Chapter Text
They didn’t talk about last night, and Katsuki didn’t ask him to. Shoto never had to tell the ash blonde what had happened in his nightmare. Not that he could.
Each new day of school, Shoto learned something new. For instance, English is even harder when you’re already trying to learn Japanese, or that one of the teachers had taken an interest in you, but not necessarily in a good way. His name was Aizawa and Todoroki could swear that man had eyes in the back of his head.
Shoto wasn’t sure what to think of him.
Todoroki had finally gotten used to wheeling around. It was kinda fun when there were little slopes. Katsuki usually rolled his eyes at him, but he also had some hint of an amused smile when he did.
The days passed. Well not that many, actually. Just two.
He learned more and more with Yaoyorozu, but whenever he left Bakugo was always angry. Shoto wasn’t sure why, but maybe he'll find out eventually.
One day, Shoto discovered something. Television. Romantic comedies to be exact. And it made him start to think.
What if he did that with Bakugo?
Well, apparently the first thing Shoto could do is go on walks with Katsuki. You were supposed to hold hands and walk away into the sunset with people gloriously singing beautiful and dramatic serenades. Easy, nothing to it.
However… Todoroki could not walk because he’s a fish. Fish cannot walk. That in itself presented a bit of a problem.
“Katsuki! Katsuki!” The fish exclaimed while splashing in the water. The aforementioned turned his head idly. “Hmm…?” He asked lazily.
Shoto’s tail wagged like a dog, spraying water straight in the face. Bakugo wiped his face in slight annoyance. “ Walk ! Outside !” Shoto rushed excitedly in his best Japanese he could muster. “You can’t walk, stupid fish.” He mumbled, returning to whatever was on his phone screen.
Todoroki was afraid of this, but he had a plan! “Katsuki, push me!” Bakugo blinked, still staring at his phone. “Sure bud, maybe later.” Well the fish boy certainly didn’t expect that answer. Nor did he know what that meant. “Later…?” He wondered out loud. “Mhm, later.” That did not help. “What later mean?” Shoto asked. “Nice.” Bakugo complimented mindlessly. The merboy frowned. “Katsuki!” Todoroki exclaimed. The ash blonde didn’t answer. A moment passed and he finally said something. “You know what, I’ll be back later.” Bakugo’s eyes never left his phone as Katsuki ruffled the fish boy’s hair.
“ Wait!”
The door closed.
Todoroki swam around, clearly upset. Why did Katsuki just ignore him like that, and then leave?? He did not like it.
A little while passed, and the fish just grew more frustrated.
Eventually his favorite person came by, no not Bakugou, the fish was still mad at him. His favorite redhead, Kirishima! Kirishima was best. Better than Katsuki.
“Kirishima!” Todoroki exclaimed. “Hey man! What’s up?” Kirishima asked. “Mmm… Katsuki ignore me…” he muttered unhappily. Kirishima quirked his eyebrows. “How so?!”
And that, my friends, is how Shoto ranted for a whole hour about Bakugo Katsuki.

Bakugo rubbed his temples. His head was pounding and he was exhausted. And he doubted staring at his phone was helping. Last night he had stayed wide awake, ready to comfort and protect his fish from any more nightmares. He had refused to let anything stop him, especially not sleep. He had also been nonstop worrying if his pain was caused by something he did or his absence that night.
The ash blonde padded down a trail of Jacaranda trees. Wait. Hadn’t his fish said something to him?? Hadn’t he wanted to do something? Katsuki shook his head. His brain wasn’t working like it should. He made his way to the walkway near the beach. The beach… What did his fish like to eat? He knew he liked to eat soba, especially the cold kind. Katsuki had learned that recently when it was his turn to make dinner one day.
No one occupied the beach, so the boy plodded down to the rocks, near the sand. Maybe he should take his fish… No, that wouldn’t be a good idea. The stupid pretty fish, he would- he would just…….. just s-swim away. The thought of it made the boy tremble slightly. His breath hitched. Why did that worry him?! Was there something wrong with him? He pulled at his hair and started pacing. Why was he getting so worked up?
Something glittered under the water’s surface. It was white, and red! He immediately thrust his hand into the water and dove in. The water was freezing, but he managed to grasp the red and white object. He retracted his hand out of the water and realized that what he had was a white fish, and as Katsuki looked down he spotted bright red coral.
He dragged his sorry wet self out of the water and onto the rocks. Bakugo stood there shaking, dripping wet. The ash blonde sat there in frustrated thought for only a second before he heard his phone ding. Katsuki wiped his hand on his pants before shakily reaching for his phone which was still on the rocks. He glanced at the screen; it was a message from Shitty Hair. He opened it hesitantly and stared at the picture.
The picture was of Kirishima, Yaoyorozu and Shoto. Together. Smiling. Underneath there was a text.
Shitty Hair: Hey bakubro! Just studying with Todoroki! u wanna come? I swear it’s not as boring as it sounds it’s actually really fun! See u there hopefully!
Their arms were wrapped around each other while Kirishima held out the phone. The fish was squished in between the both of them. His lips were stretched across his face, showing his teeth. It was the most blinding grin he had ever seen. But it wasn’t because of him, Bakugo. Nor was it for him, Katsuki.
A tormented, deranged and strangled scream escaped the young boy's lips. The whole world seemed to ring in silence at the sound.
Katsuki, still dripping wet, torqued his arm back, and flung his phone across the ocean accompanied by a powerful blast. The sun hit it just so it twinkled in the light for just a moment before disappearing along with the photo.
