Chapter Text
Kanao was ready to do it. After 2 weeks of preparing (which was mostly practice confessing in the mirror) she was finally ready. School had just ended and now Kanao was taking a short cut to the 3 year junior high area so she could talk with Nezuko alone before she met up with the others. Nezuko was walking down the hall when Kanao saw her.
“Nezuko-chan!” Kanao called out.
“Kanao!” Nezuko called and ran up to her. Kanao was confused when she saw Nezuko’s eyes tearing up.
“Kanao I’m so sorry!” Nezuko blurted out, tears were rolling down her eyes. Kanao didn't know what Nezuko was apologizing for, she didn’t do anything wrong.
“I don’t understand, why are you apologizing?” Kanao asked gently to not come as rude or cold.
“It’s just you’ve been avoiding me a lot lately and it must’ve been because of something I did right?” Nezuko said through the tears.
“What? No! You didn't do anything wrong!” Kanao said, panicking as she took Nezuko’s hands in hers.
“I- didn’t?” Nezuko said as she stopped crying. And now it was her turn to be confused.
“No! I- I was just nervous.” Kanao said.
“About what? Talking, too, me?” Nezuko asked, she tilted her head in an adorably confused way that was too much for Kanao’s heart.
“Um, uh it- it was actually about something I wanted to ask you.”
“Oh what was it you wanted to ask?” Nezuko asked (again).
“Will you- ummm, uhhh” Kanao had practiced and mentally preparing herself for 2 weeks, yet she was faltering.
‘Was all that practice really worth it…’ Kanao found herself thinking.
Nezuko let out a giggle, “this reminds me of the first time we met. Don’t worry, take your time.”
“Will y- will you come to the garden with me tonight!?” Kanao finally said.
“Huh?! Oh, sure.” Nezuko said. she wasn't sure what she was expecting but it wasn’t an invitation to the garden. Nezuko was still very happy about it though.
Nezuko was here at the garden now. It was 11:00. Nezuko wasn’t sure why Kanao wanted her here so late, but she was here now. It was hard convincing her parents to let her go but they agreed to in the end. And nezuko really owes Tanjiro bringing her up to the garden so late as well.
Oh no! Nezuko thought. I forgot to ask Kanao were she was going to be!
Nezuko ran through the garden not taking any time to stop and admire the flowers. She ran to the pond and the sight made her catch her breath. Kanao was sitting next to the pond and she looked absolutely gorgeous. The moonlight made her skin have a pearlescent glow and her hair which was down was glittering. The sight made butterflies fly around in her stomach
Nezuko let out a little squeak. It was barely audible but Kanao heard it and turned her head to face Nezuko. Kanao smiled softly and gestured for Nezuko to come join her. So Nezuko did.
“You look gorgeous” Kanao said. Had Nezuko ever mentioned how much she loved Kanao’s voice?
“No, you do!” Neuko said.
Kanao let out a gentle giggle.
“Nezuko, do you want to go on a walk?” Kanao asked
“Ok”
Kanao got up and offered Nezuko her hand, which Nezuko took. After she got up neither of the girls made a move to unlink hands. They were walking by the lilacs when Nezuko started to talk.
“The garden looks so different at night. The moonlight makes everything look softer and glow almost.”
“Yeah it’s beautiful isn’t it?” Kanao said while looking at Nezuko.
Nezuko let out a gentle hum in response. They took a walk all around the garden, and Nezuko wanted to take everything in. How can the same place that I’ve seen a thousand times look different? Nezuko wondered. Before long they came back to the pond.
“So,” Kano started, “I asked you to come here for a reason.”
“Yeah…” Nezuko knew there was a deeper reason, of course it was nice taking a walk in the moonlit garden, but Kanao wouldn’t have asked her to come meet her so late unless she had something important to say.
“I figured it would be easiest to tell you with nobody else here.” Kanao said.
“Mhm” Nezuko replied, she didn’t really know what to say to that.
Nezuko thought Kanao would say something but instead she held out a bouquet. It must’ve been by the pond the entire time. Nezuko hadn’t seen it at all. The bouquet was made of amaryllis, white carnations and Hydrangeas. Nezuko didn’t know too much about floriography but she got what the flowers meant. Kanao opened her mouth to talk, probably to say with her words like she had already said with the bouquet but Nezuko put her hand over it.
“I like you too,” Nezuko said.
Kanao hugged her. She held on tightly hoping this wasn’t a dream.
“Thank you.” She whispered, so quietly that the only reason Nezuko heard it was because she said it right next to her ear.
Nezuko hugged her back, this was the first time they had embraced each other as something more than friends and Nezuko was going to cherish this moment. After a while Nezuko loosened the hug and looked up at Kanao.
“Ka- kanao, I hope I’m not rushing things or pressuring you- last thing I would want i- is to make you uncomfortable-” Nezuko said as she started rambling,“-but, can I kiss you?”
Kanao laughed, not at nezuko, but at herself.
“Nezuko, thank you for asking. I’ve wanted to kiss you for so long, it’s crazy. I wanted to ask but I was too shy, so thanks.”
They stared at each other for a while, since neither of them made a move first.
“Ummmm,” Nezuko said
“Sorry,” Kanao started, she sounded worried,” I’ve never kissed anyone so I’m not sure really- how to, uhhh do this.”
“Mhm,” Nezuko said,”don’t tell anyone I told this, but the only person I’ve ever kissed was this girl from first grade.”
Kanao laughed, “Oh my god, really.”
Nezuko turned red. “Y- yeah it was uh, I swear there was an explanation okay!?”
“Okay, I believe you.” Kanao said she did not pry further though she made a mental note to bring this up later.
“Well, if we’re gonna kiss, we just have to lean in and press our lips against each other right?” Nezuko said, sounding a little unsure.
“Well yeah I don’t see why it has to be anymore complicated than that.” Kanao replied
Nezuko put her hands on Kanao’s shoulders and Kanao put her hands on Nezuko’s waist. The both leaned in. And bumped their noses. They both laughed, it wasn’t too bad for a first attempt right? They both leaned in again, making sure to tilt their heads this time, as they leaned in.
Flowers. That’s how Nezuko would describe it. Kanao always carried the scent wherever she went. It was one of the things Nezuko found cute about Kanao. Kanao’s lips were nice and soft, like flower petals. Nezuko leaned back in, to get the feel of it all once more.
Then Kanao placed a gentle kiss on Nezuko’s forehead and hugged her again. This time, Nezuko would say, they hugged for even longer.
“Nezuko,” Kanao whispered in Nezuko’s ear, “As much I’d like to stay here with you for much, much longer, we have to get going now.”
“I suppose you’re right.” Nezuko said and then let out a little giggle.
Kanao took Nezuko’s hand.
“Shall I walk you home?” Kanao asked.
“That sounds lovely,” Nezuko replied. The butterflies fluttered around in her stomach again, but she had to admit, it wasn’t quite so bad.
