After many years of reading fanfic, I decided to try it myself. So far, it has gone surprisingly well!
I got this account as a backup in case Ficwad dies, and I think of the Ficwad copy as "primary", but that doesn't mean I'm not grateful for the existence of AO3. It has a broad view of artistic freedom and is stable enough that it will be there even if Ficwad dies. There are no good alternatives.
The bit about artistic freedom matters a lot to me -- there is some content in my story that would get me kicked off of every other big site but Ficwad. Fiction doesn't naturally obey the rules of censors -- sometimes the plot and the characters do what they do even when it's not particularly convenient. There's something in my story for just about everyone to object to, and maybe I kind of angled to have it that way as a bit of a writing exercise at times, but mostly, the story was the thing, and I could never have written it with somebody else's content guidelines breathing down my neck.
So, thank you, Archive of Our Own, for existing and letting me post my stuff, safely pseudonymously, for free, and regardless of what horrible liberties I take with the Harry Potter universe. I know there has been some controversy about the site redesign, which is guess is the nature of humans to complain about. Still, I'm extremely grateful that AO3 exists in the first place. Story status: Feb 2015 -- thousands of unposted words. I haven't counted recently. I'm not dead, and neither is the story. :P

"Circaea" is the genus name of a plant used by Circe to turn Ulysses' men into pigs. I could say it has something to do with her being on the chocolate frog cards, but actually the plant produces burs and I've spent a lot of time pulling them out of my socks over the years. I guess it's sort of botanical Stockholm syndrome.
