When dinosaurs ruled the earth, I was in school and there was no such thing as fanfic. Well, there was, but they were privately printed fanzines. Like the speak easies of the 1920's you had to know someone to get a copy. I didn't know anyone. Star Trek did publish a paperback of fan created stories. I thought I had died and gone to heaven.
Fast forward way too many years. The internet happens, and allows the creation of communities of interest not limited by proximity, ie. fandoms. Fanfic has found it's niche, and so did I.
