Work Text:
“So, how’s the flow going with your love life?” you asked Jungkook, trying to sound nonchalant as if it’s just a normal question that came out of your mouth, when it’s not. For you, at least. You were dying to know what exactly is happening with his life, especially when it comes to who he’s going out with at the moment
“What are you talking about? I don’t have any.” he said with a glowing grin that showed all of his front teeth, including the mandibular ones. You looked up at him for a second, your face feeling a little hot at seeing his smile. This smile is his real, genuine smile, you thought.
You scoffed and rolled your eyes. “Yeah, right. I almost forgot. You’re actually still head-over-heels for some girl who doesn’t like you back.” you mumbled in a mocking tone
“Yep. It’s still the same old issue. I don’t think there’s anything new.” he shrugged.
“Come on, still, tell me everything about it. I know this drama’s just repeating over and over again, but I still want to hear it.” you insist as you make eye contact with him, finally putting your phone down.
“Are you sure you want to know everything, though?” he asked as he lifted a brow up. “Even the names? Is it okay for you to hear the names?” he said, emphasizing the word “names” as much as he can.
You shook your head quickly. You definitely did not want to know who is or more likely, are as he emphasized the word names, with ‘s’ meaning plural, causing Jungkook such romantic distress.
Every time he asks you on why you don’t want to know, you simply answer with the same words as if on you’ve memorized it, “Because, Jungkook, once I found out who’s hurting you, I might lose my mind and I might just go over that girl and pull every strand of her hair out of its roots.” And every time you say that, he just laughs it off like crazy because he knows that you really will do that once you find out whoever’s making him feel upset.
“But still, tell me about it!” you insisted, settling your elbows on the table to get a closer view of him.
“Why are you so persistent to know about it, though? When you don’t even want to know the names.” he said with a teasing grin. He’s just playing with you, he’s going to tell you about it anyway, he’s just stalling to annoy you.
“Then just don’t!” you said a little too loudly, but not enough to catch the attention of the others inside the café.
You picked up your phone on the table with a scowl, muttering a “fucking ass” lowly, instead of just making it stay inside your head, for Jungkook to hear, you let it out with your mouth, while typing your pass code.
“Okay, okay! I’ll tell you,” he said, putting his hands up in the air. “I just thought that you might get tired of this drama of mine since you keep on hearing it from me every time I’m distressed about it.” he averted his gaze from you, feeling shy.
You looked up at him, your eyes softening at his words. True, he’s been like this for a year now. Just telling you the same old story, but you never really got tired of it.
You wanted to sass at him for still stalling when he’s going to tell you about it anyway, but you can’t. He’s already upset and you don’t want to add to it anymore.
“You better prepare. You’re gonna hear the same story again,” he said with a sigh as he starts telling you the story you know all too well without looking at you in the eyes. “You know this girl I like, right? And that no matter how much I try and just date other girls, I still can't forget about her?” you roll your eyes but nod in agreement. You don’t really know who exactly this girl is. You just know that she’s the girl that’s been causing Jungkook the endless romantic misery.
“Well, technically you don’t know who exactly since you don’t want me to tell. But she’s the girl that I’m really close to—my best friend,” he said, not noticing the slight change in your expression.
And I thought I was your best friend, you said inside your thoughts
You felt a pang in your chest when the words ‘my best friend’ came out of his mouth. You two have known each other for 6 years now, and have been very close ever since. It’s like the two of you were made for each other. Well, at least, that’s what you thought. It seems that Jungkook didn’t think the same thing.
When the two of you were asked on who was your best friend, his answer would be you and your answer would be him. But gladly, it stopped about a year ago, and it was because of him. He was the one to stop first then you just followed.
Gladly because as much as you wanted Jungkook as your best friend, you didn’t want the two of you to remain as just that. You wanted more. You liked Jungkook. You never really liked the label, it was just that if being his best friend would be the best idea to remain close to him, you’d take it.
However, it seems that he doesn’t even consider you as his best friend. Apparently, to him, you’re just a mere close friend that he could confide on.
“She’s just too oblivious. I’ve tried giving hints to her, but no use. I've tried lots of things, seriously. How could I move on when she keeps on texting me?” he said with a complaining tone
You winced, “And you keep replying.” you said with a judgemental tone.
“Yes,” he sighs. “I also see her a lot. We talk a lot. I confide in her a lot. We hang out a lot. We go to parties together, take care of each other’s drunken selves. We do almost everything together.” he said continuously, only taking short inhales when he’s losing his breath.
