Chapter Text

By the time Miyako got home and walked through the door, she felt dead. Her feet dragged and she struggled to keep her eyes open. She was ready to simply pass away at this point and succumb to an eternal sleep.

Slipping her shoes off, she stumbled her way through her dimly lit living room. Squinting to adjust to the dark, she took in the sound of the tv playing. Grumbling at the annoying sound, she didn’t notice the eyes staring at her from the dining table until it was too late.

“So where have you been?”

Miyako froze like she just got caught with her hand in the cookie jar. Turning slowly she gave a little forced laugh and smiled innocently at the uncomfortable déjà vu. “Oh hey Rumi, how was your day?”

The chair at the dining table screeched against the floor as she got out of it. Miyako started to sweat slightly, she feared for her life. With her arms crossed Rumi narrowed her eyes at the girl, making her way from the dinning room to the living room with an intent to kill. “Don’t avoid the question. Where have you been?”

Nervously avoiding her eyes, Miyako lifted her hand to show the orange snacks. “I was getting you carrots?” She tried, wincing at her unconvincing voice.

“Was that a question or a statement?” She asked with an eyebrow raised.

“Both?”

Rumi stared at the girl and noticed the bags under her eyes. She prided herself on being both observant and ruthless and seeing as her sister's eye baggage was definitely more prominent than before she left she didn’t hesitate. “You used your quirk again didn’t you?” Rumi narrowed her eyes, “didn’t I tell you to stop using your quirk where everyone can see, you can get arrested if you get caught.”

“Sorry” she squeaked, trying to come up with an excuse. Using her quirk was just so easy. It was especially useful to her, specifically who was late to a lot of things. Quicksilver was honestly a natural response at this point.

Still feeling her sisters accusing eyes on her, she thought hard. Explaining her whereabouts without using the words villain or attack was going to be challenging. That was like half of the reason she was out late. The other being listening to All Might spill all his secrets but she couldn’t say anything about that either. Really the only thing she could be truthful about was her new friend Bush boy and his wonderful mother. ‘His mother! Yes! What did I tell her? Right, the notebook. Thank you brain! Work or well suffer the wrath of an angry Rumi!’

“…So at first I was going to get you carrots and I did! I went to the store and bought a big bulk of them for us to eat for the whole week. It wasn’t much money so I still have change and stuff. After I bought them I was going to walk home but then I bumped into this kid with really green hair and a yellow backpack. We fell and he dropped his notebook in front of me but ran off before I could give it back to him-” she said quickly looking anywhere but at her sister. Before she could continue she was cut off.

“Woah, slow down, Cottontail. I barely understood what you were saying.” Rumi said beckoning with her hands. “Try again but slower this time,” she said, giving the girl a pointed look.

Miyako nodded and took a deep breath. ‘You can do this Miyako. Lie like your life depends on it, because it does!’

“I went to the store to get carrots like you asked” she articulated. “But then I bumped into this boy which made him drop his notebook. He ran off before I could give it back and then I spent the rest of the afternoon looking for him. I finally found him but he was being yelled at by this angry blonde kid so I used my quirk to save him before the situation escalated. I then walked him home to make sure he was safe. In my hunt for the boy, I lost the grocery bag but he was kind enough to give me some carrots he and his really nice mother had in their fridge. Then I walked home and now I’m being interrogated” she finished, feeling confident enough in her excuse to finally look her sister in the eyes.

It was an intense stare off with their eyes clashing almost as if challenging the other to back down. Having done this a lot, Miyako knew that her sister rarely gave in. That being the case, it only made her cheer internally when red eyes faltered. It wasn’t everyday that Rumi Usagiyama would step down. She must be tired or something.

“Okay,” Rumi calmly stated. If it weren’t for the person who was saying this, Miyako would have felt reassured, but she knew her sister well. The calm voice didn’t make the younger girl feel any less on edge. “The only thing I’m wondering is why you didn’t answer my texts?”

“Your texts?” She repeated back, confused.

“Yeah” a sharp smile full of teeth blared back at her. “The texts I sent you hours ago.”

