now on.”

“It sure has been a long day,” Minhyuk says, “so many things happened all at once.” He brings Kihyun’s knuckles up to his lips. “Not that I’m complaining, given that we’re here now.”

Kihyun blinks at him. “I’m in a suit and you’re in a bathrobe.”

“Yeah, and?”

Kihyun’s eyes travel down Minhyuk’s figure, unlacing their hands so he can touch the hem of Minhyuk’s bathrobe which barely covers his knees. “You’re in a bathrobe, it’s kind of distracting.” Kihyun’s fingers lightly graze over Minhyuk’s exposed knee, slowly riding upwards and sending a jolt through Minhyuk’s body.

Minhyuk would have panicked and pushed away if anyone else did this to him, but this isn't just anyone. It's Kihyun, and Minhyuk feels bolder somehow even without alcohol or his new shoes on. Minhyuk slides a hand up Kihyun’s shirt and reaches for a button. “You were already distracting throughout the wedding in that goddamn suit,” Minhyuk smirks, “we’re definitely not even.” The button comes undone, and then the next, revealing smooth, delicate collarbones.

Kihyun doesn’t even bat an eyelash as his hand reaches Minhyuk’s bare thigh, the soft material of the bathrobe bunching up at the hips. “I can make it up to you, then we’ll be even,” Kihyun hums innocently, although his voice has gone lower and the look in his eyes is anything but.

The whole ordeal makes Minhyuk lightheaded and he can’t help but inhale sharply when Kihyun squeezes his thigh, the blood already leaving his head and traveling south. Minhyuk’s fingers get caught between the next button as he pulls Kihyun closer. He has unlocked a new side of Kihyun, the one capable of doing dangerous things when they’re alone in a room. If this keeps up, Kihyun would be a trailblazer in Minhyuk’s anatomy, and he's completely fine with it. So he grabs Kihyun by the hips and lifts him onto his lap, delighted when Kihyun lets out a surprised squeak and snakes his arms around Minhyuk's shoulders.

“I would have to take another shower,” Minhyuk says, before giving him a kiss on the lips, but pulls back quickly that Kihyun lets out a small whine. Minhyuk slides his hands up Kihyun's body and back to his chest to conquer another button. He pulls at the fabric to expose the pale expanse of Kihyun’s chest, lowering his head to brush his lips over Kihyun’s neck, satisfied when he hears a soft gasp. “Wouldn’t that be inconvenient?”

“Oh dear,” Kihyun gasps again when Minhyuk kisses his pulse, his hands grasping for the bathrobe belt, “am I causing an inconvenience now? Guess I owe you one more.”

Minhyuk inhales Kihyun’s cologne as he undoes the last button, floral with musky undertones. The scent is addictive and does things to Minhyuk’s head. He nibbles on the sensitive spot on Kihyun’s neck, peppering the skin with kisses as Kihyun’s moans wash over him like a riptide. “Tell me if you want me to stop,” Minhyuk murmurs as his lips travel upwards, teeth latching onto the skin below Kihyun’s jaw.

“Don’t stop,” Kihyun grunts, tilting his head to give Minhyuk an easier angle. The bathrobe belt is tugged free and Kihyun’s hands roam, lighting Minhyuk like a bonfire by the sea. Minhyuk gasps in return when Kihyun rolls his hips, feeling the heat growing tenfold. There's definitely no stopping now when Kihyun is doing things to his body and heart, and Minhyuk keeps wanting more when he can't get enough of Kihyun's wild touches and delicate lips. All he sees is Kihyun, the person he loves the most in the universe, and he needs him so badly. Nobody else would do.

"You're so beautiful, Ki." Minhyuk whispers then kisses him, longer and more passionately this time as he gently holds the side of Kihyun's face. The heat continues to bloom as their tongues melt against each other. Kihyun wraps his legs around Minhyuk's waist and his fingers tug on the strands of his damp hair, devouring his mouth in return, letting Minhyuk know that he yearns for the same thing. Minhyuk breaks away and kisses his way down Kihyun's neck again, just the way they like it.

“Fuck,” Kihyun curses softly, cheeks flushed. “What are you gonna do to me?”

Minhyuk lifts his head and stares into Kihyun’s half-lidded eyes. “What you first said.”

“You dirty bastard,” Kihyun chuckles, gently punching Minhyuk’s bare chest, amusement and lust in his shining eyes.

