Chapter Text

Kara walked through the double doors of Lena’s office, pushing up on the bridge of her glasses in nervousness.

“Kara, I hadn’t expected you so early,” Lena got up to greet her, “and with food?” She queried, confusion in her voice.

“I didn’t want to take you from your work so I thought I’d bring the food to you.”

“Well, I can’t complain about that now, can I?” Lena flashed her a mischievous smile. Kara put the food on the table as Lena grabbed them some water. They talk about how their day was going and how Cat was growing on Kara. Lena vaguely talks about her business meetings with potential tech companies and new clients. There was a moment of silence as Kara’s attention was drawn to the balcony outside. How did I not see that before?

“I see you have a balcony. Is that your escape?” Kara joked. Lena laughed and got up to open the door for the blonde to walk through.

“Somewhat.” Lena crossed her arms and leaned on the balcony railing. “It’s where I come when I need to step away from all the stress that L-Corp brings.”

“You? I couldn’t see that.” Kara turned round, her back hitting the rail. “You’re brilliant.” Kara looked at her with a shy smile, taking a sip of the water.

“Sometimes we need a break from what we are expected to do.” Kara’s smile lowered to a frown. Things were getting better for Supergirl but she still had so much to learn. There were so many things that Kara had to grasp that she often felt incapable of helping people and being good at her job at the same time. There was also this nagging feeling that was pushing her to get out with it. To tell Lena despite how short their friendship had been but then she thought of how it would affect the CEO. This was how she diverted her thoughts from impending doom. Lying and hiding from Lena was eating her inside and out while she knew that the Luthor didn’t deserve anything less than the truth.

“Lena, I. . .” She let the pause linger in the air. Lena was different, she thought. Lena was making an impact.

“What’s wrong?” The brunette turned to her and came within arms length.

“I’m sorry. I know you prize honesty above all else but I haven’t been completely truthful with you. I could lie and say that it was for your safety but it hasn’t been that way.” Lena stepped back and crossed her arms, looking down and clenching her jaw. Kara pulled the clip from her hair and brought her glasses down, regretful of what she was hiding. “Lena.” She pleaded. “Look at me, please.” Lena stepped back and looked at her. Really looked at her.

“I’m Supergirl.” Lena ran her hand through her hair, mouth agape.

“Why didn’t you tell me sooner?” Her tone was unreadable and it made Kara’s stomach sink.

“I didn’t want you to feel like I was,” Kara pushed the palms of her hands out in front of her as if to stop her, “like I was everyone else. I wanted you to trust me and I know I messed that up by not being upfront and I’m sorry.”

“Why tell me? Even now?” Lena looked in her eyes.

“Our friendship is important to me. I don’t want you to feel like I don’t support you. I know you use your means for good. I know that you support Supergirl and that means a lot to me. I’m so new to all of this and I’m struggling. Seeing my name on headlines as a villain when I can’t conquer things, it--” the blood ran to her face from her anger, “infuriates me. I’m constantly struggling with what I’m doing, how I’m doing, and what that translates for people. Am I making it worse? Better? I know I’m not Superman but, golly, I’m trying. I’m trying my hardest to be the hero that National City needs but I--”

“Kara.” Lena interrupted, putting her hand on the reporter’s forearm, stopping the blonde in her tracks. “You’re doing well. Don’t assume that you aren’t making a difference or that you aren’t helping people. You’re doing your best, that’s all we can expect of you.”

“So, you aren’t mad?” The blonde asked.

“How could I be? You told me, in confidence, your identity while knowing my name. The fact that you shared that with me gives me hope. I never thought that Supergirl and I could ever have a friendship with the history between Superman and Lex. I appreciate your honesty and I’m honored to have your trust and support as Supergirl and as Kara.” Lena turned to lean her elbows on the banister. “I can’t believe that I couldn’t see the resemblance.” Kara chuckled and put her glasses back on.

“It’s okay. It’s not just the glasses. . . “ Kara gave one of her notorious wide, tightlipped smiles. “When I’m Kara, I have to put my hair up and change certain aspects that are relative to the bravado of Supergirl. When I’m Supergirl--the first time--” Kara pushed her hair behind her ear, “I felt like I could be me. I can’t tell you how empowering it was, especially with how hard Cat has been on me and how disappointed Alex was when I saved that plane. It was like I was finally doing something right and I was. . .”

“Free?” Lena added.

“Yeah.” Kara played with the lip of the glass before turning to set it down on the rail. “Is that how you feel with L-Corp?”

“Partially, yes. It’s the first step in my journey of being able to separate myself from the Luthor name and show the world that I’m not my brother.”

“I’m sorry that you have to go through that.” Kara fiddled her thumbs in enclosed hands, trying not to stare at Lena. “I--” Kara bit the inside of her cheek. “I know you’re not who your family is. I see who you are. Kind. Empathetic. Generous. Committed to helping everybody in a different way than I do.” Kara’s smile twitches. “There is something about you, Lena.” She paused, knowing full damn well what it was. “I want to know you better, not just from business type meetings, but maybe you could come to some of our game nights. I want to know who you are,” Kara realized how that sounded and scrambled to find a way to make it platonic, “because I think we could be really good friends. If you want, of course. Gosh--” she sighed, a blush rising to her cheeks. “I feel so dumb right now.” Kara laughed awkwardly through her uneasiness.

“I appreciate your honesty and I’m honored to have your trust and support as Supergirl and as Kara. Thank you for the invitation but you know how much I work and I don’t know your friends--”

“Oh, they don’t bite. Come on! It doesn’t have to be this upcoming one but I think you’d really like it. I need a game partner and you and I could be great!” Kara said with enthusiasm.

“Kara,” the blonde put on her best pouting face, “ugh, I guess I can make an appearance.”

“Yes!” Kara pumped her fist up. “We’re going to make a great team.” She stuck her hand out for Lena to shake and the brunette gave her a shy smile before grabbing her hand.

-------------------------------------------------

Goodness this is imperceptible. Kara whispered in surprise while looking at the narrow pathway around her office that was surrounded with vases of sunflowers. She scanned the bouquets for a card or tag but couldn’t find any so she decided to check her desk.

“Secret admirer?” Kara jumped, almost knocking over a couple of the vases at her feet. “Careful Kiera.” Cat bounced her shoulder off the door jamb so she could appropriately admire the room from within. “You should have seen the poor band of women that rushed up and down the elevators to fill this room.” Kara listened as she tucked her shirt back in and went to look over her desk. “Do you have that article ready?”

“Yes!” Kara scrambled through her drawers to pull out a stack of neatly stapled papers. “I have a hard copy for you to look over and can email it as well.”

“Not needed.” Cat lifted one of the vases to examine. “Push it through, I trust you.” She winked back at her and set the vase down.

“Please feel free to take one--some,” Kara set the article back down, “any.”

“That’s very generous of you. Are these, perhaps, from someone you’re having a quarrel with?”

“I don’t know, why?” Kara said confusedly, shuffling from behind the desk and into the sea of flowers so she could gather the bouquets in her arms to distribute amongst her coworkers.

“You seem a little,” Cat looks over another bunch of sunflowers, “perplexed.” Kara had been, at first. She wasn’t accustomed to receiving flowers and had finally realized that it could potentially be from someone special.

“I’m overwhelmed by the graciousness,” the reporter said carefully, “but I do have work to do.” She met Cat at the doorway.

