Neil knew now that Alexander had not mourned in excess at all. For his sight had been worse still, the lines of the face and body and faded soul inked over with the curse of eternity; a sleep he would never wake from. Laughter that would be forgotten, a beloved dead twice. It reasoned, then, that Alexander had mourned him in such a way that neither the heavens nor the earth or even the river Lethe could ever wash him from memory, that unreliable thing.

Kevin threw open the front door, looking wildly about the darkened hallway. There was nothing there but the faint light thrown out from a faraway exit sign, no movement but that of his own breath. Even seeing the empty hallway, he could not convince himself that there was no presence there but himself.
