Chapter Text

“Remus, can you show me how to do that again?”

“Pete your tensions too loose it's not gonna sit right”

“Well I can’t even do the stitch! Wormtail won’t have a sweater at all if I can’t even do a stitch!”

“What the fuck is a wormtail?”

Remus smirked up at Regulus, who looked ready to explode. He was sitting next to Lily as per usual and clearly not enjoying the addition of Peter Pettigrew to the fiber arts club.

“Wormtail is Peter's pet rat. He’s knitting him a jumper, obviously”

“Obviously” Regulus scoffed back, turning back to his own project.

“Your tensions gotten better, Reg”

“Yeah, no thanks to you, Lupin”

And so it went.

Remus and Regulus had been friends at school. They had gone to the same college and taken the same A-levels. Regulus was bitter where Remus was sweet. And yet, it was Regulus who cried over romance novels and Remus who described his first kiss as “perfectly adequate”. Plenty of people seemed surprised to find out the two of them were friends, but they wouldn’t have it any other way. Pete had gone to a different college but was lifelong friends with Sirius so he was a frequent visitor at football matches. Regulus hadn’t been thrilled when Remus began dating his older brother, but the two were still thick as thieves, so he got over it fairly quick.

18:00 When is the next club meeting?

18:05 I don’t know, I’m not a member. Ask Lily.

18:05 Reg, you’re definitely a member. And Lily is your friend. Ask her for me?

18:15 ….What do I get?

18:20 Piss off.

18:21 Hmm alright, but have fun figuring out when your little club meets by yourself.

18:30 I’ll make dinner Tuesday night? You can even pick the film. I’ll give up my turn.

18:35 Gnocchi? And for dessert we get the nice vanilla ice cream from Sirius’s work.

18:35 Fine.

18:36 The meeting is on Thursday at five thirty xx

“Remusssssssss”

“Yes Prongs?” Remus looked up from his book to see James Potter standing in front of him, half dressed, carelessly holding a cup of tea that was very close to spilling on the couch.

“How do you like these trousers? Are they too tight? Am I trying too hard?”

“They look great, James. Shows off your arse just enough but doesn’t look like you’re trying too hard.”

“Thank you! Sirius said I just looked like a worse version of him”

He chuckled as James went off to find a shirt. He was going on a date with some girl he fancied. Remus tried to recall her name….Lucy? She was lovely, James said and it had taken him nearly three months to come up with the courage to ask her out. When he finally managed it, he did so only after spilling the entirety of his coffee on her notes and tripping over his own feet after she said yes. He was picking her up at 7 after her society meeting. He was so nervous and hadn't stopped talking about it all week, going on about her hair and calling his mum to ask if he should wear a suit. Sirius had looked ready to murder him the other night when they were eating dinner and promptly declared the living room a “girl free zone”.

Remus’s phone alarm went off and he gathered his things to meet Regulus for fiber arts club (of which he was still, definitely not a member). Club went well. Peter was starting to finish his second swatch and his tension had improved significantly. Regulus had stared daggers at them the whole time but refused to accept any help from Remus, even though he needed it. 7 o’clock rolled around and everyone started gathering up their things when in walked James Potter, tight pants and all.

“James? What’re you doing here?”

“Remus! I’m picking up Lily for our date! I didn’t know you knew each other”

Of course! He’d called her Lily! Remus hadn’t been listening very closely and must have misheard it as Lucy. “Brilliant, have fun mate. Don’t do anything I wouldn’t do” he added with a wink before James and Lily walked off. Remus turned to walk off himself only to be confronted with Regulus Black standing stark still and white as a sheet. “Regulus? Are you okay?” He blinked a few times and then slightly shook his head.

“Yea, absolutely fine. Remus? Who was that?”

“Who, James? He’s Sirius’s best mate. We all live together”

“No, Peter is Sirius’s best mate. James is…”

“Well yeah, Pete will always be his number one but James is like…his soulmate. They met during freshers week. It’s quite creepy how codependent they are honestly”

Regulus didn’t say anything else and so the two of them left to go have dinner at the pub across the street. He did, however, make a mental note to ask Sirius why he had gone two years without mentioning his soulmate best friend to his younger brother.