“Work comes first, but acts like these shouldn’t go unrecognized. Give it some thought, Kiera. It’s not an endangering gesture.” Cat raised an eyebrow and started towards the elevator. Kara felt strange and worried. Strange because she was unsure of whether it was professional to reveal that kind of information to her superior. Worried because if it was who she assumed it was, it would cause a rift between her civilian identity versus Supergirl. She purposefully allowed Cat to leave the floor without her.

She gave out all the bouquets in her arms save for one and briskly walked her way to the roof to fly over to her destination of choice.

-------------------------------------------------

Kara landed in a shrouded alley, making sure that the flowers made the flight. Right. She made her way to the busy street, passing her hand through ruffled hair. A well fashioned businessman held the door open for her and she had to ignore his noticeable stare. The elevator ride was quiet and she appreciated the silence until the man from before had tapped her on the shoulder before running an open palm down her arm.

“I couldn’t help but notice how--” Kara pushed his hand off and didn’t feel the need to turn ‘round.

“I’m not interested,” she looked back to assert herself, “and I would suggest that you shouldn’t touch somebody without their permission.” Her mouth tweaked up in disregard and the man squared his shoulders.

“It was trying to give you a compliment. You don’t have to be such an uptight bitch.” He scoffed and pushed past her when they reached her floor of choice. Worked up, Kara took a breath to settle her nerves. She walked through the threshold of the elevator, watching as the man spoke reverently with Jess.

“Milo Strife.” He said, carefully leaning forward to peer at Jess’ monitor.

“Hi, Jess,” she interrupted, “I’m due with Miss Luthor for that exclusive business proposal we are working on.” Jess gave a confused expression until Kara nodded with wide eyes.

“Oh--yeah, of course. Miss Luthor has been waiting for you. I’m sorry Mr. Strife, it seems Miss Luthor will be busy for the next hour or so. Would you mind waiting? I can get you another appointment for tomorrow, if that works better for you.” The man snarled at the blonde as she strode passed the desk to knock precariously at the door.

“Come in, Jessica.” Kara pushed the door open and hadn’t been recognized till she spoke.

“Y’know,” Lena looked up, “a certain someone has filled my office with flowers.” She matched Kara’s grin and stood.

“It would be amiss of me to say that you don’t have followers, Miss Danvers.” Kara met her with a wholesome hug that lasted more than she had wagered for.

“You didn’t have to do that, Lena.” She recklessly nestled her nose into dark hair, relishing in how Lena fell into her.

“I wanted to. “Plus, what’s the harm in sending a couple of flowers to a friend?” Lena tightened her arms against her best friend before pulling her away, “It’s not everyday that Supergirl saves you.” Their eyes met and the CEO modestly hung her head, keeping her friend at arms length. A couple?

“I’ll always be here to take care of you, I hope you know that.” The blonde looked into her eyes and swallowed. Lena was the epitome of power, geniusness, and kindness. She had had quite the time differentiating the feelings that flirted from professional, to friend, to other. The other that had her friends wondering what their relationship actually was. It hadn’t gone over Alex’s head and that had been the real problem. Days and nights of working with Lena had made their relationship questionable. How Supergirl was particular about committing to a defensive position on any negative stances related to the Luthor. Kara brought the flowers between them, so she could stop looking into her eyes.

“Are you giving the flowers back?” Lena frowned and Kara freaked out, not having expected the outcome.

“No, I wouldn’t do you the dishonor! I just, I--” Really care for you. Kara words she needed to say were lost on her.

“Consider it well deserved, please. I can’t give much in turn for you saving my life.” Lena relinquished her hands from Kara’s shoulders. “Think of it as my appreciation for how you are always there for me when I need you.” The blonde shied away at this.

“You’re my best friend, Lena,” she began, “you’re--” she scraped her thumbnail up and down one of the stems poking out of the vase, “I--I’ve already,” she rubs her face, trying to form the words that were direct but indirect enough to not make a fool of herself.

“Miss Luthor.” Jess interrupted. Oh, thank Rao. she whispered as she turned. “You have a very,” she raised her hands and balled them into fists, “determined business proposal waiting. A Mr. Swift.”

“Thank you, Jess. Please take him to the board room and let Mr. Swift know I will be there shortly.” Jess nodded and closed the door behind her. Lena opened her mouth to speak but Kara beat her to it.

“I’d suggest staying a generous space away from him.” Kara’s hand tightened around the glass, accidentally splintering it from the thought of said man putting hands on Lena.

“Do you know him?” Lena tilted her head.

“No, I don’t but it’s clear he doesn’t understand boundaries.” Kara was fuming internally from the recollection of their recent encounter.

“Wait, what boundaries? Whose?” The brunette’s face and demeanor changed automatically. “What did he do?” Kara explained the situation and she could tell how upset Lena was. Lena hadn’t ever shown the reporter her anger before; this was new and for the second time today, Kara had pondered Lena’s actions.

“I didn’t want to ruin a potential merger or anything, I just thought you should know. I know you can take care of yourself--” Kara attempted to correct herself.

“It’s okay, Kara. I’ll take care of this. Do you mind waiting?” The blonde nodded, finally setting the vase on her best friend’s desk. Lena removed her blazer and the silver cuff links from her shirt so she could roll up her sleeves. Kara watched her neatly fold up the shirt above her elbows and while Lena’s discernible reserved fury was intimidating, she couldn’t help the goosebumps that raised on her skin from how attractive she looked in this moment. Dark hair pulled back into her signature ponytail, eyebrows drawn together in mild frustration, the slight redness in her cheeks from holding her tongue, and the long, nimble fingers that pulled the fabric over fair skin. Sure, Supergirl was strong but Lena made her feel powerless in comparison. “Actually, would you be averse to joining me?” Oh, to see his face. She thought.

“I’m sorry. I already feel like I’ve impeded enough. I didn’t mean to cause any issues, I just wanted you to be safe.”

“Understood. I appreciate that. Give me a moment, then? We can get lunch after. My treat.” Lena transitioned back to her usual self, smiles and everything.

“Of course.” Lena brought a hand to her shoulder as she walked passed. “You’re gonna have to fight me to pay. You’ve done your share, allow me the opportunity to properly thank you.” Lena chuckled to herself and reached for the door.

“I suppose we will see who wins then.” Supergirl playfully fired back and the brunette threw her a coy smile as she left the room.

Kara watched as she closed the door behind her, taking in the suit and the confidence in her walk. Rao, I’m in trouble. She sat and ran her hands along her thighs. Her whole life, she had been uncertain of choices and how they presented themselves. She’d known she was naive and Alex was the first to bring it to light. She wasn’t one to jump to conclusions about how people portray themselves and it has worked as a downturn for her in the long run but Kara wasn’t the least bit disturbed. She’d rather be disappointed in how people came to be rather than having a pessimistic view on everybody’s first impression or personality. She had been firm about Lena with Alex, well, with everybody. A resounding passionate opinion that shook her family and friends. The reporter hadn’t been skeptical of their relationship until her dear sister proclaimed her fiercely biased views of how Lena could potentially be using her. Kara had been taken aback and faced her own sister with the same ferociousness, that was, until the eldest Danvers pointed out the affection between her and Lena through her defensiveness. It was a ruse that Kara had fallen so easily into and she couldn’t guard herself when the questions smacked her in the face. Her effort to make a farce of the insinuations protested against her weren’t graceful enough to convince anyone and she had cut off the conversation by changing topics.

