A single beam of moonlight streamed in through their curtains, straight onto the bed, painting CJ’s relaxed face with shimmering silver, and Donna had to stop in the doorframe to just look at her. The moonlight cast soft shadows across her face, illuminated her cheekbones and the gentle curve of her nose, and Donna couldn’t stop the smile that spread across her face. God, she was so beautiful, a goddess curled up under their covers, and Donna wondered not for the first time what she’d done to deserve her.
CJ shifted, hand coming up to press against her face, fingers clumsily touching her temple as her eyes blinked open. “D’nna? You home?”
“Yeah, honey, it’s me.”
“Come to bed.” CJ reached for her across the bed, fingers grabbing at air, and Donna felt her smile grow as she stepped further into the room. “You were gone too long.”

Sam exhaled, long and as slow as he physically could, before turning to face Josh again. He stood just a few feet into their room, curls lit softly by the lamp between their beds, confusion visible on his face as he stared at him, eyes gentle but questioning, patient in a way he so rarely was with anyone. Normally on nights like this, they went with CJ and Toby to a bar around the corner and played pool for a few hours, drinking just enough to feel it then but not the next morning. This wasn’t something they’d ever done, and Sam– Sam could feel anxiety clawing at his throat, because what if this was the wrong move? The wrong decision? What if Josh didn't feel the same and he ruined everything they'd built, everything that had grown between them again in the last few months?

“You always stay in this hotel, in this room, when you’re here, if it’s free. Which it usually is.” Josh glanced down at his shoes, ears flushed a dull pink, and Sam’s heart stuttered in his chest like he was some high schooler with a crush. Oh. God, maybe he really had been an idiot. 23 years of knowing Josh, of not understanding why exactly he would drop anything for Josh, why he would do anything he asked, why Josh was the only person he really understood completely, really trusted, even when he was being a little bit of an idiot. 23 years it had stared him right in the face and somehow, he’d just never really realized. Or maybe he had and just didn’t want to think about it. The realization should have sent him hurtling into a panic, perhaps, spiraling into oblivion, but instead, it just made everything click, slot into place. Because of course, he loved Josh.
“What were you going to do if it wasn’t me?”
“Probably just… run away. I don’t know, I didn’t really think that far ahead.”
