Chapter Text
Days passed and Denki spent them trying to avoid those two to the best of his ability.
He brushed off hanging out with the Bakusquad because Kyoka and Hitoshi were going to be there. He ignored the sad and concerned stares from his friends when he kept declining. He just didn’t want to make things awkward for anyone so he kept avoiding, avoiding, avoiding.
Sero being his best friend, automatically noticed there was something wrong. So after a night of hugs, tears, and many boxes of tissues, Denki told him what happened.
Sero had hugged him and said, “None of this is your fault. Their decisions are their own and they shouldn’t have put you in the middle of everything”
Talking with Sero made Denki feel better, so he listened and the guilt eventually started to fade.
It was still their, but duller now. And duller was better than nothing right?
Things had started to go back to normal. But things felt absent without Hitoshi and Kyoka. He still avoided the... couple? Friends? Acquaintances? He doesn’t know if they broke up or not. Well, he avoided them like the plague. Kyoka and Hitoshi tried to talk to him without fail but he brushed it off every time, running off as soon as he could.
It almost made Denki angry. Did they expect him to just act like nothing happened? As if Hitoshi and Kyoka didn’t just cheat on each other with the same person? It still made him feel sick knowing that he was a part of this.
The issue was that, after all that happened, he still had feelings for the both of them. It made him feel awful and betrayed with his inner conscience for allowing such silly feelings.
One day, Denki was walking towards the entrance of the dorm building when Sero came bounding out of the doors.
“Kami! I was just looking for you!”
Denki smiled at his friend, happy to see him, “What’s up bro?”
Sero put his hands on Denki’s shoulders, staring at him with a serious expression that made him uneasy. What could this be about?
“You have to go to the roof. Now. It’s important and I promise to you that no matter what it seems, it will be worth your while” Sero said seriously, clapping him on the back and then walking past to leave.
Denki let him go. He was confused but he trusted his best friend so he made his way into the building. As Denki waved to passing classmates, he climbed the stairs to the roof.
Upon opening the door, his heart sank. In front of him he saw the two he had been avoiding. They both looked nervous, holding hands and talking quietly. Kyoka fiddled with her earjack like she always did, and Hitoshi seemed like he was trying to reassure her.
Denki didn’t care if this was “worth his while”, he felt betrayed! He started to leave but they noticed him.
“Denks wait!” Kyoka held out a hand to stop him. She looked almost sad and it made his heart twinge with regret, “Please… just hear us out okay?”
Denki stood still, lips pressed in a thin line. He made no more movements to leave but he made no movements to stay either.
Hitoshi finally spoke, letting go of Kyoka’s hand, “Can you listen to what we have to say and then decide whether or not you can forgive us?”
Denki felt a lump in his throat and he nodded, afraid to speak in fear of what he would say. He stepped out of the doorway and closed it, walking forwards so he was right in front of them both.
He crossed his arms over his chest, trying to appear as if he didn’t care or like this was nothing to him. Channeling his inner Bakugo, he said in the roughest voice he could manage, “Alright. Don’t make me regret this”
Denki visibly saw the two relax. Tension eased in Hitoshi’s shoulders and Kyoka audibly sighed in relief. He felt guilty as he realized how worried he probably made them.
Wait. He didn’t do anything wrong. He shouldn’t feel bad.
“First of all we want to say that we’re really sorry for making you think that you had to choose between us” Kyoka started, flashing a sympathetic smile.
Hitoshi nodded in agreement, rubbing the back of his neck nervously, “Yes that was never our intention. We had no idea that you had no clue”
Denki’s brow furrowed and he raised one eyebrow, “Had no clue about what?”
“Do you know what polyamory is?” Kyoka asked him.
“Hmm” Denki pondered. The phrase sounded familiar to him, sure, but he has no idea what it is or what it means. He shook his head as a no.
“It’s the opposite of monogamous” Kyoka continued, waving her hands while she talked, “Basically meaning being open to or being in a relationship with more than one person at a time”
“It’s not cheating though” Hitoshi clarified, “It’s only cheating if you don’t tell your partner that you’re dating other people. A lot of consent and communication is involved to make it work”
“Make sense?” Kyoka asked.
“Yeah” Denki answered, still confused, “But what does that have to do with-”
Oh.
OH.
The realization hit him like a firetruck and suddenly everything made sense. They thought he knew! That’s why they confessed and flirted and made all these moves on him! That’s why they were still together! And-
And Denki made a complete fool of himself.
He turned bright red and he squeaked, covering his tomato-face with his hands. Stupid! Stupid! Stupid!
“I’m so sorry! I just assumed that you two were cheating on each other- Ah I’m so stupid!” Denki rambled, embarrassment clawing at his voice and movements.
He heard a deep chuckle and felt soft, gentle hands remove his from his face.
Denki stared into the eyes of an amused Kyoka, a smirk tugging at her lips. She looked like she wanted to tease him but she held it back.
“Denks you’re not stupid” Kyoka breathed a short laugh, smiling at him, “You were just missing the right information for it all to make sense. Not your fault”
Denki beamed at the two, face still red but no longer as embarrassed.
Hitoshi bumped Kyoka with his shoulder, “Love, don’t forget…”, he said, raising her eyebrows at her with a knowing look.
Kyoka’s eyes lit up and she let go of Denki’s hands, “Ah yes! Right, right”, she said, hurriedly pulling her bag into her hands to rummage through it.
Denki quickly glanced at Hitoshi, an unmistakable fondness burned in his eyes.
He smiled to himself.
“There!” Kyoka exclaimed, pulling out two bright yellow dandelions. She kept one for herself and handed the other to Hitoshi. Smiling brightly, both of them held out the dandelions to Denki.
Denki sat there, like a lovestruck idiot, rendered speechless. He knew what this meant, after all it meant the world to him. He felt like he was shortcurciting, minus the pain of course, and just stared at the dandelions before him.
“We know how much dandelions mean to you…” Hitoshi said softly, and Denki looked up at him in awe, “But we both care about you. So if you want, would you like to be a part of our relationship?”
Denki’s heart burst and overwhelming happiness zipped from head to toe. He jumped forward, shouting yes and pulling them both in for a hug.
He turned to Kyoka, pecked her on the lips and then turned and did the same to Hitoshi. When he pulled back, they both were blushing and staring at Denki with shocked expressions.
Denki howled with laughter, “Aw~ you two are blushing, how cute!”, he teased.
Hitoshi blushed even more at that statement and stared at his shoes to hide his red face. Kyoka huffed and punched Denki’s shoulder lightly with a laugh.
They all stayed up on the roof for a while, talking about their boundaries and their relationship until the sun went down. Hand in hand, the three left the roof to tell their friends of the happy news.
In their second year, Denki’s partners surprised him with a fully regrown dandelion field. This field special to the three of them and their love for each other.
And Denki was so very happy.