"Only for you," Minhyuk laughs in admittance, pulling Kihyun back to crash their lips together, savoring the sweetness and the memories they shared that brought them up to this moment.

Kihyun tastes of wine and strawberries from the reception, intoxicating and saccharine. Minhyuk drinks it all in, deepening their kiss and pressing their bodies together until there's nothing left between them, until he's completely drunk on Kihyun, until nothing else matters in the world other than the feeling of Kihyun all around him, other than their hearts pounding fiercely for each other. Minhyuk knows that Kihyun feels the same as he clings onto Minhyuk stronger than gravity pulls them to the ground as he whispers sweet everythings into his ear, trusting Minhyuk to know his thoughts. trusting Minhyuk to take him as he pleases.

So Minhyuk does, taking the priceless gift and giving Kihyun his everything in return, and then some more, because Kihyun deserves a tenfold of everything in the universe. Minhyuk's chest erupts in a series of fireworks when Kihyun responds with the prettiest sounds against his bare skin, repeating Minhyuk's name like a sacred prayer, melodic and almost otherworldly as they move smoothly together to build an amplifying wave, their bodies alight with the brightest flames, their fingers intertwined and tightening around each other while the room fades into clouds of stardust and celestial light, their hearts empowered by pure love and bliss.

Outside, the waves crash as the moon and stars illuminate the night sky. Their oceans become one, each drop either carrying a distinct emotion or a different story, coming together to become a beautiful piece of art. One of a kind that exclusively belongs to Minhyuk and Kihyun.

“Doing this is easier than drawing you out,” Kihyun says, tracing every outline and feature on Minhyuk’s face with a finger, if not committing them to memory, then committing them to heart.

Kihyun’s finger is ticklish against his skin, but he doesn’t budge and lets Kihyun have his way. Kihyun looks at him at any given opportunity, especially tonight, Minhyuk notices. “You can do it as much as you want,” Minhyuk replies, pulling the covers over their bare legs. Kihyun is wearing an identical bathrobe now, which pools around him like a blanket of snow. It’s a size too big for Kihyun’s body, but Minhyuk won't complain since the material nicely displays the artwork he did on Kihyun’s neck. Plus, Kihyun looks extra soft and fluffy to cuddle with, which they’re currently doing right now, with Kihyun’s leg casually draped over Minhyuk’s. Nothing like body heat to keep warm on a chilly spring night.

“Then I’m gonna do it everyday,” Kihyun declares as his hand comes to rest on the side of Minhyuk’s face, “even though I’d wake up not remembering your face, I’m still gonna do it anyway.”

Minhyuk’s heart stirs at the implications behind his words. Kihyun wants to see him everyday even if he doesn’t recognise Minhyuk at first glance. Kihyun wants to see him everyday. Minhyuk doesn’t know how to verbally respond to this fortune with words, so he places a kiss on Kihyun’s forehead to show his gratitude. Kihyun chuckles at the gesture and snuggles closer, their bodies only taking up the space of Minhyuk’s side of the bed and pillow. Kihyun’s cologne has faded, replaced with the simple rose scent of hotel body wash. But he still smells nice, they smell like a bed of roses when they’re cuddled up together on the soft mattress.

“Remember when I wrote you down as someone who doesn’t have a dream but is a dream? I’ll have to change that to ‘dreamy lover who lives in reality’.”

Minhyuk smiles at the description, it seems like he’ll always be tied to both dreams and reality with Kihyun around. Kihyun, who’s now his lover. Minhyuk has never used that word before, but it sure feels right. “Is that why you said that when you look at me, you feel like you’re dreaming?”

“You just seem too good to be true,” Kihyun says as his finger travels across Minhyuk’s face again, like tracing a map of a foreign land, every touch filled with awe and curiosity, “just, the fact that you fell back into my life and didn’t leave, even accepted every part of me. That only happens in dreams.”

“As much as it’s hard to believe, sometimes better things do happen outside of dreams,” Minhyuk says, “you just happened to be in my reality, perhaps not at the most suitable time, but right enough to trigger a ripple across my future.” Minhyuk cradles Kihyun’s cheek gently, a precious oil lamp. “My future, right now and right here.”

“Well, then I’m glad you spilled coffee on me,” Kihyun smiles, his thumb outlining the shape of Minhyuk’s lips, “it’s happened to me many times because I’m just that clumsy, but I guess I’m lucky that you were the clumsy one that day.”

