Summary
It is the responsibility of those gifted with powerful abilities to stand over the rest of society, to make sure every citizen knows their place. For Arlo, this is the belief that has been instilled in him since he was young, and one that he has upheld fanatically ever since the disastrous end of his mentor’s alternative system.
So when Wellston's rank one steps outside the hierarchy, concerning herself with trivial matters and in the company of the school’s lowest ranker, Arlo schemes to drag both into their rightful roles. His plan? To isolate the weakest link, the false cripple, and squeeze him out like a lemon.
But just before Arlo’s plot can reach its climax, an unforeseen party steals away his means of attack, throwing his plan into ruins and leaving him at the mercy of the two students he’s despised most. Now forced to feign strength to hide weakness, and to keep playing friendly with John, Arlo must navigate a Wellston that’s far more dangerous to him than before, all the while confronting ugly truths about the hierarchy he’s venerated his entire life.
