Summary
It would not do for any of the men of his own ship to see him in such an indecent and vulnerable state, and so he nods stiffly toward the curtain and steps behind the combined concealment of it and the exam table to undress. Then, flushed and furious, he climbs onto the table and—the indignity of it is excruciating; he clenches his teeth so hard he tastes blood—crawls back until he feels the curtain, lifted by Mr. Goodsir, brush against the small of his back. He holds still on his hands and knees, the sluggish and cool air of the ship drawing taut the hairs (he can feel it) along his thighs.
OR: Stanley is due for his annual hysteria treatment and, much to his annoyance, the task has fallen to the no doubt incompetent Goodsir.
