Chapter Text
"If you're so inclined, let's take a ride tonight...
So then maybe if the stars align,
We'll fix our minds on another tangent.
And it's kinda like impossible to top this at all..."
Mercedes burst through Klaine's door (her nickname for her favorite OTP), stepped right up to the CD player, placed the 'Butterfly' CD in the contraption, and immediately cued it up to track number 4. The melodic first notes of "The Roof (Back in Time)" started blaring through the speakers. It was then that Mercedes finally released her breath. She turned to see her friends staring at her with slack jaw expressions wondering what the hell is happening.
"I have a date - non-date - tomorrow night". The words tumbled out.
Kurt blinked twice, then once again before speaking. "... A date?" His shocked expression painted on his face.
"Yes, and I know. And let me explain. And... is this a bad idea?" Mercedes questioned.
"Absolutely not. You're amazing. And we need details. Immediately." Blaine stated.
Mercedes walked over to the wine station located on the kitchen counter, poured herself a glass of Big Bold Red, and relayed the entire story from start to finish.
"Mercedes, this is fate! Serendipity if you will!" Kurt finally let his expression relax and his mood shifted to exhilaration. "I have been an advocate for 'Team - let's get Mercedes a man' for quite some time. I mean , the whole showing up at your place seems a bit off putting, but if you trust him, I trust you." This was all Mercedes needed to hear. Her intuition was one of her best assets and her gut was telling her to live a little. Take a chance. She happily ate, drank, and comforted herself with the notion that she was finally moving forward. For the first time since Shane, she would allow herself to consider possibilities.
The next night, after a full day of shopping with Kurt and Blaine, and deciding that everything they picked out was way too much for this "non-date", Mercedes found herself questioning her outfit for the 17th time. Checking the time, she noted that it was exactly 7:53 pm. It'd take her all of 20 seconds to walk out the door and see if Sam was on time. Would 7 minutes be enough time to change again? And then maybe once more? What about this hair - are we still doing the half up, half down look? Maybe she should just go with her signature loose curls? Or a hat? Why? Why was this so freakin' hard?! At that moment, her phone buzzed. She checked and saw a new message from Kurt:
"The hair is fine. The outfit is perfect. Stop over thinking it."
Yup. Her bestie knew her all too well. She recalled the brief feeling of confidence she felt in speaking with Sam and realized she may have the upper hand here. She slipped on her J's, grabbed her clutch, and headed out the door. If he wasn't there right at 8pm, his loss. Period. Before the door clicked behind her, she dashed back inside of her apartment, glanced at her phone and noted it was exactly 7:59PM. 'Can't be too thirsty' she chuckled to herself. She headed toward her own liquor cabinet, poured herself a quick shot, took a deep breath and stepped outside. Tonight is going to be a good night. She'd make sure of it.
As she opened the glass door to her apartment complex and stepped out, she saw Sam revving up his motorcycle, ready to take her and flee into the night. To be honest, Mercedes was into it.
"But I won't think too much...So c'mon and feel my touch...
It wasn't really much at all
Just a little sensitivity of the soul..."
