The first time Xie Yun meets Zhou Fei, he is trapped between laser tripwires in an air vent above her home, tasked with breaking into the legendary 48 Strongholds to steal a copy of a floorplan from Gantang-gong's office.
"Who the hell are you?" she hisses. "How did you get in here?" She peers behind him, dagger still held at the ready, and clocks the laser tripwires blocking the way behind him. "Oh, my mother's going to kill you."

“Carried from the heavens, decreed by the emperor, in celebration of the wedding of His Highness, the third prince and Southern Blade Zhou Fei, the emperor has bestowed upon the diamond in his hand a single wish to the person who holds the diamond in hand. To qualify for the prize of one wish, the diamond must turn into a ruby at the hands of the one who finds it, and the wish will not be granted until the diamond has been returned to the imperial court.”

Zhou Fei strikes a deal with the Third Prince of the Southern Dynasty: she would marry him in exchange for the best care the Imperial Court could offer for her father's ailing health. However, fate arrives the night before her wedding--the emperor releases a diamond in celebration of their wedding that is to grant the wish of whomever finds the stone and brings it back to the Imperial Court. Zhou Fei realizes that as the diamond flies into the distance for the hunt, a star also falls on the same night. Legends say that a star's heart could grant great power or eternal youth, and Zhou Fei, desperate to get out of her marriage and save her father at the same time, decides to hunt for the diamond to get her wish, and the star for a miracle.

One plays the guqin, fingers lithe and precise, cycling through complex improvisations—and the other plays some sort of flute beneath the veil, shoulders hunched forward to hold it, eyes closed as the music carries both players away. The guqin player strums a new chord, and the flute player opens their eyes, and—
