Chapter 9
Apple ran out of those doors and kept on running until she collapsed on the crest of a hill and sat up. Surrounded by the dark of the night, the light of the stars was all that was there. She pressed her hands to her face. Raven had just kissed her. She couldn't believe it. All those months of yearning to kiss her but being afraid of the confession. Of facing the truth. She could feel infinity pressing her from all sides....
She heard thundering footsteps behind her. She had been followed. Raven's presence was announced by a crashing of contact. She threw herself onto her knees, behind Apple and wrapped her arms around her. Raven's breathing was unsteady and her chin rested on Apple's shoulder. Her arms squeezed tight around Apple's waist but Apple couldn't turn, wouldn't turn and looked straight ahead. Raven's silent crying, her shaking and trembling, tore Apple in two.
"Forgive me" Raven's whisper broke her. It occured to Apple that she had never seen Raven this vulnerable, not even in her room. Raven sobbed when Apple remained motionless.
The truth.
"I need you." Raven held her breath.
"These past few months, everything has changed. Since our stars collided you are what I draw life from. You are what I breathe for. But I don't know what-I don't know how....I've never felt this before..."
"I love you." That was the truth. Apple felt as though her heart had been stripped bare and her defences lay down. That was it.
Raven was silent. Apple could feel Raven's body against hers, shaking and heaving. She thought Raven was crying but then she heard something....that little snort.
"Are you...laughing?" Apple was shocked. Raven didn't say anything, she was laughing too hard. Apple finally turned to face Raven and tackled her to the ground. The dewy grass tickled her as she interrogated Raven. The shock of seeing her face threw Apple a little, something stirred deep inside her and she softened.
"I am literally professing my love for you, and you're laughing." Raven even had tears streaming down her face.
"No no these are tears of shocked joy. I never would have thought that you felt the same-"
"Wait so you feel the same back?"
Raven laughed again, with that little snort that made Apple's heart skip. She wiped her eyes.
"Yes Apple, I love you too."
And with those words Apple cupped Raven's cheeks and drew her in, pausing before her lips touched Raven's. It was in that moment that something clicked in her heart, like a puzzle piece that had long been missing was now found. Raven had been Apple's final puzzle piece. She had been what was missing in Apple's life. She kissed Raven's lips slowly, drinking in her plum taste, her perfume intoxicating and heady. Raven's fingers threaded her hair and wrapped around the back of her neck. Raven opened her fiery eyes with a hungry expression in them. The kiss became greedier. Raven deepened the kiss by opening her mouth and slipping her tongue into Apple's mouth. Apple's breath quickened. Raven's teeth grazed Apple's bottom lip and- Raven had pulled away, leaving a hot trail of kisses down Apple's neck. Raven grinned.
"You're such a tease!" Apple was in a fitful fury as she threw grass at Raven. Raven laughed again.
"And you're wonderful" was the reply.
"Don't worry princess there will be plenty of time for that."
For now Apple was happy with Raven lying next to her, they faced eachother, looked at the other like they could never get enough. They didn't get up, an acknoledgement between them. They just held eachother long into the night, and slept under the summer stars.
Apple woke up with Raven's arms around her surrounded by warm sun. She turned to Raven and gently kissed the tip of her nose to wake her up. Raven saw her and let out a contented sigh, then frowned.
"But Apple, what about your destiny?" There was genuine concern in her eyes and Apple smiled.
"Screw that. You're my destiny"