You just let him talk while you stare at him, making it seem like you’re listening when you’re not. Sure, you were looking at him but your mind flew elsewhere when he started saying the things you two do together. It almost feels like that it’s you he was talking about. But then, you remember that he doesn’t like you in that way, so you immediately snap out of your fantasy. You wanted to assume, but you just can’t think of any reason for Jungkook to grow such feelings for you when he made it very clear that he would never like someone like you.
Jungkook has said something to you before, three sentences that have always remained in the back of your mind. The words that he exactly said one year ago that you still remember up to now. The sentences that broke your heart and reminded you of your place in Jungkook’s life. The three sentences that told you what line you can’t cross and what place you can’t reach. He has said this to you before: “You really are the friend type of person, Y/N. That’s what I think, though. I’m sure there are other men that could see you differently, that’s just my opinion. ”
And yes, he went out with a little number of girls before he fell for this said best friend of him. As far as you know, the only girl that he’s fallen for so hard is this girl. That, this girl, as you like to call her. Jungkook’s always been kind of indifferent to the girls that he dated, which makes you think that he’s actually only going out with them just to experience different kinds of stuff. You also thought that this girl is just one of his few experiments but you were wrong. Very wrong. He started telling you about her two years ago. Then it deepened a year ago, and then some time he just started calling her as his best friend to be able to describe her more to you as time passed, dropping your label with him just like that.
“I don’t think you should pursue this girl. Let’s be real here. She’s a pain in the ass. You’ve given her too much hints. You’re kind of too obvious already,” you whispered too quietly. “You should just let her go.”
The words left your mouth without your consent, leaving a subtle shocked expression on your face. You definitely didn’t want to meddle with Jungkook’s romantic issues. You’ve always just gave him nonsense advices. This is the first time you actually told him to do something.
“I know. Don’t say that, Y/N. It’s not like I didn’t try doing that.”
“A-ah. Yeah. What the fuck was I saying?” you mumble, still startled at your previous words. “Well… maybe it’s because you need to do something. Like, umm.. confess, maybe?” you said with a shrug, your eyes a little too wide for your liking while looking at him.
“Yeah? You think I should do that?” he said with a bright smile, the smile that never failed to make your heart skip a goddamn beat.
Your eyes returned back to normal, softening at his calming, bright smile. But it didn’t change the fact that your mind is in frenzy right now. You can’t control anything that’s coming out of your mouth anymore. Words that you don’t want to say just continue to flow out. “Yup. Do it.” you said, giving him a beaming smile.
You’ve finally lost your mind. You’re a selfish person, you know that. That’s why you never helped him or told him to actually do something about it when he’s in trouble with the girl he likes/dating. But at the same time, you also didn’t make him do something that would put his relationships in worse condition. You just didn’t want to help, is all.
Before he could respond that he can’t do it for now, you cut him off by saying, “Oh no. Actually, on second thought, don’t. Not yet, at least.” you said, you wanted to know more about it before making him do things you’ll only regret.
“Why?”
“Tell me more about it. Tell me about the hints. I need to know what kind of hints you were giving to her. If you’ve given a lot, then why does she still not know about it? Your hints are probably crap,” you said with a smile, feeling dejectedly happy. He smiled at you too, feeling a little better now that you’re talking and joking around. “I’ll give you love advice, okay?” you said as you tap on his hand.
Dejectedly happy because you’re glad that you’re actually helping Jungkook out, but at the same time dejected because of the same reason: you’re helping Jungkook out to get a girl that’s not you.
Jungkook felt a deep stabbing sensation in his chest, feeling disappointed that you’re willing to help him get a girl, even with the knowledge that you’re not the girl.
“Seriously? Love advice? From you? No way. Not anymore. Your love advices never worked, Y/N. Your relationships always failed.” he said, his previous sentence meant as a joke, though it’s true.
He was right, though. Your previous relationships with other men have always failed. No matter how caring, gentle, or even handsome the man you’re dating is, your ending with them is all the same: a messy breakup with the reason being you. Actually, you weren’t the reason. Jungkook is the reason. You’re so hung up on him that you can’t go out or grow feelings for anyone.
You scoffed. “Please, at least I know how to date. I’m a love expert, Jungkook.”
He agreed with that, though. He knows you knew how to date, he knows you knew how to be sweet with someone you like, he knows you knew if a guy is swooning for you, he knows you knew how to read other people. But why can’t you do that when it comes to him? Why can’t you see through his real feelings?
He chuckled. “Let’s not talk about the hints, Y/N. It’s just making me feel worse to tell the hints again and see her, my best friend,” he said quietly, but emphasized the best friend part discreetly. “Not realize it again.” Jungkook said, eyeing you carefully if you registered what he said and got the idea
He’s not even surprised anymore when you responded.