She knew her sister wasn’t foolish enough to believe her but it was what she could muster at the time. This, however, had been the turning point. There was this bond they had that she couldn’t quite explain. It had reminded her of the Kryptonian customs her mother had taught her in her youth. She wasn’t sure why she thought of the slight glistening glyphs that barely shown through the wrists of her parents. She had inquired when they were present and it had brought a soreness to her heart. The wholeness that her mother and father had when inattentive to those around them. The subtle light had reminded her of the unbreakable connection they shared. Her parents had taken her out, hand in hand through the city to administer care packages to the people of Krypton. They used their status to help those in need and made sure to instill those values with Kara. Kara thought of Lena, in that regard. Lena hadn’t relinquished the details of who she had orchestrated funds to but the reporter knew that it wasn’t a short list. There were a plethora of times she sat third party to Lena’s vaguely described donations. Lena was a force she couldn’t ignore and Kara brought her sleeve down to cover any sign that would make it apparent. It would change, she knew, but it would be her words instead. The words of Rao and her family’s customs would persist till then and this, she decided, would be the only thing she would want to hide from Lena.

The door swung open and it brought Kara out of her reverie.

“I’m sorry to keep you waiting. It shouldn’t have been that long but Mr. Strife put up a fight that I had to dissolve.” Lena melted into her seat. “Another thing you saved me from.” Kara pushed up on her glasses with a great, big smile. She couldn’t stop herself from laughing when Lena disclosed the information of the meeting.

“I think you’re the hero for having to deal with that guy.” Lena stopped swirling her chair back and forth and laughed.

“You don’t know what I’d do for you.” Lena said nonchalantly and it made Kara blush profusely, having to hide her smile behind her hand. She was relieved to hear that Lena hadn’t undergone the disrespect she herself had.

“I want you--” Kara’s voice fell and she cleared her throat, the mistake in her tone of speech ringing in her ears. She was embarrassed but couldn’t find it in herself to make it known when Lena smiled at her. Was it her eyes? Her attentiveness? Her relentless drive to uncover and emphasize Kara’s traits? Fuck me. “I mean, I want you to know that the feeling is mutual.” She struggled to look beyond the curve of Lena’s desk when her heartbeat hit her ears. She’s nervous. She swallowed and took the plunge. “You’re one of the people I cherish most.” Lena unrolled her sleeves to keep her continuous thoughts at bay.

“I feel the same way.” Lena , picking up the cufflinks to push through the shirt. Kara grasped her thigh at the nearly unnoticeable lust that passed through the brunette’s eyes.

“So!” Kara said a little louder than she intended to. “Should we get out of here?” Lena looked up from the cuff of her shirt and her heartbeat did that thing again. “I owe you a meal, remember?” Lena laughed and her heart settled.

“You must have forgotten already, lunch is on me. You can choose the place.” She winked at her as pushed the last link through and stood from her seat. “I’ll get a driver ready for us.” She picked the phone up and Kara reached over to stop her.

“I thought, maybe, we could walk?”

“You’re full of surprises, Supergirl. How do you manage?” Kara opened her mouth to say something but heard her speak again. “You have the gift of being so swift that it is nearly unseen to the naked eye and, yet, you decide to walk.” Lena shook her head as she shrugged her blazer back on. “Take me.” She cocked an eyebrow and Kara choked on her own saliva.

“Yup, yes--of course.”

-------------------------------------------------

“You look confused.” Lena said, lifting her double shot of scotch. Kara fervently shook her head.

“No, not at all.” She lied, she’s flabbergasted. To say she’s shocked is an understatement. Alex, her own sister, not telling her about the relationship she had built with Sam was very unlike her.

“You’ve got an idea, I can tell.” Lena tipped the last bit of her drink back and set it down onto the bar table. “It’s in the early stages, Kara. Don’t feel any type of way.”

“Of course, I know my own sister.” Kara pouted in disappointment, taking a few gulps from her glass. Lena watched with a worried face, calling forth the bartender.

“Another double shot of your top shelf scotch and a--”

“Double shot of what I’m already having.” Lena averted her eyes and asked for Kara’s regular. They had spent so much time together in the last few months that the brunette had memorized almost all of Kara's orders; that and she could accurately guess her cravings depending on Supergirl’s mood. It wasn’t much, but the thought didn’t go unnoticed. There weren’t many things that made Supergirl become a bumbling mess and Lena took it as a challenge. Sweet, good natured Kara was an easy target but breaking Supergirl was an absolute delight to see. The indulgent part of her made her want to always make Supergirl blush like that, especially when in uniform.

“I know you’re worried. Tell me why.” The feel of the CEO’s hand covering her’s brought Kara out of her head.

“Alex wouldn’t not tell me what she was feeling.” Lena reached over to hug her, rubbing the plush of her cheek along her jawline.

“You think that, but just consider the idea that maybe she’s not sure yet.” Kara traced lines down the cool glass, watching as the condensation reappeared.

“You’re right. Alex doesn’t typically talk about prospective relationships that she isn’t sure of.” Lena tucked that information away. The urge to consume the remainder of the alien liquor in her cup tempted her but she swirled the cup in her hands instead. “Wait,” she paused, “so, all those times they’ve come and left together, that was a thing? Or their insistence on being gaming partners. . .” She took another drink and looked at the wide array of liquors presented on the shelves.

“Yes,” Lena drew out, “but also take into account that some of those times could have been happenstance.”

“Rao, I’m such an idiot.” Her best friend tightened her hold on her.

“You’re not. They are feeling themselves out.” Kara shook her head.

“What does that even mean?” Lena took another drink as she pulled away.

“It doesn’t mean anything, they’re just getting to know each other.” Kara sighed.

“How didn’t I see this?” Lena looked up in amazement. This was the infamous Supergirl, taken aback from something so insignificant and it had highlighted the lack of attentiveness outside of their evergrowing connection.

“Kara, stop. They are adults and it is their business. It was my mistake to speak about it as if it was known.”

“I’m not opposed.” She waved the bartender over to order a club soda. “I’m sorry. It bothers me because I--” M’gann slid the glass down the table, “Alex tells me everything! W--we have our sister nights and I see her all the time at the DEO.”

“To be fair, I think I’ve had more conversations with you--spent more time with you in the last couple of weeks than you have with Alex.”

“Oh geez, you might be right. It’s been that long.” Lena shrugged her shoulders and checked her watch.

“Do you tell your sister everything that you feel?” The blonde rubbed at the ridge of her brow and Lena observed her mannerisms carefully and curiously. Kara chuckled nervously and began tapping her foot against the bar foot rail.

“Heads up!” M’gann came through the dual-swing door with three full plates. “Sorry for the wait, you’ve got one left but I didn’t want to keep that stomach waiting.” Kara beamed as she gave thanks, her mindfulness of her surroundings melting away as she began to devour the food in front of her. Lena watched with intrigue, wondering if she should suggest getting an actual table so the bar wouldn’t be overcrowded with food but she couldn’t stop smiling at the overexcited Danvers who had been eagerly plucking pieces from all the plates.

“Kara, darling,” she ceased her feasting and she felt chills run down her body; she wasn’t sure if she’d ever get used to Lena calling her that, “let’s get a table so we have more space.” Kara wiped her mouth and nodded. It didn’t take long for the next plate to come out and for all of the plates to empty.