Miyako swallowed a gulp. Reaching into her backpack for her phone, her face turned frightened when she saw the multiple texts from her sister on the Lock Screen. There were also two missed calls from Hitoshi but that’s an issue for later. “Um, sorry?” She apologized pathetically.

“That was a weak ass apology Cottontail and you know it” she pointed out unimpressed. “I think I’ll be merciful today just because you have the carrots I asked for. Just know that the next time you make me worry like that, it won’t end well for anyone,” it was funny how such a wolffish smile came from someone who literally had a big white fluffy tail. Somehow, the thought of it was a lot more disturbing than it should have been.

“Now let’s go eat some dinner!”

“S-Sure”

-

The meal was generally uneventful. Miyako elaborated on her lie some more (Like a liar) and they talked about their day. Aside from Rumi boasting about how she destroyed another punching bag, the day was pretty boring in the eventful life of a pro hero.

Asking Rumi for training schedules went fairly well. She agreed but not without a devastating price.
“I get your share of carrots for three weeks.”

“One week”

“Three”

“Two weeks that’s all your getting”

“Fine, but the gremlin has to come over on Friday for a movie night.”

“Deal.”

Miyako prayed that Hitoshi wouldn’t kill her. If he didn’t, then no carrots for two weeks will. She’ll be dead before even going to high school. ‘I guess I’ll just die then. Goodbye future, see you never’

“Since I’ll be making the plans you have to tell me what you guys want to focus on.”

Nodding her head, she tries to recall what they talked about earlier today. She was too tired to use her brain. “Oh!” She perked up. Rolling up her sleeve she spots the familiar writing on her arm. “It says Miyako for stamina and-“ she snorts remembering earlier. “Hitoshi for de-noodlefiying”

Placing her hand on her chin, Rumi nods in agreement. “That sounds about right. I’ll leave some space for quirk training and studying time as well, since you two will probably need it. Is he still hesitant to use his quirk?”

“Yeah, but don’t worry, I’ll convince him,” she smirked. “There’s nothing he won’t do, if I annoy him for long enough.”

“Great, I’ll have them done for Monday so you guys can start then.” She said satisfied. “Now that that’s settled, let’s get to bed. I’ve got to wake up early tomorrow since I’ve got some fights to win and some asses to kick” Her bloodlust started to show through her killer grin.

“And I need to pass out because sleep is good,” Miyako yawns, ignoring her sister's expression. “Oh and tomorrow I’m going out to meet with a friend,” she adds before heading down the hall to her room.

“That’s fine, just don’t come home pregnant”

“Rumi,” Miyako groans at her comment. She didn’t even have to look back to know that the woman had a shit eating grin on her face. Slamming her door, the girl yells a goodnight.

With a sigh of exhaustion, Miyako turns towards her bed and promptly falls face first. She only got a moment of peace before her phone started making an atrocious ringing noise. With the loudest groan in annoyance she's made all week, Miyako waits for it to go to voicemail. ‘Thank god’ she thought as the phone stopped ringing. It was quiet for another minute but to the girl's despair, it started once more.

Picking up the phone as she glares at her friend's name on the screen. “I swear to god that I will kill you for interrupting my sleep. Now what do you want!” She angrily wined.

“Why the hell did I just see your face on the news?”

All he got was silence in response.

“And why did you look so angry?”

Now there were multiple thoughts that ran through the girls head at this time. The main one, ‘when did I ever go on the news’ was quickly replaced with a very panicked, ‘what if Rumi saw me on the news and knows I lied.’ her eyes just wanted to close so she could sleep, now she has to worry about this.

“Miyako”

As if her sleep deprived brains suddenly realized she was still on the phone, her eyes blinked again trying to actually come out of her thoughts.

“Uhhhhhh”

“Don’t ‘uhhhh’ me, what the hell did you do this time”

Resting her head and getting comfortable in bed she listened detached, while her mouth blabbered away on its own.

“I met Alice, and he inspired me to go my sonic speed to run through fire and get this blonde hedgehog who was being gobbled up by slime. I then became a strong man who fell because of the weather change. Then All Might became a balloon and made me have an existential crisis. I also met the most wonderful small green woman who gave me carrots,” She said wistfully as she closed her eyes. She was so tired that she didn’t exactly process the things she was saying.