“Yeah?” you said with nonchalan and droopy eyes, but then widened a little because you’re serious now, and you’re gonna proclaim some things in an unobtrusive manner. “And I thought I was your best friend.” you mumbled a little too bitterly.
He sighed heavily. You really are oblivious. He finally gave in and decided to tell you some of the hints he has given, hoping that you would realize it this way.
“Alright, dumbass. God, you’re so dumb.” he couldn’t help but say insulting words at you with a groan for still not realizing after the words you just said. You scoffed at him in return, still waiting for him to tell you his story with that girl. “She’s very dumb,” he said while staring at you cautiously, hoping again that it triggered you to actually realize it when he just blatantly gave a clue when he said that you were dumb just now.
But nope, you’re still staring at him intently, listening to every word. You still don’t get it.
“Man, you know what? I have to admit she could beat me in some things but if ever love was a game, she’ll certainly lose. I mean seriously. She doesn’t get any–”
“I see now. I’m gonna teach you what to do. Listen carefully, okay?” you cut him off, not willing to hear any more about this girl.
“No way, Y/N. I don’t need your help. If it’s about love, you’re a loser, so no.” he said with a smile, hoping to look nonchalant because deep inside he’s alert again if you’re about to register the hint that he said just now.
“I just gave a clue again, actually. And again, I don’t think any of this talking would work. She treats me and proclaims me as her best fri–“ he said but you cut him off again.
“Shut up and listen, Jungkook. No wonder you’re best-friendzoned. It’s because I’ve never given you a clear advice about this girl, and you don’t listen properly. But now, I’m going to. So, listen carefully.”
“Yeah? Would it work, though?” he said with a blend of sarcasm
“I said, just shut up and listen. I don’t know if it’ll work, but I hope it would.” you said with a fake grin. “Just make a goddamn move. According to your stories, you’ve never really made an actual move. Yes, you did give her clues, but did you say or do anything that actually tells her directly about what you feel for her? No. You didn’t. Because you’re a dumbass,” you paused for a while to breathe, still staring at him sincerely.
“You just said the girl is damned dumb and oblivious, right? Then that’s the answer for you, Jungkook. The answer to your problems. She’s stupid and unaware. You need to tell her directly, Jungkook. Make her feel like it too, because she’ll never know unless you do so.” you said nonchalantly. Then you received a notification to your phone, you shifted your attention to it. It’s just some stupid game reminding you that your pet is hungry, but you used the opportunity to pretend that someone texted you.
You could see Jungkook smile widely, but it disappeared as quickly as it appeared.
“But what if the girl doesn’t feel the same? Really, she might just think of me as her best friend.”
“Oh.” you simply said, putting your phone back down and feeling a little bit too happy about the possibility that that girl might not like Jungkook back. “That’s the worst case scenario. If she rejects you then just forget about her. Let her go. But when she accepts your confession, that’s good. Be happy, okay? Don’t contact me anymore.” you smiled bitterly
You made two decisions earlier. When you decided that you’ll help Jungkook get that girl, you also decided that you’ll end things with him when he gets her. You can’t handle the way things would be at that moment. Seeing him deeply and seriously in love with someone else, while he confides to you about her just pains you so much, so you decided to cut everything with him.
“I can’t believe you’re actually saying rational stuff about relationships right now, Y/N. Also, why wouldn’t you want me to contact you, silly?” he said as he hit your hand playfully
“Because, referring to what you said to me back then about this girl, she’s an insecure and jealous bitch, right?” you said. You could remember him saying something that whenever that girl is in a relationship, she would complain to him about the girls her boyfriend hung out with.
“Yeah? You’re a jealous bitch too, you know that? I could remember you complaining to me, back then. Also, I never said anything about her being a bitch. But yup, she’s kind of a bitch.”
There it is again, that feeling that you might actually be the girl he’s referring to. But you brushed it off.
“I am, too. I admit that. But this isn’t about me, Jungkook. It’s about her,” you said, and Jungkook laughed hysterically so you stared at him weirdly. “She’ll probably try to kill me with you being this close to me.” you reasoned out, even though your true purpose is to distance yourself from him in order to forget about him. This is the first time you’ve ever seen Jungkook be head-over-heels and dead serious over a girl. You never cared about the girls Jungkook went out with or slept with in the past because he didn’t seem that serious. So now, if things go Jungkook’s way, you knew that if you stayed close to him while he’s in love with that girl, you’ll probably die. Jealousy being the cause of your death.
