Summary
Two Iterators are built in space for a specific purpose. Not to get a solution to the Great Problem, it's actually quite the opposite.
It's to keep their creators alive forever while the world below shrivels and dies.
Their creators keep themselves alive forever by transitioning their souls into various mechanical bodies.
There was also another group that would cryogenically freeze themselves in specialized pods.
The Iterator structure is based on The World Tree from Xenoblade 2
