Summary
The Exalted and the Commander are similar in some respects. They shared a purpose in protecting Aurene; they were present when she hatched into the world, and they knew the day would come when she would eventually spread her wings and leave.
Of the Exalted, however, Bastion Wekesa was the only one present on the day the Commander returned to the Inner Chamber to stare at an empty pedestal.
“Are you the one they refer to as Commander?”
She existed under a title. The name of her birth had been cast aside for a greater duty. I felt she was like us in that way, but how willingly she had forsaken her past to lead the world into the future, I did not know.