“Alright, then. So this’ll be our last conversation as friends then?” Jungkook joked around, but you actually got hurt at what he said, though not too obvious for him to notice. You thought he didn’t care about cutting ties with you. When you didn’t respond, he continued talking. “What’s the best way to confess?” he asked you.
“U-uh.. If I were the one to confess, I prefer saying it through a phone call.” you said as you looked at him with wide, hurt and angry eyes.
You don’t know why but you feel disappointed about the fact that Jungkook’s following your plan all too well.
“Why?”
“I don’t know. Um, maybe because if someone I like confessed to me through a phone call, I’ll probably lose my mind and he won’t even know if I’m already rolling over the floor. So I think I’d do something that I’d like someone else to do to me.”
He laughed crazily, then turned serious again, “Yeah? What about the best day to confess and start going out?”
“What do you mean?”
“Give me a date. Like, September 1.” he said, straightening his back. Jungkook could feel courage surging through his veins now. At this point, he doesn’t feel that discouraged anymore now that he received tips from the exact person he likes.
“Oh. 14? I think.” you shrugged.
“Be sure about it.” he whined, pinching your fingers lightly.
“14. I’m sure of it. It sounds romantic. Like, when someone asks me when did me and my boyfriend started dating? I’d like to answer, something like 14th of a certain month.”
He broke out in fits of laughter again, then asked, “What date is it today, anyway?”
“January 14.”
“I see. Okay. Bye now, Y/N. I’m gonna confess to the girl.” he said, then pressed his lips together as he stood up, making his way out of the café.
He just left you there.
What an asshole, you thought.
You don’t even feel the tiniest bit of sadness right now. You just want to stand up and make a beeline to Jungkook, and beat him up.
Feeling too weak in the knees because of the different emotions that you experienced in the past hour to even chase after Jungkook, you just decided to text your other close friend, Taehyung.
Typing out something in between the words dumbass and asshole, you notice someone staring at you from the glass window of the café.
It’s Jungkook.
You immediately frowned at him and raised your hand a little for him to see, and made your middle finger stand up while the rest bow down as you mouthed a “fuck you” directed to him.
He just chuckled. Then you see him insert his hand in his hoodie pocket, taking out his phone.
You could swear your eyes looked like it would pop out of its sockets when you see Jungkook start dialling a number on his phone. You then realized he’s going to confess now, with you witnessing the moment.
You forced yourself to look away from him, directing your attention back to your phone, finishing what you were going to send to Taehyung.
When you hit send, you slammed the device down the table, still not looking at the man staring at you at the other side of the window.
Your phone started vibrating, signalling that someone’s calling you. You didn’t expect Taehyung to reply that fast, and even call you, at that.
When you picked up your phone, you saw Jungkook’s name with his annoying little face as the contact picture, eliciting a groan from you. You slid the green button to the right, answering his call.
You looked at him, then rolled your eyes when he smiled a genuine smile at you.
“What do you want, asshole?” you said, annoyance obvious at your tone
When he didn’t respond, you just stared at him. Then he winked at you.
You were about to say a “fuck you” to him for the second time, but when it all dawned upon you, you just gasped and fell silent with your mouth a little open. It hit you hard, especially on the face. You look very dumbfounded right now, beads of sweat starting to form on your neck and hair line.
“Finally get it now? You dumbass. Who’s dumber now?” he said with a smug smirk
“I-I’m–” you said, your face very pale but he cut you off.
“I love you, Y/N.” he said with a flirty wink and blew a kiss your way.
You felt like your heart just dropped to your gut.
You don’t know what to say. But heck, since he’s confessing to you now, why not just go and confess your feelings, too? There’s no point rejecting him when all that your heart screamed was Jeon Jungkook. And even if it’s all just a prank, you could just simply kick him in the balls and say that everything you’ve said and done up until now’s just all a joke. So with a pounding heart you replied:
“I love you too, Jeon Jungkook.” you said with a smile, all too sincere.
His eyes widened and he can’t help but ramble the words, really and oh my god.
“But I believe you’re dumber. I’ve liked you ever since I’ve known you, how could you not notice that?” you said, wanting to push him in the chest.
He chuckled, then said, “Alright. I won’t argue with that anymore.” he said, walking closer to the window. “I admit defeat to you. For this, only.”
“Also, I can’t believe you called me a loser earlier! So those insults before were all for me?” you said, your voice lively and relieved with everything that’s happening right now
“Yeah, I guess they’re all for me now, though.” he said, putting his free hand up to his chest. “So, can you stop being my best friend now? I’d really love to call you my girlfriend, instead.” he said, trying to suppress the big bunny smile threatening to form on his lips.
