Chapter Text

"Please join me in welcoming to the Cave stage, the Singers!" The announcer bellowed.

Mary Singer stood center stage, flanked by her two sisters on either side. They bowed together, hand in hand, then split for their various instruments. Becky Singer, the oldest, picked up her bass. Jenny, the middle child, sat down behind the drum kit. Mary grabbed her guitar. They counted to four in unison.

In perfect harmony, they performed "Roll Over Beethoven," a Chuck Berry song remade by the Beatles. It was edgy and electrifying. The whole crowd jumped to their feet and danced until their feet blistered. Mary lowered her voice to hit notes written for men, and her voice was sultry and sexy. All three sisters wore suits, much like the Beatles did, but they were not matching in that they each wore their outfit in ways to compliment their personalities. That meant that Mary's blouse was unbuttoned enough to expose cleavage beneath her guitar. Becky and Jenny, who were married, wore their shirts with more modesty but looked attractive all the same.

In the audience, Jet sat at one of the tables, bopping his head to the music. Beside him was a pretty, freckled redhead with bright green eyes and a petite figure. His hand rested on the small bump of her belly. Even from far away, Mary could see his joyous grin; it was a smile she'd never been able to coax out of him. She could not have been happier for them.

After their set concluded, Mary dashed off stage and into Micky's open arms. They shared a loving hug and a quick kiss. Mary was giddy from the adrenaline rush of the performance. Micky had the nervous energy common for the minutes before a show. He congratulated her for a great spot, and she wished the Monkees luck on theirs. But it wasn't even necessary. They would nail their songs just like they always did. Mary scribbled notes for the column she wrote critiquing local bands in the newspaper. The Monkees always got well deserved rave reviews.

"Shades of Grey" was moving and honest. The crowd swooned for "Take a Giant Step''. "Mary Mary", well, that was the most popular piece of the night.

Notes:

"But today there is no day or night, today there is no dark or light. Today there is no black or white, only Shades of Grey."
