He's lying on his back, staring up at the ceiling, limbs too exhausted to move and the scent of blood in the air- but all he can think about is the horrifyingly realistic and completely nonsensical dream he just experienced.

Lu Yao complains and gasps and whines, but eventually settles into letting Qiao Chusheng clean the wound. It doesn’t take that long, but something about the process- about the slow, meditative pass of the cloth, the warmth of the water, the clean smell of fresh blood- is familiar; soothing to Qiao Chusheng. He’s done this many times before: for himself, for others. He likes doing it for Lu Yao better, though. Would have preferred if he weren’t injured at all- but he likes being here, kneeling between his legs and taking care of him. Is glad that he’s the one to do it.

Li Lun is gone for months. Zhuo Yichen doesn’t see any sign of him in the bureau; no one else does either. Pei Sijing seems pleased that he’s left; Ying Lei worried. Zhao Yuanzhou won’t say anything at all, except that he can’t tell where he’s gone. It could be a lie; Zhuo Yichen doesn’t know how to tell.
When Li Lun returns it’s in a swirl of black robes and a smell of blood. He pushes open the doors to the bureau- sparking Zhuo Yichen’s memory of his first meeting with Zhao Yuanzhou- and strides inside, red dripping from his fingers. He comes to a stop in front of where Zhuo Yichen stands with Pei Sijing, humorless smile pulling at his lips. Wen Xiao isn’t in the bureau- she and Zhao Yuanzhou have gone to the wilderness. Li Lun smiles like he knows it.

“There you are!” Wen Xiao says, setting aside her brush and paper. She’s dressed down; one less layer than Zhuo Yichen is used to seeing. He feels the immediate need to avert his eyes, despite knowing that he’s here to partake in a greater intimacy than seeing underclothes. “Come, the tea will get cold.”
Zhao Yuanzhou drifts to Wen Xiao, eyes wide in that fake intimidated way that he loves to play at. Zhuo Yichen’s heart stutters. “Xiao Zhuo daren is looking nervous,” he stage whispers.
“Of course he’s nervous,” Wen Xiao says briskly, “he’s never done it before.” Zhuo Yichen feels Zhao Yuanzhou’s eyes drilling into the side of his head; he stares desperately at the wall. “Don’t worry, xiao Zhuo,” she says, coming over and taking his arm. “It will be easy, we’ll show you what to do.”

Zhao Yuanzhou is dead. Very good; one less evil in this world. Pei Sijing can admit, now that he’s gone, that ‘evil’ is perhaps a simplification of his motivations; but certainly one less danger. One less willing killer.
Zhao Yuanzhou was everything that she mistrusts in yao. No matter his facade of ease, his restraint, his manners- she could see that almost fanatic desperation in him. Just like Ran Yi, just like Cheng Huang, just like Long Yu- he developed an unwavering obsession so quickly. One that he would easily kill for; one he would easily die for. Watching Wen Xiao accept that obsession, play along with his interest- it scared her. Yao can’t be trusted to stay within the bounds of safe behavior.
