Summary

Summary
Paul feels rather guilty about this, actually. His plans were to originally dine with Duncan in the garden, under the stars and far away from the soldiers standing guard in every corner of the house. They’d talk and flirt and then make their way to a specially prepared bedroom with candles and silky sheets. Afterwards, they could bathe each other, wash off the sweat and replace it with the sweet smell of rose petals. It’s rather romantic, he knows, but it would be his first time and Duncan hadn’t courted anyone in years, so he wanted it to be different than just a romp in bed. Paul had gone through all of it with a fine tooth comb, meticulously overseen each part of the night. His mother had been proud of him, of his dedication and care.
He doubts he brings much pride like this, dragging the infamous Swordmaster Duncan Idaho through his ancestral home, fingers hooked like claws in the man’s flight suit and lips ravaging a panting mouth like a wild beast.

“Paul.” It’s a warning and he should heed it; they should take things slowly just like they have been this past month. They should be calm and not rush, not the day before they must say goodbye. Thing is, Paul’s not good with patience. Not with this, not when it has to do with Duncan. Not when he has been patient already, his love forced to linger in the shadows for years. How could he be patient, when this man could leave him and come back as ash? Or worse, as nothing more than a painful, beautiful memory?
“I’ll miss that. You saying my name. Sometimes, I lie awake in my bed and pretend you’re next to me, whispering my name over and over. I pretend there’s nothing in this universe strong enough to steal you from me and I pretend I can kiss you under the stars.” Duncan’s facade is cracking, splintering like a broken bone, and he wants. Paul wants to protect him, shield him from his own honor, his sense of duty, his need to prove what Paul already knows, has known since the moment their eyes met. Paul wants to kiss this man and steal the very air from his lungs, give it back with teeth and tongue, turn it into a gift meant to be exchanged only by them.