“Are you high?”

He didn’t get a response.

“Miyako?”

There was still no response.

“Okay then” he drawled. “I'll just assume that you’re high and asleep.” He rolled his eyes playfully. If he smiled at the little snores he heard through the phone then nobody had to know. “Goodnight, you wascally wabbit.”

-

‘Why do alarms exist?’ Miyako whined as she hugged her pillow tighter to her body. The beeping of the wretched machine assaulted her ears so much so that she was tempted to throw her phone out of the window to stop it. It wasn’t a nice feeling, waking up with your alarm right next to your sensitive ears.

After the hassle of getting up and getting rid of the gross feeling of sleeping in her uniform, Miyako checked the watch that was still sitting in her pocket.

12:00 pm.

‘It’s still too early’ she bemoaned. ‘At least there’s no school today. I don’t know how I would have functioned if I had to wake up at 6 :30’

The girl's morning went by pretty fast after the initial struggle of waking up. Before she knew it, she was out the door, semi ready for whatever the day had for her. ‘Takoba Municipal beach park, here I come’

She had some idea where she was going but ultimately the plan to get there was to just figure it out in the way with the power of will. She knew of the beach but All Might didn’t really give her directions. Their conversation was pretty brief yesterday before he told her of the meeting. Alice, she guessed, was unaware of their whole conversation seeing as he was out of it the whole time. But no matter, he didn't really need to know about it anyways. She just kind of wished he was here to tell her how to get there.

Miyako wasn’t sure what this meeting was going to be about. All Might wasn’t exactly clear on what he wanted to talk to her about, saying to meet at the beach around two o’clock and meet him alone. Normally, that would be shady as hell, but seeing as he was the symbol of peace and he seemed pretty trustworthy, she decided to meet with him anyways.

Just in case though, as her sister has told her to trust nobody (even the symbol of peace) she had made a pre-made text of her location and an emergency message to send to her sister and her best friend in case things end up terrible. ‘Stay smart kids’ she nodded.

Walking up the steps to get to the beach, her nose scrunched a bit. The smell wasn’t as horrible as she thought it would be but it definitely did not belong to her list of favourite smells. Sometimes she’s happy that she didn’t gain the ability of super smell. Hearing was enough, thank you very much.

Spotting a skinny blonde man sitting on a bench that looked over the beach she made her way over. Plopping down next to the man and making him jump in surprise. “Young Usagiyama! I’m glad you could make it. I thought you weren’t going to show,” All Might said, surprised to see her.

“Yeah sorry about that, I missed the train and then got lost” she replied, making him sweatdrop at her nonchalant tone. “I’ll probably be late in the future as well, I’ve been told it’s one of my tendencies”

“I’m sure it’s not that bad”

“The school has given up on calling my guardian regarding how I got to class late,” she answers. “It happens a lot, but I’m working on it”

“I see, well as long as you’re aware of the issue and are working on it”

He got a thumbs up and a lazy smile in response.

“Anyway” he started. “I’m sure you’re wondering why I’ve asked you to meet me today.” Miyako's head bobbed up and down, eyeing the man interested. “To be honest, I’ve been meaning to meet you for a long time now.”

This got the girl confused. “What do you mean All Might?”

“Toshinori Yagi, When I’m in this form it would be best to call me that. I think you at least deserve to know my real name.” He interrupted chuckling a bit. He patted the girl's head before lifting his hand and staring at the garbage on the beach. His eyes roamed from pile to pile as he mourned the view he once knew and loved.

“Okay then, Yagi,” she replied, looking up to where the man patted her head. “So are you going to tell me why you sound like you know something I don’t?” She raised a brow at the man.

He just chuckled at her accusation. “In a way you could say that. Before that though, I wanted to let you know why I decided to let you stay and hear about one for all with Young Midoriya. ”

“How’d you know I was wondering about that?” Her head tilted. “Hearing such a big secret made me really curious about it. It didn’t seem like something you’d spill to just anyone”

“But you’re not just anyone, Young Usagiyama. I didn’t realize it until you introduced yourself but I know you.” He admitted.