“Who knew that the way to Kara Danvers’ heart was through her stomach.” Her Irish drawl came out and the reporter’s ears perked up. She had wanted to ask about it and, if she could, ask more in depth about her birth mother. Next game night, she decided.

“I’ve always had a big appetite.” Kara beamed, rubbing her hand over her belly.

“I don’t want to worry you but we are a little over what’s considered your lunch break.” The blonde surged forward, scanning the table for her phone only to find it in her pocket. No new notifications. “Don’t worry, you can talk about the new process of clinical trials we’ve been working on in one of your reports to get Cat off your back.”

“I would never! That’s between us. Plus, I have plenty of information to shine light on the brilliant and marvelous Lena Luthor,” she raised her hands to push them out into empty space, “who is making the changes in not only our community, but all of humanity as well.” Lena’s heart panged and she pulled out her wallet to put the tip on the table.

“I’m not the only one accountable for that,” she hid her face behind her hand, “and, thank you. Thank you for believing in me. For working with me.” She tried to laugh, teary eyed. “I’ve never wanted to partner with anybody but I’d be ever thankful to have your continuing partnership.”

“Lena,” the blonde’s soft voice relieved the stiffness in her shoulders but the warm fingers that trailed over her wrist gave her shivers that she failed to disregard, “I am always going to be your partner.”

-------------------------------------------------

“Everything at the DEO is going well, as you know.” Alex fell back into her usual space on the couch.

“Glad to hear it.” Kara poured them both a glass of wine. “How about everything else? How is the dating going?”

“Well, actually, that’s something I’ve been meaning to talk to you about.” Alex brought over a pizza with Kara’s favourite toppings. “I’ve been seeing someone.” The youngest Danvers took a drink to steer clear of her sister reading her face. “Someone we both know.”

Kara kept quiet and feigned ignorance. She had had a lot of time to think about it all and she knew, at the forefront, she wasn’t against her sister dating Sam. It had become a relief, in a way. Sam carried a lot of the same values Lena did and the one thing that was of most importance was that Sam and Alex fit well together and that things were mutual. She knew that it was a small step for Alex and that even though Sam had Ruby, she’d still want a child of her own. Perhaps it was the fear that she was going to lose her sister. There weren’t many people that she could explicitly talk about Supergirl’s issues with and all of that would disappear. Her one and only outlet would be gone and it was beginning to make an affect on how she spoke to others.

“I didn’t see it, at first,” Alex admitted, “but she’s so much like me. Hardworking. Seldom goes without contact. Keeps her family close.” She paused, rubbing at the back of her head. “And she wants kids. I mean, it might not be now, but she does and that’s more than I ever thought I would have after Maggie.”

“Sounds pretty serious.” Kara tucked her legs into the couch cushion.

“It’s--eh. I don’t know. I never know.” She said, exasperated. “How can I be serious with someone that I can’t be completely honest with about DEO affairs?”

“Hey,” Kara put her hand on her sister’s knee, “don’t put yourself down. It’s hard. Having to decide who is worth your honesty and authenticity can be a burden when you know what you want to say, although other people are telling you otherwise or you convince yourself you can’t do it. Trust me, I know.” Kara clinked her glass against the one in Alex’s hand.

“Oh, Kara, I’m so sorry. I didn’t mean--I never meant to make it that way.” Alex resituated herself closer to her sister. “I won’t ever be able to forgive myself for how I put you in a box.”

“No, it’s okay. No hard feelings. I was simply agreeing with you. It’s taken me a long time but I’m learning to be open with people I know I can trust like my choice to tell Lena, Winn, and James.” Alex took a drink when Kara brought up Lena’s name. “So??” Kara nudged her knee against the latters.

“It’s Sam.” Kara pretended to act surprised and Alex narrowed her eyes. “You knew.” The youngest Danvers shifted back uncomfortably, moving her feet onto the floor. “How long have you known?”

“A week?” She said in a high voice, shoulders shrugging up.

“Did we make it obvious? What gave you the indica--” Alex stopped halfway when she pinned it down in her head. “It was Lena, wasn’t it?”

“It may have slipped.” Kara set her wine on the coffee table and opened the pizza box to serve herself.

“Did Sam tell her?”

“Dunno.” She said with a full mouth of food. “Hold on, did you think I couldn’t find out on my own?” Alex shook her hand at her.

“It’s not that, it’s just you’ve been pretty preoccupied lately.” Alex soft-pedaled in order to get the lay of the land.

“Not really. I think you’ve been more preoccupied than I have.” The eldest sister scoffed.

“I barely see you at the DEO and when I do, it’s always business. Business with a smile, of course. I know I’ve been busy too but you’re always working: Catco, the DEO, and with Lena.” Kara snorted.

“I’m expanding my horizons and it’s liberating. It’s nice to not be the muscle all the time. I know I make a difference by being at Catco but this is something else. Working with Lena challenges my mind in a way I didn’t even know I missed.”

“I’m glad that you’re finding happiness in all that you do. You deserve it.” Alex raised her glass to cheers with Kara.

“I’m glad you found Sam. Even if you didn’t tell me upfront.” The redhead playfully pushed at her shoulder.

“I wanted to tell you but I know people can be fickle and I can be over-trusting when it comes to relationships.”

“You and I both.” She sighed. “Tell me more about Sam.” Alex’s eyes lit up as she gushed over her. She told her sister everything, from them exchanging numbers at game night to the small dates they had. She could hear how her heartbeat rose in excitement when she told Kara about the first time Sam had brought Ruby along. She continued to the candlelit dinner that she had made for Sam and explained, in extreme detail, Sam’s reaction. That made her own heart grow tender and like everytime she had the privilege of hearing people speak of their significant others, her mind automatically went to Lena. She’d typically shake the thought away but she surrendered to the emotional journey that flashed through her.

Visions of Lena, particularly in their lab, as she had called it. The spaces of time where Kara’s concentration was broken from the whispers of Lena speaking to herself while observing slides under a microscope that often ventured into the comparison of mismatched data as she simultaneously wrote in her journal. Working with her was easy, almost as if they shared the same brain and when Lena began murmuring her own conceptions of their work, the blonde had found that that was one of the things she had always been drawn to. The way that her forehead creased and how she had changed her shoes when her vexation of not being able to recreate the same data as the experiment previous. How she drew up her hair when thick strands kept falling on the page she was enveloped in when writing procedures or calculations. Her pursed lips, practically mouthing out the numbers after her speech had ended. The cute and nervous smile that came after she caught sight of Kara watching her had been one of her favourites, especially when she had her bottom lip tucked between her teeth.

It had hindered her ability to perform as she normally could and while she should have been analyzing the enzymes and proteins in front of her, she couldn’t stop herself from looking every time. They had both agreed to keep separate so the data wouldn’t be skewed and the ease of having two experiments produced concurrently would prevent excessive trials; however, due to her meticulousness, she had suggested that they work shoulder to shoulder and ruled that they should voice their discoveries. Kara was more than happy to comply and for a period, it had sucked her back into her work until small conversations, fostered by Kara’s announced computations, had brought them closer to discuss how they had both got their answers.

