Chapter Text
It was on a cool Autumn morning when Aubrey had approached him - something about meeting up by the swings later tonight. Sunny was far too bleary to completely understand what was going on, so he simply had given a lazy thumbs up and sunk further into his warm, cozy scarf...It was only later, when he was fully awake and consequently right in the middle of his math class that the gravity of the situation hit him:
Him. And Aubrey. Alone at night? For what purpose?! Was he going to get beaten up-
Ok dial it back Sunny, you're daydreaming again. Focus.
There is absolutely nothing to panic over, another totally normal day, in fact this never happened. The more he tried to avoid it however, the more it kept creeping back up with equal force. Fact is that he was dreadfully worried about the implications of tonight's visit no matter how hard he tried to rationalize against it. At some point he must have shot himself into a meditative state, because he blinked and all of a sudden he was on the steps of the school building again. The Sun's sleepy rays told him just how long he had been spaced out.
The first thing he did after coming back to his senses was rush back to his house to prepare for - what exactly, he didn't know, but he wanted to be prepared! Checking the clock he had a few hours until the vague hour he recalled that he was supposed to be in the park. Wasting no time he sped through his minimal amount of assignments for the day with the grace of a cat on a hot tin roof. Needless to say, the amount of papers send flying across his side of the room would warrant a stern talking-to later on...but that is a problem for future Sunny. Present Sunny is focused on putting on the finest of his winter coats and having an at least somewhat reasonable excuse for sneaking off this late at night (that is, if he gets caught of course). Around 30 minutes to the hour, and after plenty of deliberation, Sunny went through the door to the yard and quietly made his way down the empty town streets towards the meeting spot. With what little time he had remaining, he tried to focus on the bright starry sky to keep his thoughts off the knots twisting in his stomach. That had to end soon however - the walk from his house to the park's pearly gates wasn't very long, even with the added distance he had to climb over the fence. With the last of his bravado, he took a deep breath and shuffled towards the rusty swing set of Faraway.
He seemed to have gotten there first as there were no hallmark traces of Aubrey to be seen, such as her vibrantly colored bow, or her long waves of pink hair, or-
you're doing it again, Sunny snap out of it!
Of course just as he shook himself out of that stupor, Aubrey decided to make her presence known with a dramatic flair that was entirely her. The jostling of the swing's chains nearly caused him to jump out of his skin, and fully caused him to fall onto the ground with a pathetic "oomf". He could faintly hear Aubrey's light snickers at his plight, thank you for being so helpful in this time of need (he couldn't deny the blush spattered on his cheeks however). Lifting himself up with a noncommittal huff, he turned back towards Aubrey still grinning maniacally against the swings' frame. "...Did you call me out here just for that?"
"Pshh- if that's all I wanted I wouldn't have even bothered with the invitation, dork."
Now even Sunny couldn't resist the tiny grin his traitorous face was forming - he wanted to be mad but everything about right now just seemed to make him happy. And before he could even ask what the real reason for this moonlit soiree was for, she started speaking again:
"I wanted to confess, Sunny."
Now that sent him into overdrive.
"I- you- what- how?!?!" - what little part of his rational mind was left after the explosion told him that he was probably making the dumbest face of his life right now. But he didn't care.
"Do you...mean it like that?"
"Yeah, stupid."
"...Are you sure?"
That earned him a punch to the shoulder and a playful scowl - "You callin' me a liar, punk?"
"No, never, I just had to make sure I wasn't dreaming."
"Dumbass."
Sunny was positively over the moon right now, nothing about today (what was left of it at least) or even the rest of the week could bring him down - this had to be the peak of his teenage life. He was so dumbstruck that he missed the guilty look Aubrey sent as they walked hand in hand into the silent night.