This got Miyako stumped. How could the number one hero of Japan know her? She hasn’t done anything besides maybe the slime villain to garner attention. The only thing that came to mind is her sister. The only thing was that they kept their familial relation a secret to the public.

Being the sister of the number five hero in Japan would be pretty recognizable, the family resemblance was pretty apparent. Sure, rabbit mutations were common but it was the principal of the matter.

Rumi kept her real name out of her hero work so unless you knew her on a friendly basis you wouldn’t know their last name. That’s why people don’t usually know of the connection. Not that Miyako minded, she wasn’t going to exploit her sister, that would make people butt into her business even more than they usually do. It would also put her in a lot of danger if the public found out. Her sister made a lot of people mad and she would be at risk if villains ever found out that the hero that beat them up had a little sister. With all this in mind, it confused her that All Might would know her, because as far as she knew, Rumi didn’t have a lot of friends. She didn’t like people in general. Miyako would have known if she was friends with All Might.

“You… know me?” She repeated back. “How? Because I think I would remember meeting the literal number one hero in all of Japan.”

His head turned to look at the girl who tugged on her ears. He thoughtlessly smiled at her. The familiar sight before him made his heart hurt as he reminisced. “You’ve never met me and I’ve certainly never met you, but I do know you. Or know of you, so to speak.” He said, eyeing a seagull that landed at the top of one of the garbage piles. It yelled a bit, making the girl's ears twitch, scoping the noise on her raydar.

“I heard a lot about you when you were young. After what happened, I never thought I’d meet you. Your sister wasn’t a surprise, seeing as she’s such a successful pro and so high on the rankings. I doubt she’d remember meeting me as it was such a long time ago. I’ve meant to talk to her for some time but I’ll admit, I'm a bit scared to approach her. She's really intimidating.” He shivered.

Miyako just blinked at the man. “Yeah she can be like that sometimes,” she said, ignoring the fact that the man probably had faced terrifying villains in the past and was trembling like a scared child at the thought of her sister. ‘Rumi can be scarier than a lot of villains out there’ she reasoned.

“But back to the point, yesterday when I first saw you at the villain attack I had my suspicions. Suspicions that were only proved right when you introduced yourself.” Glancing at the way her eyes tried to decipher him, he smiled back at her.

“I’ve known the Usagiyama last name for longer than you’ve been alive.” He paused.

“Your mother was my best friend.”

-

“My mother…” Miyako started, but lost the voice to speak. Understandinding her hesitance Toshinori continued.

“Amaya Usagiyama has always been a dear person in my life. I met her a very long time ago and we had been close friends ever since. I knew a lot about her life and she knew almost everything about mine.” He smiled at the thought of her.

Reeling back from the bombshell he dropped she took in what he just said. “Does that mean…?”

“Yes, she knew the secret of One for all” he admitted. “She knew about it for almost the exact same reason you do now.”

Beside him, Miyako tilted her head. “Which is?”

“Because she had my back, and I need you to have Young Midoriya’s” he turned to her expectantly. Her expression didn’t change as much as he expected but her ears did flop to the side after his statement.

‘Have his back?’ She pursed her lips. “Well yeah, he’s my friend so of course I’ll have his back.”

Toshinori’s expression turned grateful. “That’s good to hear, I know from experience that the secret of One for all is too much for one person to carry alone. I would have crumbled under the pressure if it weren’t for the support from Amaya and my sensei” his thoughts turned sad with grief as he thought of the dead. “If Young Midoriya is going to become my successor then he needs someone by his side. If you’re anything like the great woman your mother was, then I know you can be the person he needs.” He declared making Miyakos smile falter the tiniest bit.

How was she supposed to live up to a woman she knew almost nothing about? Of course she’ll be there for Alice but filling her mother’s shoes? All this talk about her was getting to her a bit.

It has been a tough subject ever since she died. Rumi never liked to talk about her and her grandparents didn’t even mention her name, much less talk about how great she was. It was strange to hear someone talk about her so easily. The memories of her before she died were one of the only things that she had of her. To be completely honest Miyako didn’t even know much about her mother's life, too young to remember much about her. So hearing that she was actually All Might's best friend was, understandably, shocking.