“We’re thinking about two different things and you’re a little frustrated and that’s okay. Think about it chemically. Break it down that way.” Kara drew out the skeletal system of the chemical they were working on as well as the independent variable they were working with. “Look. Here, here, and here we can see the possibilities of how it’s going to react and how it changes depending on which element it reacts with. You’re just looking at the wrong one.” Lena sighed and rubbed her eyes.

“I should know this.” Kara rubbed up her back.

“You do but you also haven’t gotten any sleep. You’ve been yawning all night for the past couple of nights and staying longer than I have. I know you’re getting tired of me telling you that you need your own time but you do need to sleep. And--before you argue with me--you need more than two or three hours.” Lena laughed softly, leaning her head onto the blonde’s shoulder.

“I don’t know what I’d do without you.” Her voice dulled out and Kara, without thought, brought her hand to her shoulder. She kept a light pressure there and practically kissed the crown of her head but kept her lips there for a second. Embarrassed and too stunned to move but there was no response so she let her body relax into Lena.

“Neither do I. Sometimes I think that I’m never going to see anything else--” She recognized the change in her breathing and it hadn’t been anything she’d heard before. “Lena?” No response. “Lena.” Nothing. Kara reached blindly behind her lab partner to find her chair so it wouldn’t slip. She was asleep. She had been sure of it. Her heart rate was lower than her resting bpm and she could hear the soft sounds of her exhales. She stayed stone still, worried that the slightest move would wake her. “Lena?” She tried again.

“Dang it, I was really onto something.” She sighed. “There’s something I’ve known,” she pressed a long and gentle kiss in her hair, “that scares me more than when I told you I am Supergirl. Mostly because I see it,” Kara looked at the bold, bright light that pulsed with her heart, “I see it all the time and I know it’s you.” This is ridiculous, she thought. She didn’t know what was happening between them. More importantly, if she was the only one who felt it. “I’m sorry that I can’t tell you. I never thought I’d fear anything more than revealing my identity but wanting you, knowing that I’ll probably never have you, is far worse.”

The weight on her shoulder made her think of a quick alternative that made her risk it all. Her loft. Kara slowly and carefully brought her into her arms so she could gently lay her on one of the couches against the far wall. Kara used her super speed to clean the lab and put away the projects into their respected places to be preserved. She wiped the tables down and made sure to put Lena’s heels at the wall adjacent to the entrance. She carefully scooped her partner up and found her escape.

Lena had purposefully made sure the cameras looped whenever she and Kara were in the lab, in case there was a breach or Supergirl had to make a quick getaway. Kara had already thought that through, coming in as Supergirl whenever they were due in the lab. She walked through the dimly lit and empty floor to Lena’s office so she could take her leave through the balcony. She managed to lock the door behind her and shot up into the air. It wasn’t a long flight and she was grateful for it. Please be open. Kara opened the sliding door. She would have to talk to Lena about this later. She walked into the kitchen and shut the door behind her. Despite them having been working together for months, Kara had only been here once. For a time, Kara had wondered if Lena had a home of her own with her always being in the lab or her office but, thankfully, Lena had had her over to rework calculations on a previous experiment. Her eyes went back and forth between the hallway and the available couches. What is okay? She knew she would leave but she didn’t want to impose on Lena’s safe space. It was her own, after all. It was a void of trust but she couldn’t just let her sleep on the couch in her own home. Kara took a deep breath and blindingly walked into the hallway to the biggest room of the loft. It was of no surprise to her that the master bedroom was far more simple than anything in the loft. As she walked down the hallway, she noticed that there weren’t any Luthor family pictures on the wall or anything pertaining to her birth mother. No pictures of friends or any of the degrees she’d held. In part, it had made her sad and she wondered if there was anything that she was proud of. Lena’s modesty was presented to her and within her own home. Kara pulled the comforter and sheets aside to set her into bed. She stayed for a little longer than necessary, sitting adjacent to the bed, to make sure the brunette was comfortably asleep. Supergirl set Lena’s phone onto the nightstand and heard it clack against glass and her posture straightened fright. Lena scrunched her face and turned onto her side. Kara slowly moved the phone off the surface to the other side of the bed and slipped it along the linen. She squatted back down to ascertain whether the Luthor was still asleep and her breathing confirmed it. As she stood, her eyes glanced to the wayside, detecting a lone photo frame that was flattened down onto the bedside table. She shouldn’t. She tried to fight her curiosity and failed. She watched Lena’s face as she gingerly lifted the frame from the glass. She breathed out in relief when she had successfully made little to no sound in the retrieval. Kara flipped the object in her hands and was met with both happiness and grief. Happiness that Lena had kept this picture of them together but grief from it having been face down. She had begun to be absorbed in her feelings and put it back in its place. It could have easily been knocked over, she attempted to convince herself. Kara let it leave her mind, clinging onto the reason she was here. She slowly and carefully removed her boots. Lena hadn’t moved an inch, her slumber far too great for any interruption to spoil. The reporter moved the sheets and comforter up to her shoulders and kept her hands pulled tight against the fabric. Face to face with the sleeping beauty that was Lena Luthor. Light penetrated the space and she automatically pulled her sleeves down to cover it but realized that even her super suit couldn’t dull it and resorted to holding her wrists at her thighs. Literally during the worst times. She said in her head.

It was difficult leaving her. It was getting harder every day and this, this was a situation she hadn’t ever expected herself to be in. She shouldn’t be worried but she had brought her here after all, but she couldn’t just leave her. The chance that she couldn’t be there conquered her thoughts. It’s another reason why she stayed so close, if she were to be honest. The constant attempts on her life had put Kara in a panic. Supergirl had directives from the DEO, while Kara had her qualms with Cat, and Kara and Supergirl had the terror of every motion that had been put against the Luthor. She tentatively ghosted her fingers over the fair skin of Lena’s forearm. She wanted to stay. Fear struck her as it generally had and the need to be near her was veiling her rational thinking. It wasn’t right to stay but it also wouldn’t be right to leave without explanation. Could she handle the reality that one day Lena would be taken from her? Her fingertips accidentally grazed up her wrist into her hand and Lena’s hand seized her’s.

“Stay.” Loose fingers fell off her wrist and back onto the bed. She knew it hadn’t meant anything but her heart yearned for her. She told me to stay. She shook her head and made her way out of the room, stopping when she knew that Alex would have questions in the morning. It was late, morning even. Screw what the DEO wanted. Hell, even what Cat wanted. Though, she had only said that because she had already completed and submitted the work to Cat. Alex would come with questions and insinuations that weren’t entirely untrue and she knew she couldn’t lie about it but that was a problem for another day. She kept there, lowering herself against the side of the mattress. It could be great. But it could also end in ruins. Am I ready for either the backlash or the reciprocation? She couldn’t say.

She walked about the couch, taking in the various pieces of art on the walls. The paintings were heavy. They were a show of empowerment, loneliness, and defeat. She stood at a particular piece. A turquoise blue with an assortment of dark reds and oranges that held a third of the whole canvas. Trees sprouted from around what was assumed a body of water to the dark red and yellow strokes that distinguished the parting of sky and water that was relative to a sunset. Everything about it was exquisite, from the colors to the texture. She had wondered if this was how Lena had felt. Alone. She could understand that. Being alienated and treated as an outsider. Working with Lena had shown her many things. How brilliant she was, which was never in question. How she undervalued herself when Kara had shown her different routes to take in research or experiments even if it was all in good faith. More prominently, it was how Lena hid herself. Staying within the bounds of being open without being open. She had only communicated to Kara about the details of her daily life whether it be intimate or not. Trust was hard for her and she knew it; being in her loft had reflected her beliefs and while she was glad the CEO had Sam and herself, there was a sorrow that clenched at her heart from knowing how that feels. She had known that emptiness and loss. It hadn’t hit her before but as she stood there, lightly tracing her fingers over the edges of thick brush strokes, she felt this invisible tie that only added to her suspicions and premonitions. She dropped her head, attempting to look past how she had been hiding her feelings towards her. It was nothing short of being dishonest. Right? She grew uneasy, the weight of her guilt growing beyond what she could hold. I can’t stay here.

