Work Text:

BANG! BANG! BANG!

You sit back against the storefront window, waiting for any signs of life - or death - from inside.

Today, you were sent out on a run for some supplies for the prison. You, Glenn, and Maggie are searching for any medical supplies you can find, so you’ve stopped in a local small town not far off the highway. It doesn’t have a lot of stores, but there are a few rows of houses nearby that might have something useful. That’s where Glenn and Maggie are right now, while you check out the small store that’s probably been picked through a bunch of times already.

When no sound comes from within, you yank the front door open and slip inside. You were right: this place has definitely been raided before. The shelves at the front of the store are nearly empty, and a few of the racks have been knocked over.

But you’re on a specific mission, so you make a beeline to the counter and hop over it. In front of you are rows and rows of medications and medical supplies. Some are missing, but definitely not as much as the front, so you get to work searching for the items on the list Hershel gave you.

When your bag is full, you look down at your watch. Five minutes to spare. You sit on the counter and pull out an apple to munch on while you wait.

You glance at your watch again, a small smile on your lips. It’s not a fancy watch by any means - no diamonds or solid gold band or anything - but it means so much to you. It was a gift from Daryl, who found it for you on a run after yours had gone missing.

Found it on a run.

You jump up from the counter when the idea hits you. Scurrying around the room, you start checking all of the remaining shelves and piles of crap laying around. Nothing

Standing back up, that’s when you see it: the perfect gift for Daryl.

Later that day, Daryl rides his motorcycle up to the prison gates. Squinting through, he whistles, and Carl runs forward to let him in. After nodding his thanks, Daryl carefully guides the bike up the path towards the building.

Daryl huffs as he walks inside. He spent the day hunting, but only managed to find a couple of rabbits. It’s better than nothing, but it’ll go quick and then he’ll be back out in the woods hunting again. Frustrated, he climbs the stairs two at a time up to his loft, ready to crash for the night.

But when he gets there, he notices something out of place. On his makeshift table sits a pair of sunglasses, with black frames and lenses so dark, it looks near impossible for any light to shine through. Under them is a note:

Gotta protect those baby blues. Thanks again for the watch. - Y/N

Daryl chuckles, then pops the glasses on before falling onto his bed, a lopsided grin on his lips.
