Cassim had never forgotten how his wife had looked, curled up tightly on the makeshift bed they had made up in the half-open, dilapidated remains of a building’s upper levels.
(He couldn’t forget the fight he had had with her either. The raised voices, screamed accusations, and sobbing toddler. Cassim had told her that he had something greater than the dismal alleys of the city to explore, and she had yelled at him for a full hour before crumpling and asking if their family wasn’t enough. If it wasn’t already something better.
The argument had stopped there, and in the night, Cassim had carefully detached himself from his slumbering son, hot like a furnace against his side, and stepped away into his new life, leaving nothing behind but his spare coins, a knife, and his family.)