She quietly made her way out to the balcony and looked over the street from the balcony. The streets were clear save for a car or two and the city rested in silence. For once, she had hoped that it was her mind that was silent instead. She peered over her shoulder to look back into the loft and convinced herself that this wasn’t the time. She brought her foot back to ascend and as she flew through the air and her mind raced from the “maybes” and “what ifs.”

The memory melted away and it left her empty.

“. . .I don’t know how I feel about it but I think she’s been pretty transparent about how she feels.”

“You should just go for it.” Kara stuffed another piece of pizza into her mouth, evading the fact that she had been mentally and emotionally absent during the conversation.

“Oh, thank goodness.” Alex leaned back and closed her eyes. “I thought I was putting too much thought into everything but I think I will. I might. The signs are there, obviously, if you think the same.” Kara reached her arm over her sister’s shoulders.

“Don’t make the same mistakes I have. It’s important that she knows now rather than later.” Too harsh. “You are one of the most observational people I know. Promise me you’ll go for it.”

“Ugh, thank you, I needed that but it’s hard. I don’t know where to start and I don’t want to make a fool of myself for assuming she might feel the same.” Kara stretched out to grab the wine bottle so she could fill her sister’s glass.

‘Easy. “I want to be honest about something I haven’t told you. I do work for the force but I work in a special covert organization called the Department of Extra-normal Operations. Due to the services we provide, I’ve had to hide my work from my family and friends for a long time and it was devastating when the truth came to light.”’ Alex just stared at her, gears turning in her head. It was almost as if it was a practiced speech.

“That easy, huh?” Kara gulped down the wine in her glass, filling it immediately. “Have you given that speech before or. . .?”

“No.” She said defensively, trying to pass it off with laughter.

“Kara.” Alex said, her voice stern. Her little sister shrunk into the couch, once again stuffing her face with food to avoid what was coming. “You’ve met someone, haven’t you?”

“What? No? I’m speaking from experience.” The blonde slipped her hand between firm thighs so her most obvious quirks wouldn’t show.

“Of the DEO?” She smiled as she resolutely made her case. Alex watched her all the way through, sharp gaze and body turned so she could dissect her explanation. The reporter tried her hardest to feign the emotions that were brought out from what her thoughts kept insisting on. She didn’t want to tell Alex. Alex and Lena had just begun talking because of their linkage to Sam and while her sister was very much inclined to Sam’s perspective, she still had some not so great things on her mind of Lena. Alex’s constant lack of confidence in Lena made her think of how she felt during the crucial times the citizens of National City had thought negatively of Supergirl. In her mind it wasn’t anything different from what the team had initially thought about the Luthor. There were many crossroads between them and she would be right rude to not protect her best friend.

“You feel so far away from me sometimes.” Alex frowned. “I think--I feel like you’re so troubled with something and I hate that. You know I do.” Kara concealed the hurt she felt because it wasn’t anything her sister should worry about. This was her own issue that fell into all the unresolved issues she had within herself.

“I’m doing okay. Cat’s just got me wound up at work.” She lied, again. Alex shifted the conversation and Kara couldn’t rid her mind of her. If anything, there wasn’t anybody else she would rather think of like this and she knew it would always be her. Images of the brunette manifested in her mind, clouding everything in that moment. Clips of Lena played back to back with a striking emotional intensity. It would always be:

Lena.

Lena.

Lena.

-------------------------------------------------

“Are you sure?” Kara worriedly asked, her chin on Lena’s shoulder.

“Kara, you’re already here and you’ve asked me a million times. Yes, I’m sure.”

“‘Cause it’s not too late--” The brunette pulled away from her.

“It’s okay. I’ve already let security know I was going to have guests and gave a full guestlist.”

“Thank you for doing this.” She walked into the loft, setting the basket of food and wine on the nearly full kitchen island. “Y’know, I’m proud of you.” Lena smiled and ducked her head.

“I didn't think I had a chance to make friends with my last name and you, your family, and your friends have made me feel like I was welcome and able to create connections with others. But the thanks go to you.” There was sadness in her voice towards the end of her speech and Kara hugged her.

“You’re worth so much, Lena.” They swayed in each other’s arms. “You just needed a push. I can’t account for that.” Lena laughed.

“There are a lot of things I wouldn’t be without you, Supergirl.” Kara rolled her eyes.

“Please don’t call me that. I’m your friend first and foremost.” The itch climbed from Lena’s hands at her waist to her collarbones to her lips. It was a normal feeling when she was this close with her, when they were connected. The need to press her lips anywhere on her skin was relentless but, alas, she kissed her cheek, as a safety. Her super hearing took in the almost inaudible gasp the brunette had made and her whole body felt it. She was electrified and terrified, at the same time. It had been rude of her to listen in and her inhibitions put her back into the same values that Danver’s family had instilled in her. It was impolite and she had understood that. Eavesdropping was more difficult for her because it wasn’t something she could conceal. There was no worry with x-ray vision considering her lead glasses but the overhearing was something she couldn’t help, at times.

“I couldn’t ask for a better friend.” Kara watched the blush recede from Lena’s face and neck and moved in slowly, eyes dim and want coursing through every fibre of her being before retracting. Her breath shuddered and she removed her hands from Lena. It was too much. All of it. What was she doing? She had been so careful, not taking the opportunities she had to say what she felt or acting on it. All of her thoughts and emotions were persistent. Her fondness was bordering love and she wasn’t sure if she could hide it anymore. Lena wasn’t a friend she wanted to lose and so she tried her best to just be friendly. She couldn’t lose something that had never started and she wasn’t going to allow herself to sabotage another potential relationship or put herself at risk because of her unruly emotions.

“We should probably set up ‘cause J’onn will be here soon.” Lena was the first to leave their embrace. She took off the cellophane from the dishes of food she had ordered for the evening.

‘I prepared for “early.”’ A cocky smile stretched her lips as she turned to the basket Kara left on the counter.

“I got you some scotch but I don’t know what’s best. I know what you like at Al’s Dive Bar but I’m not sure this is good. I hope I picked right, I asked M’gann to make sure but I hope you like it.” She pulled back the plastic to wrap her fingers around the neck of the bottle.

“Balvenie DoubleWood 12 Year.” She smiled as her eyebrows scrunched together. “Thank you but you didn’t have to.” Kara tried to interject but she cut her off, “You’ve given me a family I can believe in. Trust in. And, you,” she chuckled, “you’re the best friend that anyone could ask for.”

“I could say the same.” Kara gave her finger guns but put them down in shame once she realized what she’d done. At this rate, she’d never be able to keep her attention with all the embarrassing things she did.