“So you told me about One for All because you thought that I could look out for Izuku the same way my mother looked out for you?” She asked slowly, making the man's head bob in confirmation. “Wait, so does that mean my mom was a hero?”

Quirking up his eyebrow, he squinted at her. “No, she was a brilliant inventor and was heavily involved with the support industry. She was in the support course while I was in the hero course during our time at UA. She was quite successful as well. Did you not know?”

Shaking her head slowly, her face scrunched. Hearing all this information about someone she’s always wanted to know more about all her life, was making her have mixed feelings. She was happy to find out more but at the pit of her stomach something twisted. She should have known all of this already, why was she just learning this now. From All Might of all people!

“My mom is kind of a touchy subject in my family so no one really talks about her a lot,” she explains with a downcast expression. The hero thinks back to the few times he’s met his friends' parents. If they were anything like they were back then, then it’s no wonder the girl didn’t know anything about her mother. They were probably still ashamed of her.

“I see, so this is the first time you're learning about her.” Miyako nodded, agreeing. “What I do know about her is limited but I keep that information close to my heart anyways” she said.

“Well I’d be happy to tell you more about her” the blonde man smiled gently at the girl. “She was truly an amazing person.”

“I’d love to hear more,”

-

The two sat in front of the beach for a couple more hours sharing stories and before they knew it, it was already late afternoon. Miyako’s sense of time must have spread to the blond because they were both shocked at how late it had gotten. Too invested in telling tales and asking questions about the woman they once knew.

After being reminded to meet tomorrow morning, the two parted ways. Thoughts of the deceased woman still plagued both their minds but the opportunity of being able to talk about her freely, gave them both something to look forward to.

Miyako kicked pebbles as she walked. She had a lot to think about after her meeting with All Might. It hadn’t really gone the way she expected. The last way she thought she would spend her day was listening to All Might tell her stories of her dead mom.

To think that her mom started the support company that came up with the special fabrics heroes use for costumes and weapons! Hearing about her made her more in awe of the woman the more she heard. All Might even told her that the company Wonderland Inc. was still going strong and the infamous anonymous inventor White Rabbit was still being talked to this day. She even held a place in an inventors hall of fame!

Miyako had known none of this before. She didn’t really keep up with the support industry but not knowing that her mother used White Rabbit as her alias? She had claimed that name years ago! And she only finds out now that her mother took it first and was using it to be a big successful inventor. Unexceptable!

Well, the more she thought about it, it did explain the W.R. engraved on the back of her pocket watch. Also the fact that the clock hadn’t broken, despite it being a super old pre-quirk watch and in her possession for years. Her mother must have done something inventive to make sure it stayed in such nice condition even if it had been dropped multiple times. Probably a good idea on her part to re-enforce it before giving it to a young child. She wasn’t the most graceful as a kid.

But hearing the man tell her more about her mom she couldn’t help but find it funny. Apparently even though she only spent a few years with her, Miyako was very similar to the woman. All Might telling her about how she was very excitable and blunt. It was nice to know that she had something in common with her mother. It would also seem like she looked similar when she was her age. Her mother had darker skin than she did and a different shade of violet hair but besides the different eye colour, she definitely took after her. The only thing she didn’t get was the ruby red eyes, Rumi inherited those instead.

It made her feel happy that she now knew things about the woman who raised her in her early years. All Might gave her a connection and she couldn’t be more thankful. She couldn’t help but want to go home and spend hours researching about White rabbit on the computer. She was very eager to hear more about her accomplishments, it was all very impressive.

Walking with her head bobbing to a tune in her head her flopped ears bounced with it. She was too out of it to realize that someone was in front of her.

Bumping right into said person, Miyako gasps as they both stumble. Activating her quirk on instinct she instantly catches the person as they fell really slowly. Placing them up right, Miyako had to double take when she stared at the frozen woman she had just caught. ‘Uhhhh’ her brain stalled for a moment, trying to comprehend the sight before her. “Did Hedgehog boy turn into a grown woman all of a sudden?” She asked herself before disabling her quirk.

