Summary
“ …You know- I abandoned that useless brute for a reason. He did nothing to help and just talked, talked, and talked. I expected you- me- to be a bit more… quick to help?” The remark was followed by a nudge from the shoe of the man’s doppel. A nearly identical image of himself, save for a few unsavory details that he promptly adjusted to try and look a little less- how to put it nicely… untidy? Unkempt?
“Wait- What even happened?” He finally stammered out a question, nervously letting out a forced laugh as he tried to get himself to stand up, leaning onto the wall for support.
“What do you think happened?” The mirror replied, “They’re so easy to trick, I just did what I do best. Worked a little magic and now we have the only two productive people in this entire building right here.”

Or: Protag and Antag only have eachother. Protag still doesn't know how to react seeing his mirror image.

Summary
One step.
Two steps.
Three steps.
Then [PROTAG] is back in the elevator, standing by some gray-scale entity who's name he doesn't even know. He wasn't expecting to be helped out, but he was. Apparently things work in his favor, or maybe against him.
All he knows is that his doppelgänger is getting out of the elevator.

"And in every narrative there are gaps: places where, although things happened and the characters spoke and acted and lived their lives, the story says nothing about them. It was fun to visit a few of these gaps and speculate a little on what I might see there."

Ch1
It's worse than before. They'd been... less unbalanced, the first time- and it feels like shit that there's a first time, that it wasn't the last- but now? Now, after everything's changed once, twice, a third time? His coworker won't even look at him.
-
He exhales; not without fear, like he had before, but silently. The way he knows best- if no-one notices you, it'll be better. Then they won't look at you like that. Then they won't realize you've done anything wrong. How is it that, of all places, this hallway had been the one place he'd felt safe enough to breathe without fear? Now it's not even that. A cold comfort, ripped away. His back and his cheek sting with bruises, the same way his coworker's neck is bleeding and scratched and there's an angry red mark under his eye. He wishes he'd made that man bleed more. If it was just him and a corpse in here, maybe it'd be less... everything. Maybe instead of this uncertainty and rage and regret it'd only be grief that he'd have to deal with. His hands itch for his scissors.
-
You're the worthless one here, he hears, a phrase in two voices. His coworker's, right after the doors had closed, angry and frustrated and cold and pained. His own, snapped out so loudly the thought still scares him. It's the knife to the chest he's been begging for. "Oh, you're right. Maybe I should try it this time? I'm sure, since I'm so scrawny and little-" (Does he think I don't hear him when he complains about me? he'd thought so long ago, when his coworker was still bright and thoughtless and loud) "- I'll be able to do a hundred times better than you. In fact, maybe if we both try-"
-
His coworker falters. He smiles, half-aware of how he must look. Sickening. Sick. "What, are you going to fight me again? Are you going to break my skull on these walls? Go ahead. Do it. Don't make me wait. We've both been waiting for far too long." ... There's no answer. He freezes as the silence settles back in, as his coworker stills and his expression clouds over with... something. Guilt? Fear? Realization? No. No, keep talking. Keep fighting me. Please, it's something, anything, I need to hear you, come back and hate me- The other man doesn't say a word.
-
His companion turns a little further away. He's... He's ignoring me. No. No, he can't- it's so bad already, to do all this alone, to lose one more thing, to lose so much- He's left frozen as the silence continues. Maybe- maybe after a minute there will be something. An hour. A day. Don't. Don't leave me here alone. Don't leave me. Hate me, be afraid of me, I don't care, please- I can't lose you, look at me! It is only a few minutes. But they feel like forever. As his companion refuses to even look at him, stewing too long in his thoughts, the world seems to fade.
-
Wh- What are you doing with that thing?!" His companion's eyes widen, and he grabs for the shard. Not fast enough- he grabs the other man's hair, tugging until his chin is tilted up and laying the shard against his throat. "Are you-?!" The fear in his eyes... The faint image of it in the dark is familiar. It's the same look in his eyes from the first time they'd tried shaving him with the scissors, a thousand times brighter. It makes something painful wail in his chest, but even that warps into something welcome against the threat of nothingness. He doesn't answer, holding his companion's head in place in place with his free hand and shifting until he's comfortable. "Shh. Don't move. We've done this before. I'm making do." "We've done this before?!" His companion struggles, and the movement shifts the shard enough that it slices into the man's neck, barely a centimetre into his Adam's apple. He yanks it back before it can do permanent harm, frowning and rubbing the blood off the long cut with his thumb. "When on earth would-" He smiles, knowing it's just barely visible this close. "I said, don't move." The other man stills as the shard falls cold against his cheek. It must be familiar. He likes to start here, dragging a scissor blade down and cupping his companion's face in his free hand. Unbidden, the man brushes fingers against his own, eyes widening. "You..." Just like that. Stay with me. I'm not doing this without you. He begins. The shard is uneven, slicing a little wound down his companion's pallid skin, but the other man doesn't even flinch, staring at him with wide eyes. His stubble has been growing, patchy and uneven as their shaving usually is, and a shiver runs down the man's spine as the ceramic continues. Their fingers are still just barely brushing each other, the faint pressure like fireworks in his mind. Despite his best attempts, this will be bloody. But he's too shot through with satisfaction to care. And it looks like his companion is the same. -

Summary
He feels so alive, he feels reborn. As the elevator moves, he leans against the wall and laughs, starting off quietly before breaking out into near hysterics, using one of his hands to push back the hair that falls in front of his face. He’s won. Finally, finally, he’s out of that awful place, after who knows how much time has passed. He’s so glad that who he was before all this is so naive despite all of the dying, of all the tricks and the traps and the dangers here. The sheer sensation of something new, of movement beneath his feet, things on the wall to run his hand over, there’s so much for him to take in right now. His other hand opens and closes the scissors a little faster than usual.
- - -
The doppelgängers successfully trick their apparent originals, and so they continue to go through all of the floors in an attempt to finally free themselves. Naturally, this means they have to make a stop on Floor 4, and the doppelgänger of the protagonist is equally as unhappy as this as his original would be.