“You’re so cute.” Lena said, squeezing the blonde’s cheeks together as she walked away to grab a couple of whiskey tumblers from the overhead cupboard. Kara swallowed thickly but shined a bright smile when Lena turned round. “I know you’re used to alien liquor but appease me.” She carefully removed the shrink band with a kitchen knife and poured out a shot into each glass. Kara took the drink that was offered to her and scrunched her nose at the strong smell. “To us.” Lena said, green eyes staring into her blue ones, a smirk clear on her lips. The reporter’s breath hitched and she nodded frantically with a wide grin. “To our research, and,” she paused to reach across the table to meet their glasses, “to our future.” Her composure slipped when she bit slightly at her bottom lip and Kara could swear that it wasn’t just in her mind.

“To our future.” Kara swallowed the drink whole.

“I’ve been meaning to ask you something,” Lena pointed and made a come hither motion at her empty glass, “my memory might be a tad bit foggy but,” she filled her glass again, “did you bring me home the other night?” Kara gulped, knowing this conversation was going to happen one day.

“Lena, I’m so sorry. I didn't mean to violate your trust, I wanted to--” Kara stood up, her hands going wild as she spoke, “you fell asleep on my shoulder and I didn’t want to leave you at L-Corp. I took you to your apartment and left even when you told me to stay.” Lena smiled and stepped closer to her.

“You’re not in trouble, Kara. Thank you. I had put myself through unnecessary extremities and it proved to be inefficient.” She reached for Supergirl’s hand and intertwined their fingers. “Thank you for always doing what’s best for me.” Kara let out the heavy breath she held in from the beginning of her speech. “If I told you to stay, you should have. I’m very sure of what I want.” Her lips twitched up into a thin smile, watching an abashed Kara over the curve of her glass.

The doorbell rang and Kara pulled her hand from Lena’s out of instinct. Lena’s brow furrowed, retracting her hand and watching as the blush in the blonde’s cheeks receded and was replaced by worry. It had hurt the CEO but she didn’t dwell on it, decidedly pulling herself together and going to welcome the guest at the door.

“Hi, come on in.” She suggested as Sam and Alex walked in, hand in hand.

“Hey!” Kara left her glass on the table and went to greet them with a hug. “It’s so nice to see you both.” She dug her chin into Alex’s deltoid because of how obvious she had made everything. Kara could never hide and Lena intercepted to give separate embraces to Alex and Sam.

“We don’t have to make this weird.” Alex whispered to her sister in passing. Lena and Sam caught up while Alex and Kara sat at the island.

“I didn’t mean to make it weird. Sam is great and I’m happy that you’re finally here together as a couple.” The youngest Danvers hugged her sister again.

“Thank you. I love you. I know I don’t say it enough.” Alex looked over her shoulder to her girlfriend. Kara looked back and forth. Her sister was smitten and it didn’t take a scientist to know that. “I really want this one to work.” She said with a tremor in her voice. Sam glanced back to Alex with a wide toothed grin and Kara looked down when Lena’s eyes met hers. There was power in her

“I have a feeling it will.”

-------------------------------------------------

Lena watched as the events unfolded. Kara and Lena rising as the perfect duo who imprisoned Lex and Lillian Luthor for their plans to wipe out the majority of National City. The newspaper headlines show the Super and Luthor within close contact, their hands always linked and when apart, their eyes following each other with endearing smiles. Lena patiently set the control aside as she saw Supergirl and herself work together in unison with the DEO and then she saw, in this universe, Lena buy out the DEO to protect Kara’s identity. They find each other in the work they do together. The tentative touches and emotion-filled glances taking over what they themselves can’t see. The frame transitions to Kara’s apartment.

“Kara.” Alex rubs her forehead. “You and Lena--” She began to ask.

“Defeated the last Algamite!” Kara raises her hands in praise as she preps the food for their next gaming night.

“Kara, please. I’m serious.” Alex comes over and puts one of the baking sheets into the oven. “You can tell me.”

“Tell you what?” Kara nervously pulls the unready macaroni off the stove to strain in the sink.

“You really shouldn’t be cooking.” Alex reaches over and grabs the pot from her hands to set back onto the fire. Kara stands oblivious at the sink and settles the strainer back down onto the counter.

“I know,” she huffs, “I’m still learning.” Kara heats the boiling pot with her heat vision. “There, is that good?” Alex raises the pot from the stove to stare at her sister.

“Really?” Alex shakes her head and moves over to strain the pasta.

“What? Everyone is coming soon and you know that J’onn is always the first.” Kara checks on the oven, knowing full well that the meat isn't done.

“Can you listen to me for a minute?” Kara’s ears perked up. “What’s going on between you and Lena?” Kara’s body is covered in chills as she lets the oven door slam shut. “Damnit, Kara!”

“I’m sorry!” Kara’s shoulders slumped and Alex calmed herself down.

“You’re not ready for this conversation at all, are you?”

“No.” She mumbled and leaned against the counter, letting her fingers tap against the tabletop. “Why do we even have to have it?”

“You know, I felt the same way, remember? I was torn and I know it’s not easy.” Her mind went back to those uncertain moments.. “I was confused and afraid of everything that came with me acknowledging that I was gay.”

“It’s not the same, Alex. I don’t know what I am but I know that I have feelings for Lena. I don’t feel shame in it. This was never a problem on Krypton. A lot of the elders had same sex partners.” Kara sighed. “But this is Lena. Gosh, I don’t know what I’m doing.”

“Hey, hey. It’s okay, I’m sorry. You’re not doing anything wrong.” Alex came to her side and put her arm around her sister. “You were there for me during my time with Maggie, let me be here for you.”

“How did you even know? How can I be absolutely sure that Lena feels the same way?” Kara raised her face from shielding hands and Alex gave her a knowing look.

“Really?” Alex gawked at her. “With the eyes you have been giving each other since I met Sam--” Kara looked at her with a questionable stare. “Ooookay. We are that oblivious, huh?” Alex grasped more firmly on her shoulder.

“I’m not oblivious, Alex.” Kara raised her hands in defense and scoffed. “I notice things!”

“Uh huh. Like what?” Alex turned to stand in front of Kara, eyes slitted in disagreement.

“Like--like,” her hands waved in the middle of them both, “Lena is naturally affectionate and she cares about the friends she has because she feels like she can’t trust most people.”

“And how long did it take for her to warm up to all of us?” Alex deadpanned.

“It’s not the same! She feels safe in our company and--and--” The agent shakes her head from the common disregard of Lena’s feelings for her sister.

“Yet, she’s only affectionate with you?” She cuts her off and Kara’s face scrunches up. “Look, if you’re not ready, it’s okay. Just know that you can come to me when you are. I love you.” Alex brings her hands up to Supergirl’s shoulders. “I’ll always be here for you.” Kara chuckles slightly and looks down.

“I’m just not sure she feels the same way and I already feel like--” Kara rubs at her face, taking in a breath to adequately state her feelings. “Like--” A knock at the door draws their attention and Kara is the first to leap out of their embrace.

“Lena!” Her wide grin meets the CEO’s.

“I brought an extra bottle this time, it’s a great year and I know you love white.” Lena matches her enthusiasm, looking down to show her the labels of the wine bottles.

“You didn’t have to. Everything you bring is always great!” Alex turned and rolled her eyes.