“Damn, so I literally stumbled into your life like the awkward main character of a cheesy romcom, Hyungwon could have been onto something,” Minhyuk gasps in mock horror, earning a light shove to his chest.

“Nothing like the red string of fate bringing us together,” Kihyun plays along, giggling into the pillow.

“Maybe we’re written in the stars,” Minhyuk drawls, squealing when Kihyun pinches his cheek in protest. “Okay, okay, enough of that ridiculous crap,” Minhyuk laughs, then sobers up to say earnestly, “if everything was already written in the stars, then I wouldn’t be here with you right now. Because the reason I’m here should be determined by my own free will, not what fate decides for me.”

Kihyun is listening so intently and blinking his starry eyes, it’s so endearing that Minhyuk can’t help but give Kihyun a peck on the lips. Minhyuk didn’t realise how addictive those rosy lips are, he keeps wanting to leave more kisses on them. “I chose to be here, but leaving you shouldn’t even be an option.”

Kihyun stares at him for a long while, this time his eyes are drawing Minhyuk’s face, catching every fine line and detail. Minhyuk doesn’t move, but Kihyun’s softly intense gaze never fails to make his heart melt. “Me too, I’m happy to be here,” Kihyun finally says, “I’ve always thought that I should live my life without regrets, but I realised that no matter how I live, there’s still stuff I’m bound to regret, because a life without regrets wouldn’t be a life at all.”

The scent of roses envelop Minhyuk like a warm, fuzzy blanket when Kihyun completely drapes himself on Minhyuk, the star in his eyes shining brighter than the lamps in their hotel room. “But if I were to leave you, that would be the biggest regret I’ll ever have, and I wouldn’t wanna live with that,” Kihyun murmurs with a pout, “it would be an absolute nightmare.”

“You won’t have nightmares with me around,” Minhyuk coos, adjusting Kihyun’s loose bathrobe accordingly so it doesn’t give him any more ideas. “I’m your dreamy lover living in reality, but I can be your realistic lover while we live together in a reality that feels like a dream,” Minhyuk concludes proudly.

“Man, you gotta stop quoting like the main character’s love interest in their cheesy romcom.”

“But you’re my main character,” Minhyuk grins, “and you bring the cheesiness out of me.”

Kihyun squirms against Minhyuk in laughter, then slides his leg up Minhyuk’s hip, as if to anchor him to the spot. Not that Minhyuk is planning to detach himself from Kihyun anytime soon. “Hyungwon would be shocked to hear that you stole one of his cliche romantic lines.”

“That’s my own line,” Minhyuk protests, “let’s not bring him into this. We’re in our own world.” In fact, Minhyuk is so immersed in this world that he didn’t check his messages or emails for the whole day. But he knows that he’ll wake up to a spam of texts in the group chat the next morning demanding for details, but that’s the least of his concerns when Kihyun is wrapped around him. They fit well together like puzzle pieces in place.

Kihyun is appeased when Minhyuk leaves another smattering of kisses on his face and jaw. “Mhm, we’re in Jeju already, why not just stay here,” Kihyun groans, eyelids fluttering close.

“We have work on Monday, Mr. Yoo,” Minhyuk gently reminds him, pressing another kiss on the curve of his jaw. “We also have a flight tomorrow and it’s getting late.”

“Dammit, I can’t believe it’s gonna be Monday soon,” Kihyun sighs with a frown but loosens up when Minhyuk plants a kiss on his temple. “But it’s not late yet,” he continues, digging his ankle into Minhyuk’s back and pressing his hips against Minhyuk’s stomach, “and our flight is in the afternoon. We’ve still got plenty of time to explore this...island.”

“You’re practically asking for it,” Minhyuk groans, then rolls over until he’s engulfing the roses instead. So much for not having any more ideas.

Kihyun hooks another ankle over Minhyuk’s hip as Minhyuk hovers above him, eyes brighter than dreams. “But you’d do anything I ask, right?”

Minhyuk will pluck out every star in the sky if Kihyun wants him to, will even burn the world around them if that’s what Kihyun wishes for. “Yeah, only pretty people have that special privilege,” Minhyuk says in a hushed tone.

“Oh,” Kihyun gasps softly as Minhyuk dips down to tease his collarbones, “you think I’m pretty, Mr. Lee?”