The woman blinked as she took in her surroundings. All of a sudden she was standing perfectly straight instead of stumbling to the ground like she was just a second ago. It was almost as if it never even happened in the first place. She was caught off guard for a moment when she noticed the girl standing infront of her. As her eyes followed the ears sticking out of her head, she made eye contact with widened grey eyes looking back at her.

They held eye contact for a moment before Miyako’s eyes widened even larger as she stepped back to apologize profusely. “I am so sorry! I wasn’t looking where I was walking, I didn’t mean to bump into you! And then use my quirk!”

Raising a brow at the girl, the ash blonde woman burst out laughing. Waving her hand like she was waving it off. “It’s not a problem! I’m guessing you’re the one who saved me from falling in my ass anyways. I’ll forgive you.” She said ruffling the girl's hair. “Stand up straight dear, you remind me of my friend's son with all that apologizing.” A sharp grin rose from her lips. The woman looked at her almost as if she was under a microscope. Miyako couldn’t help but squirm under her gaze. It wasn’t as intense as Rumi’s but it still made her want to flee. The look almost screamed predator.

“Say…” the woman started. “You wouldn’t happen to know anything about how idiotic son got caught up in the sludge villain attack yesterday? I remember seeing the news after and I swear that your face popped up.” The predatory look only intensified as the woman narrowed her eyes. Miyako couldn’t help but sweat heavily. If this was the mother of the angry blonde boy then she didn’t know how his mother would react to the truth. If it was anything like how he did, then she was in for it. “U-Uh-“ she stuttered only to be cut off by the woman grabbing her hands.

“Yes! You’re the bunny girl that Katsuki was grumbling about! Who would have thought I’d run into you! Well, I guess you ran into me” she laughed. “I heard how you saved my brash son from suffocating, so thank you! I apologize that you needed to save him in the first place.” She added making Miyako frown a bit. She didn’t think it was his fault he was held as a hostage. Did his mother think he asked to almost die? It seemed like it by the way she was speaking.

“My name is Mitsuki Bakugo by the way, I’m sure my son thanked you already, but I would like to invite you for dinner in gratitude,” Mitsuki said. Her words made Miyako snort internally. That angry hedgehog didn’t say anything to her and he even called her a bitch behind her back! She didn’t think that he was ever going to thank her. And what is with everyone inviting her for dinner right after meeting her? First Inko and now this woman who was the spitting image of her rude son.

“Ah I’m very sorry Mrs. Bakugo but I already have plans tonight for dinner, but maybe some other time?” She tried. Mitsuki’s grin wavered a bit but she still held a smile. “That’s too bad, but I get it, being young and going on dates and such,” she nodded like she knew exactly what the girl was doing. “Why don’t I give you my number and we can plan for dinner sometime else. I’d really love to thank you in some way.”

“You don’t need to thank me” Miyako shook her head smiling. “I’m just glad your son didn’t die”

Mitsuki cood, “You’re so sweet! I wish I had a daughter like you,” she continued to gush. “You definitely need to come for dinner now. Maybe your attitude can brush off on Katsuki!”

Giving a little forced laugh she watched the woman gush over her. “O-okay” she stumbled and handed over her phone to the woman. After swapping numbers she was forced into a very tight hug with the woman and suddenly left standing in the middle of the sidewalk alone.

‘Well that was strange’ she chuckled as she recalled the meeting. ‘I guess I’ll meet the angry boy officially soon then’ she thought as she started walking again. ‘I wonder how he’ll react when he finds out that I have his mom's number.’ Snickers filled the air. ‘He’s going to be pissed.’ She kicked a rock with her hands in her pockets. ‘I can’t wait to see.’

And with thoughts of their future meeting she walked, hands in her pockets, to her best friend's house. Even if he didn’t know she was coming, she was showing up anyway. She had to fill him in after all.

Notes:

!!! Miyakos mom! I’m really excited because I’m expanding on miyakos family a little. Amaya is a character that I’m really excited to explore more about. It will probably revolve around how it effects Miyako and the people and world around her but she’s someone that Miyako will have mixed feelings about. I won’t say anything else but thanks for reading! Don’t be afraid to leave a comment or anything. I’m happy to listen!