“Of course she would.” The eldest Danvers muttered below her breath. It wasn’t that she didn’t like Lena, not at all, it was the clear indications she kept giving that just made Alex want to push them together already. She knew it could be confusing reading someone’s social cues but it was right in front of everyone’s faces. She wanted Kara to be happy and seeing her sister tiptoe around Lena and her own feelings was troubling. She knew Kara better than anybody and she knew that there was a great chance that the blonde would bury this, just as she had all of her other previous potential relationships.

“We did run short last time and I made sure to make up for the deficit.” Kara laughed nervously, fully expecting Alex to probe into their after hours time. The reporter took her coat and Lena made herself comfortable, opening one of the reds she had brought.

-------------------------------------------------

The night played on with Lena and Kara decimating everybody in their path. In between wins they either shared high-fives that ended with their fingers interlacing, soft and reassuring hands on thighs, or the occasional lip bite whilst they had made the last move to victory. Alex kept focused on their mannerisms until Sam nudged her out of it.

Lena caught the small attempts at flirting James was throwing Kara’s way and it agitated her. Since when had James been in her orbit?

With the night well and done, Kara walked out her game partner and their adversaries. They waved “bye” and all went on their way to the elevator where everybody had entered save for Lena, excusing herself because she had “forgotten” something. The doors to the elevator closed and Alex leaned her head onto Sam’s shoulder and pouted.

“Oh stop it.” Sam whispers as she pats at her hip.

“Kara doesn’t even see what’s happening in front of her.” Sam laughs wholeheartedly and the group glances in their direction. They say “sorry” in unison.

“If she doesn’t figure it out, Lena will show her.” Alex lifted her head and covered her eyes with her hands.

“As much as I appreciate you saying that, I would rather not have those thoughts give way to things I don’t want to see.”

“You seriously expected me to not divulge her--”

“No, no. STOP.” She says louder than she needs. The team looks at them again. “Sorry.” Alex frowns and falls back onto Sam.

“Listen, Kara can handle her own. Lena’s been giving signs for a while now and I know that you know that they both have been giving each other signs. Probably way before I came along.”

“What? No. Have you met Kara?’ She’s a lost puppy when it comes to Lena.”

“Lost enough to let their relationship flourish?”

“I’m not talking about that. That comes naturally. Kara doesn’t see--she doesn’t have gaydar. That’s what it is! She can’t see it at all.”

“That’s impossible.”

“No, it’s true.”

“Are you sure? Babe, have you seen how she looks at Lena?”

“Looks can be perceived in a multitude of ways.” Sam rolled her eyes.

“I love that you give Kara’s embarrassing mannerisms the benefit of the doubt but I want you to see how they interact together.” Their friends awkwardly exited the elevator and Sam pulled Alex in when she tried to leave, watching as the doors closed. “You both react the same. I know where Kara stands because I’ve seen you.” Sam pulled Alex tight to her hip. “And, I’ve seen Lena,” she turned the shorter girl round and pressed Alex’s body up against the side of the elevator, “she looks at your sister in the same way when you want to be alone with me.” Now winded, the agent forgot the contents of their discussion and ran her hands up her girlfriend’s hips.

“Perhaps,” Sam forcefully pulled her hands behind her back, “instead,” the taller woman kissed down her neck, “we should talk about how incredibly hot you are right now.” The brunette smirked and went in for a kiss.

-------------------------------------------------

Kara could hear the sound of Lena’s footfalls and it was a sound that drew her attention once she had learned it. Lena stood at the door for an absurd amount of time now, her mind trying to mathematically calculate the outcomes and finding that the greater portion would be in her arena whereas the other would cause issues, if not destroy their relationship. 60/40. 60/40 was still a devastating possibility, however, the blonde hadn’t shied away from her glances. If anything, they had grown closer despite the short relationships Kara had had with men. Lena had convinced herself this was different. No longer was it only Lena that snuck glances and got tongue tied and she wondered if she simply hadn’t paid enough attention before. She’d sometimes catch her looking at her longingly from a distance or her eyes dropped to her lips during a discussion. Soft gazes slowly became careful touches being well received and reciprocated. There was reason and somewhere in her mind she had eliminated the odds instead of over analyzing. Yes, there was a chance that Kara wouldn’t respond in the way she had hoped but the brunette had been used to taking risks. This was no different. Lena rubbed at her temples.

Kara nearly paced a hole into the hardwood from going back and forth, thinking of whether or not she should go and talk to Lena. Perhaps it hadn’t been Lena who had walked back into the hall but she didn’t hear a door open or close. She thought of the actions and repercussions of her going and finding Lena at that moment and they spread wide in her mind, like the roots in a flower. She withheld her need to run out by putting the dishes away as a distraction but she still kept her attention to the door, just in case. And then, there it was. The light pitter patter had grown loud in her ears and emotion welled in her chest. It was her. While relieved, excitement and nervousness took over any sense of calmness in her body. Why hasn’t she knocked?

Lena lifted her enclosed fist to the door, taking a second to pull herself out of her head when the door opened and her heart stopped, eyes meeting dark blue ones.

“I’m sorry for over extending my visit but I have something I really need to talk to you about.” Kara pressed her lips into a smile and stepped aside to let her in.

“You’re always welcome, you know that. Plus, I can’t polish off the bottle you brought by myself.” Lena laughed under her breath and stood with her back turned to Kara and exhausted her anxiety by fiddling with the buttons of her shirt. This wasn’t the first time she felt bold enough to push her feelings to the surface. The high of having Supergirl within reach for over a couple of hours was wearing thin and fast. It had been a race in their most recent encounters. A question of how she should assert herself. Should she straight out say it or act on it on a random occasion? Kara’s demeanor changed whenever she made an advance and that hadn’t come differently in all the times she had tried to be indirect about it. Kara had been uneasy either way and it put her off. Perhaps she had been reaching, she thought. Must’ve been. Although she wanted to enjoy the extra time she had with her best friend, there were a lot of questions she wanted to ask, outside of their relationship, so she could understand not only how Kara felt but also the motives James had.

The slight hope she had fell from her face and she chastised herself for being too worried to ask about Kara’s feelings. She knew her, yet, she couldn’t evaluate her feelings as to what she wanted. She had been so in her own head, not taking in anything that was around her and when she finally turned round she could see the worry in her eyes. Eyebrows furrowed, lips parted, and fists clenched. In some way, it was empowering for Lena. It felt mutual, from what she could tell but she had been wrong before. She walked towards her, trying to maintain a confident stride while sustaining eye contact. She brought her hands to Supergirl’s shoulders and up to her neck when she saw the gasp and flushed cheeks.

“There’s something,” she raised her thumb up the length of her neck and Kara grew more flushed, “about you that you’re not telling me. Kara’s eyes began to get clouded with lust and she took the chance. She let her thumb slip up her jaw line as if to be indirect but brought her finger up her chin to her bottom lip. The reporter shook the chills off of her skin. It was borderline sinful what Lena was capable of and after weeks of longing, she couldn’t lie to her.

“There might be something.” She said and cursed herself for saying it. How she felt toward lLena was no secret, at this point. But it was hard. Here was this woman, so well versed in her craft but also, while maintaining competitiveness, appreciating and accepting those who work with her. She never got frustrated or had expectations beyond the scope of their experiments and she was welcoming, no matter how tired she was.

“Might?” She chuckled, settling her hands around the Super’s neck which caused another reaction. “Right. You might.”
