A long time ago when I was applying to universities, the admission forms give applicants an opportunity to self identify if they fall within categories for special consideration. The four major categories are: gender, race, disability and First Nations status. Technically, I qualify under 3 of the 4 to be listed as a minority. The funny thing, though, is that I am blessed enough to live a society where I've never regarded any of these "conditions" a hindrance to anything I choose to do. Even when I was making beneath poverty line income, I have always felt rich. Even when I went through major depression after a health issue, and when my family's health was in serious jeopardy, I had known with a firm conviction that "it is well, it is well, with my soul".
(It helps massively that I live in a nation where health crises do not overlap with financial crises. Thank you, Canada)