That’s what Kihyun used to address him when they worked on the joint project, formal and distant. But now it’s full of warmth and affection, sweet like honey and Minhyuk’s heart flutters. He interlocks his fingers with Kihyun’s and lifts his head to stare him down, sincere and honest when he reveals his last secret, “I already thought you were pretty the moment I first saw you, Mr. Yoo.”

Kihyun’s lips part in surprise, he clearly didn’t expect that Minhyuk found him attractive two years ago, long before they even became friends. “The first time I heard your voice, I thought it was really nice,” Kihyun blurts out, a pink tinge on his cheeks, “it’s bright and sunny, but also soft and husky,” he explains, then lifts his head off the pillow to place a kiss on Minhyuk’s adam’s apple, “like the beach during the day and night.”

Kihyun is so beautiful with his flushed cheeks and messy black hair, like a prince dropped straight out of a fairytale and onto Minhyuk’s bed with just a bathrobe on, and he’s clinging onto Minhyuk like he’s the most valuable treasure on Earth. It feels surreal and Minhyuk can’t help but wonder again if this is a dream. So he kisses Kihyun until his lungs burn just to convince himself that the exertion he’s feeling is real and rewarding, that he’s reached the brightest star that is Kihyun. Or maybe he just wants to feel Kihyun’s lips again because of how their mouths melt into each other perfectly, like how the sun paints the sky in the prettiest colours only when it’s kissing the horizon. Together, Minhyuk and Kihyun form the most magical sunset through the most natural phenomenon.

“Let’s go down to the beach before we leave tomorrow,” Minhyuk suggests when he’s settled back onto the mattress with Kihyun back in his arms.

Kihyun hums in agreement, blinking slowly as drowsiness starts seeping into his system. “Beaches are nice, but my favourite one will always be Haeundae.”

“Me too,” Minhyuk smiles, “it’s where it all started for us. You comforted me with your words and music even though it wasn’t necessary.”

“I chose to, I couldn’t just ignore someone who looked so lost,” Kihyun says before yawning softly like a cat. Minhyuk feels his own yawn building in his throat and cheeks, realising how tired he has become too. It’s really been a long and eventful day.

“Thanks to you, I’m not lost now,” Minhyuk murmurs, feeling as if he’s sinking into the clouds. “I mean, I still can’t be certain of anything in the future, but it makes me treasure the present moment even more. I don’t know what will happen at work or how the webtoon will turn out in the long run but, I’m not afraid to find out anymore.”

“Look how far we’ve come,” Kihyun smiles sleepily, and it’s bright even in the low light, “even without dreams or long lost dreams.”

Minhyuk nods, cheek digging into the pillow that his smile comes out stilted but still as genuine as a hopeful soul. “Sweet dreams, Ki.”

Kihyun snuggles closer against Minhyuk’s chest and closes his eyes. “Guess I’ll see you again.”

The room falls silent as Kihyun drifts into slumber. Minhyuk reaches over the nightstand and turns off the lamp, then lies back down, listening to Kihyun’s even breathing until he eventually falls asleep too. All the while, the sea never sleeps, but it guards them with its storming yet soothing waves. Not because it wishes for them to drown, but to keep them afloat.

The next morning, they return to the beach, barefoot on the sand and leaving a trail of footprints up until they reach the same spot where they shared their first kiss.

This time, they go close enough for the waves to splash on their ankles. Kihyun picks up a stick and traces their names together in the sand. Minhyuk reaches for his hand as they watch the waves return to wash their names into the deeper blues, like the ocean is making a promise to take them to a better place.

Minhyuk shows Kihyun the latest picture of Jamie, who’s been sighted near the Farallon Islands this time. Her body leaps up to the surface acrobatically, shooting a fountain-like sprinkles of seawater into the air, her fins extended mid-air like a greeting, as if to say ‘let’s go on a bizarre adventure together’.

“You’ve officially added one more thing to my travel bucket list,” Kihyun says as he takes a step closer to the sea, “Whale-watching with you.”

Minhyuk smiles as he steps forward. That’s another adventure added to his list as well. “I’ve read online that you can watch humpback whales on the Gold Coast of Queensland, the next season is from June to October.”

Kihyun chews on his bottom lip in contemplation, then laces his fingers with Minhyuk to bring him closer. “A summer trip to Australia,” Kihyun says as another wave laps on their feet, “what do you say?”

