Summary
“Do not look away, Hermione,” he breathed in her ear. “This is the last human pain you will remember.”
His tail tightened its pressure with a measured twist.
Quick as lightning, two clean cracks echoed in the midst of the churning sea.
White-hot pain detonated through her shins. So painful that Hermione’s scream tore free from her throat. She began to thrash around his hold, claw at his chest, to grip at anything that her hand could reach—his shoulder, his arms—anything—to lessen this pain! It hurts, it hurts, it hurts!
Her mangled legs, what remained of them, twitched uselessly before ceasing their movement entirely, and Tom held her still, almost tenderly, his tail loosening to cradle what it had broken.
“The sea is jealous of your feet,” he whispered lovingly while holding her tightly in his embrace. “But it gives more than it takes.”
Or,
Hermione’s throat burned as the cave filled with saltwater. A siren with a human name offered her a chance for a second life, for a price. On the eve of her seventeenth, the debt comes due.
