As the ice burns his tears and blurs his vision, there is a sudden warmth. He sees the outline of a face, and amber, and dark hair. And they’re floating above the lake, and Ajax realizes, just before he drifts off, that an archon - from tales of old - has saved him.
Or, Zhongli saves Childe from drowning when he's a kid and Childe decides that when he grows up he wants to become an archon, find, and marry his savior.