“It’ll be winter in the Southern Hemisphere, but yes,” Minhyuk beams, “of course I’d go with you.” Winter in Australia isn’t as cold as in South Korea, but Minhyuk won’t let the bone chilling weather dampen his spirits when Kihyun is his little bonfire. “I’d follow you anywhere.”

Kihyun smiles up at him and a homey feeling washes over Minhyuk greater than the waves. “Guess you’re stuck with me now,” Kihyun says fondly before pulling Minhyuk to him in a loving kiss.

Kihyun tastes like dreams and promises, of safety and affirmations. Minhyuk wraps his arms around Kihyun and closes his eyes, feeling the warmth radiate off Kihyun’s heart and into his own. He loses himself to the morning light and Kihyun’s affectionate touches, thanking the universe and himself for finally doing something right.

The ocean crashes around them in waves of joy and anticipation, and most importantly, of a flexibility that translates to certainty in Minhyuk’s life philosophy. He holds onto Kihyun as they continue to collide with the tides, and for once, he doesn’t worry about tomorrow or the tomorrows that will follow soon after. Because  Minhyuk knows he will now wake up each day with the fondest memories.

Minhyuk used to question the concept of dreams, but not anymore. He’s realised that he’s been asking the wrong questions all along, only looking outwards and asking what dreams mean to people who are achieving their goals, when dreams have always been different for everyone, just like how every piece of snowflake is one of a kind.

But Kihyun came along and changed the tides, helping Minhyuk realise that dreams can be influenced but most importantly it must come from within. Minhyuk had wanted to dream for Kihyun, to be his eyes so Kihyun could see the world with full recognition, so he could cast all his social anxieties away. Now Minhyuk dreams of a reality, which isn’t much given that reality isn’t limitless like dreams. He’s been living in a self-apathetic reality for the most part, but with everything he’s learned in the past year, Minhyuk has started living with self-compassion. How can he not with all the compassion he’s received from the important people in his life, especially Kihyun?

Minhyuk simply dreams for reality. Reality is that Kihyun will remain a facial amnesiac and Minhyuk will continue to figure out the pathways in his life. They might hit a few potholes and roadblocks on the way, but the difference in Minhyuk’s current reality is that they won’t have to go through these things alone anymore. Reality is that Kihyun could spiral into self doubt on a bad day and Minhyuk could feel lost all over again, but that’s just a bad day passing through for the good days to follow suit. Even on a bad day, Minhyuk will remind Kihyun of his worth, and Kihyun will soothe Minhyuk through songs and words of affirmation. Because everything will be okay even if they don’t go the way you expected. Because sometimes expectations don’t match reality, but that doesn’t mean the end result will be a terrible one. Sometimes it’s even better than you ever hoped for.

Because Minhyuk eventually quits his job, figuring it’s time he did, although he has to console Jooheon with monthly installments of dumplings and weekly lunch visits. But his webtoon success opens new doors for him, prompting him to pick up the stylus and draw whatever comes to mind. Inspiration is like a flowing river ever since Kihyun entered his life. The Whale Takes You becomes adapted into a movie, and Kihyun takes part in writing and singing the soundtrack, marking his first official song release as an independent artist. However, it’s done anonymously because he’s not doing it for fame but as a token of appreciation for Minhyuk.

Because Kihyun continues his work in Starship as a team manager while Minhyuk starts creating a new webtoon and becomes a kindergarten teacher. It’s amazing yet daunting how many things have changed but the things that stay constant are the moments after sunset: when Kihyun comes home from work and into Minhyuk’s arms, healing and recharging in each other’s presence. When the day breaks, they’ll wake up with a renewed drive to get through the motions.

Because sometimes things end beautifully and tragically like a sunset before the world plunges into cold darkness, just so that the sun can rise again and bring forth its radiance, warmth, and a chance for a new beginning.

Notes:

it's been one hell of a journey writing this fic. i can't believe i wrote this much in a short amount of time, my sem break was well spent :')
if you've reached this point, thank you. thank you for joining me in this 50k monster journey, it might be a mess, it's not perfect, but hey, nothing is perfect in this life, which is one of the messages of this story. you know that japanese art (kintsugi) where they put broken bowls together with gold? it's a reminder that we have to embrace our flaws and go through the hard times before we can realise our full potential. everyone of us is flawed, but we are also our own unique piece of art <3

anyway, i hope you enjoyed reading this! i would love to know your thoughts on this story so please leave a comment if you wanna scream at kihyuk or whatever, i will reply with my own screaming at kihyuk or whatever :D
